vicky114
Hi since I started coming to these shows 8 years ago I have acquired many autographs and was thinking of adding them to my house insurance in case the worst happens. I was wondering if anyone has any idea where to get them valued or how I go about getting them appraised to be added to insurance? thanks
Rockstar6662
Someone I know asked about this very thing recently and no company was interested. Said they're of no value as autographs, only if on another item that's of high value and he's met Harrison Ford, George Lucas and various others who wouldn't do a normal signing event but was told they're of no insurance value. Something like that anyway. Autographs have no intrinsic value, only whatever you can get for them if you tried to sell them which probably wouldn't be much. By all means ask, just passing on what I've been told. Edited September 28, 2014 by Rockstar6662

Not_Pennys_Ship
I have mine on my home insurance but not at a sale value but what it would cost to replace them. But in an event of a claim, how can the replacement costs be verified?
snakeydavid
Take a photo of all of your autographs and send them to your Insurance company on a CD. Most house Insurances will cover collections so long as a single item does not exceed several thousands. Most of what you have I suspect will be worth what you paid for them. Values tend to rise sadly on the death of the person however not by that much. Hope this helps

But in an event of a claim, how can the replacement costs be verified? Simple enough for the insurer to email showmasters or other events organisers and ask what the cost of specific people were at a given time. You can provide links to photoshoots and proof of payment through bank, card or showmaster account printouts.
OurDek
There is an autograph auction company based in Nottingham who have auctions at the Radisson hotel in Heathrow who could give you a valuation for insurance purposes. It seems to depend on the insurance company but a friend of mine who has a large collection of modern and vintage autographs has been told to insure them separately, this may be because a large number of them date to before the 1970's and would be very difficult to replace. There is also the Stanley Gibbons/Frasers Autograph Guide that comes out annually and that could be picked up from somewhere like Waterstones, this gives a range of valuations for photos, documents and items. As it's published by a recognised name some insurance companies will accept the valuations the book gives.
mr fagan
Yes sadly like everything else anything is only worth something if someone else wants it. I could try and sell my Danny glover autograph and ask £40 for it but i bet i wouldn't even get £20 for it. Makes me wonder who the real mugs are... Well if all you see when you look at your collection is £££... To me my collection is priceless as they are all memories of moments in time I got to spend with people I admire.

Dannycarroll2007
The real value is in the story that goes with the autograph. I posted a similar post to this in general a while ago and items or collections under 5k are covered but you have to photograph them.

SciFiRob
Right thanks. I'll start photographing tonight. Take a video and upload it to a youtube account, make it private or unlisted Then you should have it there should it ever be needed! It's what I do.
