Phantom
Thats a very very interesting and unique guest, i remember her well.I wonder what Kitster and the red haired kid are up to. Its a funny thing the 10 year celebration of TPM. It will be a bittersweet occasion for many myself included. Ill never forget the wide eyed and exited SW fans at the midnight screening prior to the start of TPM nor will i forget the dazed and dissapointed SW fans spilling out onto the streets of Manchester after the end of TPM moping around like something out of a George Romero flick. Funny thing is i bet they watched it again. I did.....4 more times and although i wanted with all the strength of a Jedi wrestling a Gundark for it to improve on repeated screenings it never did. A great time but not a great movie. Edited April 28, 2009 by Phantom

A great time but not a great movie. I genuinely believe that it is unfairly maligned. Sure there's a 'touch' too much Jar Jar and the pod race is a lap too long but for me it still stands out as being a great movie. People expected too much of it. Sure there's a 'touch' too much Jar Jar and the pod race is a lap too long but for me it still stands out as being a great movie. People expected too much of it. George Lucas lost something around the early 80s IMHO. As for the film, there was good to it - the final lightsaber duel is still a standout moment, and Liam Neeson was good casting. But there was a lot wrong with it. People forget that he didn't direct Empire, or Jedi... everything that was right about Empire in particular you can credit to others - Kershner sure, but particularly Lawrence Kasdan. Lucas should never have written the screenplay himself for any of the prequels. I think you're right that people expected too much, but with the right people on board at a high level in the process we would have seen 3 very different films. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had a similar problem - Lucas shouldn't have been allowed to exert so much influence over the script. He can't write comedy, and he can't write good dialogue. Harrison Ford carried that film on his shoulders, and he really shouldn't have had to - Crusade stood up on it's own mainly because Lucas had so little involvement in it. Its been said a million times before but Jar Jar makes the movie unwatchable. It doesnt matter how great Liam Neeson,ILM on the whole,John Williams score and the efforts of Ray Park were whenever Jar Jar turns up onscreen everything turns to **** TPM is like being served a well prepared soup made with the finest ingredients that has a turd floating around in it. I too was in denial for years but i came to my senses on the way out after watching AOTC which again was PODU! So meessa cant be putting all a da blame on dat cwazy Gungan. I think George Lucas did have a small point when he said that half the problem is that you're no longer a kid yourself. Your adult personality would have said the same about the Ewoks - and rightly so. But there was a lot more wrong with that film than Jar Jar. The thing for me is that when I watched the original trilogy as a kid, I loved them all of course, but as I've grown older I've come to appreciate Empire for being a truly great film in it's own right, whereas Jedi charitably isn't. Same with Raiders Of The Lost Ark. If I watch Temple of Doom now and I'm honest with myself, it's not good. In fact, all told Skull is the better film (not by much, but it is). It's just the age that I was when I saw Temple that makes it seem the other way around.

Anyway...back on topic (because it's the same argument I've been having for 10 years and I'm bored of it). Yay for Megan signing. More TPM guests please. Your adult personality would have said the same about the Ewoks - and rightly so My 13 year old self was not a fan of the Ewoks or come to think of it the Max Rebo band. Sure Jedi isnt a great movie if you step away from it all but it does have some of the trilogys best moments - Lukes chat with Vader on Endor, the speeder bike chase,Palpatine etc but as in TPMs case moments do not a movie make. No they don't. Crystal Skull had some good moments too - actually quite a lot of them. As for Jedi, I actually agree with Abstract Harmony - the last 30 minutes were great, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Didn't make it a great film, but that last 30 minutes was better than anything we saw in the prequel trilogy. Maybe it was the Falcon... I still think it was a mistake for Lucas not to include it. After all, it was an old freighter when Lando got his hands on it, let alone Han.

Have to disagree with you here. I thought Jar Jar Binks was brilliant - him and Liam Neeson made the movie for me.
