YALC, the UK’s first Young Adult Literature Convention will return to the London Film and Comic Con this year with leading Young Adult authors including US YA superstar Cassandra Clare set to take part in this year’s programme. YALC first took place in July 2014, launched by Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2013-2015 Malorie Blackman as one of her major Laureate initiatives. The event was the first large-scale public literature convention dedicated entirely to teen and Young Adult books ever to be hosted in the UK, and saw thousands of young people attending a weekend of events celebrating reading, featuring 50 Young Adult authors.

As part of her laureateship, Blackman was keen to highlight the wealth of authors writing for teenagers and young people, an area currently enjoying a boom in popularity: sales of YA books increased by 25% in 2014 in the UK (Nielsen BookScan).

Following the huge success of this first event, which was described as ‘a hit’ by The Telegraph and ‘a +1 for publishing’ by FutureBook, reading charity Booktrust are continuing the event in 2015, as a key legacy for Malorie Blackman’s laureateship.

Blackman, who will end her tenure as Waterstones Children’s Laureate in June, said:

“I am so delighted that YALC is back for a second year. Last year’s inaugural event, as part of London Film and Comic Con, had something for every story lover, and this year’s YALC promises to be bigger, bolder and even better than before.”

Claire Shanahan, Head of Arts at Booktrust, said:

“To all the doubters who say that young people don’t read: you obviously haven’t been to YALC. That hot and crazy weekend last July proved that books sit alongside film, TV, music, even the latest internet phenomenon, in their affections. We’re delighted to be working with Showmasters to build a legacy for Malorie’s laureateship, and to be adding YALC to our portfolio of offerings for young people alongside our online teen book club, and the new BBC Young Writers Award with Booktrust.”

YALC 2015 will take place in a dedicated Book Zone at the London Film and Comic Con, which this year runs from Friday 17- Sunday 19 July at Olympia, London.

A host of top YA authors will be joining Blackman for the three day convention, which incorporates a programme of author events, hands-on workshop sessions, drop-in activities and book-signing sessions.

YALC will showcase the best of UK YA, as well as continuing to play host to special appearances from US YA stars. This year’s event will also feature appearances from some of the authors shortlisted for The YA Book Prize, a brand new prize for UK and Irish YA books from The Bookseller.

An initial list of just a few of the authors taking part has been announced today, including US YA superstar and creator of the Mortal Instruments series Cassandra Clare. Also appearing at the event will be TV personalities turned authors Charlie Higson and Arabella Weir; creator of the international bestselling Skulduggery Pleasant series Derek Landy; and award-winning Young Adult author Patrick Ness. Joining them are Youtube star Carrie Hope Fletcher; author of the Night School series C J Daugherty; and of course, Blackman herself.

More author names, and full details of the programme, will be announced in due course.

Managed by Booktrust, in partnership with Showmasters, YALC continues to position YA books at the heart of today’s popular entertainment culture, placing reading alongside TV, films, comics and gaming in the vibrant environment of London Film and Comic Con.

i see it says about buying tickets for it, does this now mean it costs more on top of what we pay for normal tickets? Also what if you have already bought your entry ticket, how do you upgrade? I saw on the tickets page the YALC full weekend ticket is £6 more but there there is a list of times. Do you only need to get the YALC ticket if we wanna go in that section between those times and then the rest of the event openings time its open for everyone. Sorry the wording on the ticket page is a bit confusing

The YALC tickets grant exclusive early entry to the YALC section of the show between 1pm - 3pm on Friday, and 9am - 11am on Saturday/Sunday - after these times the YALC area will be open to all LFCC ticket holders. The YALC ticket also gives priority seating in all talks.

Good to know thank you for the swift reply. Is there any way to upgrade a normal LFCC entry ticket to YALC if you have already purchased it?

Ok, I'm very tired so apologies if my question seems silly, but....... I understand the YALC ticket grants early permissions for the ticket holders into the YALC section but would they then need an actual entry ticket to LFCC on top? That's not quite clear to me. Or does the YALC ticket double up as an entry ticket for LFCC as well? Trying to work out costings as I have my not so Mini-Me badgering me........

Also as I'm coming with her, if I only have an LFCC ticket would that then mean I won't be allowed in the section with her (as she's 14) because I don't have a YALC ticket.

Would the YALC ticket allow her access to the LFCC part of the show?

I'm going to get this confirmed when the office opens, but seeing the YALC ticket "section" is specifically mentioned it's my understanding she'll need a LFACC tpic on top if she wants to do both sections and be at the YALC from the very beginning.

Any LFACC ticket holders can cross over to YALC after 11 AM, that's confirmed.

Yeah and that's why I'm querying it as I think it's a lot of money to pay other wise if that's the case. It's all about the books for her but she also wants to get in early!

anyone know if Charlie Higson signed anything other than books last year? :-)

I met Charlie last year and he was happy to sign my Swiss Tony 8x10 I had however I did buy his book first. I think Charlie will accomodate as long as you're buying his book as well. If you just go up with Fast Show items there's potential for a refusal I think.

Is there a more direct email my publisher can use, or someone specific to get in touch with outside of Showmasters regarding this, as it is something my publisher would very much like to get me involved in but they get little or no response regarding it. Any help would be gratefully and happily received!

Which e-mail address dd they try? The office e-mail would be the one to use. They're just seriously backed up at the moment.

Does anyone know if gold ticket holders automatically get early access to YALC or if there is an add on they can buy?

There's going to be a short FAQ up next week hopefully which answers more questions than I currently can answer.
