I agree, Sean Astin really shone in this film. I just returned from seeing it. I have to say i thought they did an amazing job. They missed out quite a lot i was looking forward too, however they did all they could and pretty well at that. Bits i thought were done particularly well - The Grey Havens - so not how i imagined it, yet so beautiful. Shelob, (her, not the whole frodogoinginaloneness, i also missed one particular bit of the books where they are trying to get through the web and only sting can cut it.) Eowyn, Merry, The Witch King The witch King in general The battle of the pelenor fields The return to the shire ( i expected it to be horrible after they cut out scouring of the shire but it suprised me) Things i didnt enjoy - The bits where Arwen talks That orc in command - he looked like a pig, not an orc. WHY? Frodo telling sam to go home - there was no point. "A Diversion!" - legolas - well duh. Legolas' hairband at the end looked a bit feminine for my liking. again - WHY? The prolonged shots of togetherness at the reunion. The frodo off the cliff bit at the end - hmm. Lack of eowyn +faramirness The Eye of Sauron being some kind of lighthouse. *blink blink* Not enough depth around denethor Fotr is still my favourite book. Fotr is still my favourite film.
