1901 Chicago Party

Hello everyone ;)

I wanted to create a seperate topic from "Schedule of events over the Eternal Twilight weekend".

I could see that a lot of us would end up spamming that thread with ideas, links, photographs, talks and inspirational things on what we are going to wear for the 1901 Chicago Party, Sunday.

Personally I intend to dress up if I can manage.

I am awful at sewing; I don't have a lot of money and not a lot of time. I will try though!

I intend to wear a raincoat and wellingtons for the La Push Beach Party and I intend to wear a dress for the Prom Casino Party. That is in theory dressing up, it might not be as difficult to put together as this one, but in my opinion this idea is just so fascinating!

It's hard to come up with ideas, the era before 1901 was Victorian, but as far as I can tell that was only in the United Kingdom and its colonies.

This is in Chicago after all. In 1901 - 1910 we should have the Edwardian era; question is if it is the same in US.

I thought about heading to the library for an art book, maybe I could find some painting from around 1901 and be inspired by a dress there. We will see :)

So discuss here, share links, photographs, ideas, how far are you? Got a drawing of it? Where do you find inspiration? Etc.

For La Push Beach Party, go here.

For Prom/Casino Themed Party, go here.

Adding a post from the other thread here, to start this off, because I think the information and the link is very helpful.

In fact, fashion came from France, so in the US, it was slightly the same trends as in Europe.

All the paintings I've found show the same kind of dresses. If you find something more interesting, I'd be glad to know it =)

That'd be great if you find that there is something different, and share it here ^^

I'm still making some research, but I can't find anything else than that.

I think I'm just gonna get inspired from the style and design something myself...luckily my moms a tailor so she will make my dress if i ask her nicely. She's already working on my dress for my birthday :( The theme is Bond Glam

UPDATE!

So i was browsing my cupboard last nite and discover a really cute blouse...i bought it a long while ago but it totally reminds me the Edwardian style...or something along those lines. I also have a cute grey skirt but its too short...so i'm just gonna ask my mom to make me another skirt but the top style wud b th same.

I also found the perfect prom dress :poki: Its red, bare back. I'm gonna add satin gloves and pearls and i'm done :poki:

Haha, I don't think it is many peoples style. For sure not mine either ;P

Ill do what I can though =) but yeah obviously stitching a skirt and a blouse together here and there won't look like an original.. nothing to do about that though

OMG, the more I see, the more I get confused... This is so not my style and I have not a clue where to get clothes like that without spending a fortune. I might have to just miss out on a proper outfit for that night...

Don't panic!! If you can find a high necked blouse (think Lady Di when you first apeared in the 1980's) and a long skirt, you are pretty much there. Just tuck the blouse into the skirt and add a brooch at the neck, put your hair up if you have long hair and add some black boots/black shoes and dark tights and you are good to go. If you don't have a blouse with a high neck then even a plain shirt would do - just button the top button and tie a black velvet ribbon in a bow at the neck, add a shawl around your shoulders and you have an approximation of the Victorian school teacher look. I don't think any of us are going to be all that historically accurate, and I don't think it matters. As long as we are wearing something other than our ordinary jeans and T's, I think it's fine.

:) I'm glad you like it, I think it was a pretty awesome buy and to make it better I was stuck in a bidding war with someone that clearly wasn't going to give up so I did thinking I'd just find something else, so the other person won... but where the seller has lots in stock she gave me a second chance offer at the price I stopped bidding at so I got it for £38 which I think is a bargain considering she sells them for around £90+ on a buy it now :whistling:

Aaaand to make it even better I don't have to wear heels underneath lol! Uggboots ! No one would ever know heh

This is what im wearing its very Chiago thats why i picked it cos its Chiago themed. I didnt wanna go with the victorian thing cos that didnt reallt happen in USA. I think alot of people will have a huge verity of diffrent types of dresses! But flapper dresses like this one were very much "IN" all around america between 1900-1930 so i think its ideal :).

Thats stunning :) I think your right about everyone wearing different things.

I had thought the Flapper style came in in the 1920's, but my Fashion history is close to non existant so :P.

This party thread's like a little educational thread, I think I know more about the Victorian era now than I ever did before :D

You're right Kegan. 1926 was the year the Flapper style came in. Even in the early 20's skirts were worn below the knee, though they had begun to get straighter and shorter than the Edwardian style of the 1910's.
