Bad News: Fire Destoys a Set From The Hobbit

Fire-on-the-Hobbit-Set.jpg

Just when you think there’s nothing else that could slow down the production of Peter Jackson’s movie, The Hobbit, more bad news hits the production. On the verge of a green light (we think) news comes in from Deadline that:

A fire has engulfed the New Zealand workshop set which would have been used for the Tolkien movies. It took 50 firefighters three hours to quell the blaze in Wellington. All that’s left now is a burned-out warehouse at Jackson’s Portsmouth Miniatures Studio which had been used in the past as a specialist miniatures shooting facility, one of the few in the world, to create special effects for his The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

I was at Hobbiton last November, and they had already begun cultivating the grounds for the new sets back then so that the greenery and trees would have a true settled look to them. The interesting thing that we got told back then is that this time round, they're supposed to be laying deeper foundations to the hobbit holes and other buildings so that they can be left behind once filming has finished. It would be awesome to go back when it's all done!

I think the chances of anyone else playing Gandalf would be beyond belief. He has said on record it is and always will be the greatest role of his life. Sir Ian would never let anyone else place Gandalf. Probably just part of contract negotiations.

There is nothing on his website to suggest he will do only half a film, as David said imdb not reliable

Im pretty lucky as I live in Wellington / New Zealand at the mo so get to chat with guys at Weta Workshop quite regularly.. They had a casting call here a couple of months back for size doubles and you cant help noticing a distinct increase of either really tall or really small people around the city!! Stone Street studios also has a nice big green screen in theyre parking lot which im guessing is for some of the staged outside studio work.. Oh yeah and the Remarkables ski field in Queenstown has been rumoured to be one of the key locations for the Misty Mountains scenes.. Wellington Airport introduced a couple of trolls to theyre new Weta Giftshop several months back which made me wonder whether they were test sculpts for the film. So yeah its all shaping up nicely. The Hobbition Movie Set tours end mid January so I wouldnt be suprised if filming starts pretty much then. Youve gotta love New Zealand, its the home of middle earth!!

No thanks to the unions -it came very close to being made in Ireland :)

IMDB is pretty much useless as a source of future film information as DavidB says - but no-one else is going to be playing Gandalf. That said, if I were Peter Jackson and I wanted Christopher Lee to reprise the role of Saruman (even in a cameo), I'd be wanting to film it sooner rather than later. I don't think Chris will be around for too much longer.

Also, I agree about Brian Blessed. I think he's a bit long in the tooth to play a dwarf, but I suspect that PJ would love to shoehorn him in somewhere!
