Aakerman
Hello everyone I wanted to create a seperate topic from "Schedule of events over the Eternal Twilight weekend". I could see that a lot of us would end up spamming that thread with ideas, links, photographs, talks and inspirational things on what we are going to wear for the 1901 Chicago Party, Sunday. Personally I intend to dress up if I can manage. I am awful at sewing; I don't have a lot of money and not a lot of time. I will try though! I intend to wear a raincoat and wellingtons for the La Push Beach Party and I intend to wear a dress for the Prom Casino Party. That is in theory dressing up, it might not be as difficult to put together as this one, but in my opinion this idea is just so fascinating! It's hard to come up with ideas, the era before 1901 was Victorian, but as far as I can tell that was only in the United Kingdom and its colonies. This is in Chicago after all. In 1901 - 1910 we should have the Edwardian era; question is if it is the same in US. I thought about heading to the library for an art book, maybe I could find some painting from around 1901 and be inspired by a dress there. We will see :) So discuss here, share links, photographs, ideas, how far are you? Got a drawing of it? Where do you find inspiration? Etc. For La Push Beach Party, go here. For Prom/Casino Themed Party, go here. Adding a post from the other thread here, to start this off, because I think the information and the link is very helpful. http://www.vintageblues.com/history_main.htm In fact, fashion came from France, so in the US, it was slightly the same trends as in Europe. All the paintings I've found show the same kind of dresses. If you find something more interesting, I'd be glad to know it =) That'd be great if you find that there is something different, and share it here ^^ I'm still making some research, but I can't find anything else than that. JaneDoe
I have a friend from South Dakota who makes historical costumes and I asked her about this one. She confused me a little by saying are we looking at dressing from 1901 the year of Edwards birth or 1918 the year of his rebirth! Because fashion changed a lot in that time. Anyway, I was sure that since it was 1901 Chicogo...1901 it is 'duh'! So she will make me something. I had her make something for my daughter last year. It cost about £45 with shipping but was so worth it. Her things are beautifully made...she sells on ebay.
Evie_Nitram
http://www.vintagecostumers.com/historicalcostumes00s.htm some pictures for ideas... I'm not especially inspired by them though... I think I prefer the more victorian-esque clothing to the edwardian.
isa_lily
this topic is a great idea Humm .. for the fashion trends at that time, it's quite difficult to say, as it's a time when fashion evolves a lot... But I've already made up my mind on the dress I'm gonna sew ^^ More Victorian style though. I'll be the young ermite lady who didn't hear about Edwardian style
Aakerman
I thought a bit about it. Since I live in Denmark and have to be able to bring everything I need with me in a decent suitcase, I can't really bring some huge Victorian inspired dress with a big skirt. That is for sure. I like the Edwardian style though, also it would probably be easier for a newbie like me to create. Thanks for the link also! I don't like too much attention, even though I'll dress up, so maybe I can hide a bit here! Would have been a lot of fun if it was the 1920's, I love that style! I come from France, so I'd have the same problem ^^ But I'm used now to carry huge suitcases. I think that should be somewhere in the Olympics : try to carry a 37-kg-heavy suitcase + your other luggages (I don't really travel light ^^), that's an exploit XD If you ever need some stuffs for the Victorian Era, I have a coat/vest I won't use, who is really Victorian-stylish that i bought in Japan, I have some blouses (mainly white, and one with high collar in black), and a skirt. Just in case, because I understand that when you're a student, you can't really afford to buy expensive clothes. Feel free to ask if you need anything =) I don't really have anything Edwardian though. And you're right, I'd have loved the 1920s, it's a bit easier, and I LOVE the fashion at that time sooooo much >...<

Aakerman
A little search on "Edwardian" on ebay helped me a lot. There is quite a few dresses there, I'm not going to buy one because they are quite expensive + shipping cost. But at least it gives a few ideas and pointers. I like the white dresses with laces and soft pink silk ribbon. :) So pretty. I made myself a Photobucket Album where I have uploaded all the photos I've found as inspiration into different folders, there are lots! I will add as I go along :) There are also details shots. Aakerman's Photobucket Album -> 1901 Chicago Party. Just look at the albums on the left side. EDIT: I updated the album with more photos, hats, shoes, fans, mixed album and a dress or two more. amy-s-keeper
Oh I feel like this will be a tough one...I'm not good at sewing, so I won't even try! *lol* And I guess I won't be able to afford a huge dress - and also won't be able to bring it with me to the event...after all you can take only 20 kilos, and my suitcase is almost that heavy, when I'm not attending a con! *lol* So well...I guess I'll have to make my mind up about something....luckily we've still got some time. And I'm glad we can share some ideas here. :)

Aakerman
I am heading to the library this afternoon to pick up two books I ordered which should have some information on the fashion from 1900 to 1910! I really hope they are good. If there are any nice photographs or drawings in them, I'll make sure to scan them and upload here :)
bewarethepossums
In response to people wanting costumes that aren't too covered up, this top I just found on ebay is supposedly Edwardian (though I have no idea if it's actually in the right style at all - though it does look it). It goes up to the neck, but is all lacy and see through at the front so I think is perfectly "flirty"! I would have bought it, but I'm not a size 10 darn it. Ebay listing here! That is definitely.. a great look and flirty!! (although now that you guys pointed out there will be no guys there.. I am kinda thinking who cares! Thanks for the look.. I am definitely leaning towards more Edwardian that Victorian..
Aakerman
Victoria ruled until 1901 where she died and Edward took over there. So this particular year brought a big change both in fashion and what not. So some mix of late Victorian, early Edwardian.. pure Victorian, pure Edwardian. It's probably all good as long as it isn't ipod and jeans xD Don't know if there will be guys, I just assume there will be more girls

I'm quite a lot into Gothic Lolita Fashion so I have an outfit which is Victorian style (blouse+ skirt+upperskirt+ vest) but without bustle and kinda dark. If you ever need pictures, i can try to find some of the clothes on the internet (i don't have pix of myself wearing it sorry). If you don't find any outfit, I can lend mine to you ^^ (i have jewelries i made myself to go with it too). I've never dressed up for a party or anything ( I've not worn a dress since my wedding day 11 years ago!!) but looking at these awesome pictures (thanks to all who posted) I'm beginning to change my mind. The guys costumes look cool too.
