From what I heard, he had a major falling out with another cast member. He seems happy to attend events as long as that cast member is not there. I must admit though, that it did start to amuse me when Chakotay kept going on and on and on about "hakunji moya" (I have absolutely no idea how you spell it) and whenever something exciting was happening on the bridge, whatever it was, he'd always be pressing buttons on that small box-thing that used to be just down to his left.
