I saw ROTK on monday (Swiss premiere/press screening) and I was just totally blown away!! This movie is definitely the best of the three! I still don't really can't talk about it, 'cause there are so many things I love about that movie. Mostly it's great how PJ did the ending...it's like you really get a lot of time to say goodbye to all the characters...'cause for some parts it's not only the hobbits and everyone saying goodbye, it's also us saying goodbye to a journey that was just fantastic.

real spoiler

My favorite scene, as far as I can tell be seeing it for the first time definitely was the one with Aragorn coming up to the hobbits, after he's crowned. The hobbits lower their head in respect of the king. But Aragorn stands in front of them and just says that they're not the ones who should go on their knees. So Aragorn goes down on his knees in front of the hobbits and so do all of the other people standing around...it's just such a brilliant scene...when I saw it I totally burst out in tears and so did about everyone at the cinema.

spoiler end

Well and then there's a typical Orli-scene again..you'll know what I mean when seeing it! :P

Mhh...there's lots more I could say, but first I'm looking forward to seeing ROTK this evening again! :)

Have fun everybody!

Hugs,

Nyah

It's left me stunned and at a loss for words.

I cried at different places in the film, but for like the last 30 I just bawled my eyes out. I have four main fav scenes:

1) Chibi Eldarion!!!! That bit with Arwen's vision where she saw Aragorn with his and her son, Eldarion, surprised me cause I didn't expect to see Eldarion, but I LOVED it! PURE KAWAIINESS!!! Seeing the daddy side of Aragorn was just....*THUDS*

2) The reunion towards the end. That had me in tears (of joy), it really warmed my heart.

3) The Coronation. Absolutely fantastic, especially when everyone bowed to the Hobbits, wonderful!

4) The Grey Havens part (even though it had me in floods of tears)

Just got back from seeing it, having had only 3 hours sleep.

My fav bit agrees with several of the above, Aragorn saying "my friends you kneel to no one" was brilliant.

Hubby's fav bit was Gimli saying "that counts as one" to a wanderful Legolas scene, giving nothing away.

Forgive me if my english or spelling isn't 100% but I am shattered, 3hrs sleep gives you real sympathy for Frodo!! I'm crawling back to my pit now...to sleep perchance to dream

of hobbits and men...

pippins singing was great too, billy has quite a beautiful voice!!! shame about the eating that went on during it!

oh, merry and pippin at the start when they welcome gandi and co to isengard! 'i especially like the salted pork' heehee

there was so much great stuff i could go on forever....the bowing to hobbits bit was great....when pippin finds merry is sooo emotional!!loved it!!!

BIG FAT SPOILER reading this would ruin the film muchly if you've not seen it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

frodo going "its mine!" when he decides to keep it for himself!!!

oh and of course half naked elijah woodness of after the spider bit!!! although the book says frodo was totally naked hehe...

i thought the spider was really well done too, the way it makes u think its over and then comes back! peter jackson REALLY deserves an oscar for this film!!!

i'll shut up now coz ive said lots hehe....as you may have guessed i was muchly impressed

ok one question....the big evil thing at the battle who seemed to be leading things...is it just me who expected him to suddenly say "I'll get you next time gadjet!!!"

and did anyone else say "Geoffrey Rush" in time with their friend at the leader of the dead people?it sooo was him in his pirates costume...

ok i lied that was two questions....someone shut me up!!!

Hi

I saw the film today and really enjoyed it. It was well crafted and the battles sequences were superb. Having enjoyed the books I was not disappointed by the look into Mordor.

These films do have a sense of the epic about them. They are huge in scale and really suck the audience into the story.

MANY MANY MANY MANY SPOILERS!!!!

Well I was naughty and evil - and despite my chicken pox I covered up completely and went to see the screening I had tickets for (which makes me feel really guilty in case I've infected everyone - not to mention Viggo and Bernard and Ian and all the lovely people I met at the premiere) - that ring does odd things to a girl.

Other than the guilt it was completely worth it, it was everything I expected and more. This week has been a bit challenging, having to cancel a few trips and finding out that many of my relatives aren't coming to us for Christmas day (the chicken pox that stole christmas and all), so I guess I'm maybe not as emotionally stable as normal - which was pretty much evidenced when as soon as the first shot appeared (the delectable Andy) I burst into tears and pretty much didn't stop crying for the rest of the film.

I loved the introduction, it's always been one of those things for me, how they would introduce each film, and I have loved the way they have done each one. This one taking us right back into the Gollum-Smeagol pysche, as well as the mechanics of the Smagol-Deagol fight providing a symbolic comparison with the later Frodo-Gollum fight outside Sheolobs lair. Also the tiny moment where in a blink the eyes transformed from Andy's deseased globes to Gollums more familiar ones, though less technically brilliant than the Bernard Hill transformation in the second film, I thought was just beautiful. As I am talking about beginnings, I might as well mention 'ends' as well (sorry I doubt very much we're going to get a structure here and it's just a collection of rambling thoughts really). Well not really 'ends' more 'credits' really - the complete departure from the credits for the first two movies was initially shock, but their beauty combined with the song and the words 'the end' made me burst into tears all over again (only the second time that a films credits have made me do that). I felt that the decision to encapsulate some of the actors from all the films was perfect. It is fitting that the only film to have a prologue was the first and the only film to have (for lack of a better word) 'true' credits was the last - like the books these weren't supposed to be three seperate entities they are one complete film, and I can't wait until we can watch it like that. (Also on a credits note I'm sure everyone at one-ring is frustrated that while FIGWIT has finally made it on the credits he still hasn't got a name - 'elf escort' indeed)

Some of the film remains as a blur to me - emotions and feelings, with odd scenes shining really brightly. The disintergrating relationship between Sam and Frodo was heartbreaking, with Gollums machinations, making me hate him (though at the same time I will always always love him). So many little moments building this sequence up - the poolside fight, the lembas... but nothing really prepared me for Sams huddled form as Frodo left [oh s**t... I'm crying again..........] Through all the horrors in the trilogy the collapse in this relationship was the hardest for me to bear, because for a lot of the time it felt like the one thing that would remain strong and constant.

Of course for a lot of the early parts of the films are about seperations and I guess I should state now that this is probably going to be a very hobbit centric review (this is nothing against the other characters, it's just since the first time I read the books over a decade ago, I immediately connected and loved the hobbits - and the films haven't changed that). The most obvious other seperation is of course Merry and Pippin. This is another powerful moment, though perhaps I should mention some other Merry-Pippin bits first. Their first appearance is exactly as I'd always pictured it from the books, I can't say anything better than that. Theres another drunken hobbit scene - which I loved - just can't beat these hobbit table dancing clubs. The palantir scene - wasn't convinced at first, but I think I like it - certainly love the Gandalf questioning bit - the look on Pippin's face. And of course the leaving hurts.

Most of these bits are made for me by Billy - I have always been astonished by his talent - most of all by the sheer expressionism of his face - he has the ability to show so much and explain so much with such __________ of expression. One of my few complaints about the film (and is not a complaint about the vision, directing, acting or production - but merely the lack of time to tell the story) is that Merry's story is rather short changed - particularly his relationship with Theoden, which is not explored. It seems almost a loss not to see Merry swear fealty to the King, after having seen the photo for so long - for me as a book reader, it is hard loss for other reasons - it is an important step in Merry's journey (which in the book is of course climaxed with Theodens death - which in the film is also overlooked - as is Eomers discovery of Eowyn on the battlefield (though this is of course mirrored in the extended two towers with his discovery of Theodred)) and of course it means you lose the comparisons between Theoden and Deneathor as leaders. It does feel during a lot of the film that it is rushed and things are passed over - particularly the faramir-eowyn story, but I'm not sure there was any other way it could be. Ironically this is also a complaint I have to some extent of the last book. The reason that the Sheolob attack was moved to Two Towers was because the last half of book 6 was given to saying goodbye (and though I love that part of the book it means the climax of Frodos quest is squeezed into half a book). I felt that perhaps Tolkien should have made it longer - put the goodbyes into a Book 7. But then that's just my thoughts. Anyway I think many of these problems within the film will be sorted out within the Extended Edition (can't wait to see that one)

Back to Pippin - Pippin was always my favourite character in the book because he had the strongest positive growth throughout his journey. There are almost too many Pippin moments for me to sort them in my head or clarify them. So many wonderful moments with Deneathor - one in particular as he swore his oath and Deneathor took his face in his hand - for some reason for me it seemed one step away from child abuse - and brought home to me what it must have been like for Boromir and Faramir to grow up. Other moments were just as powerful like the pyre (so difficult to forget in the books and more so in the film) but perhaps they all pale into insignificance for me when compared to the song (which I'm sure we'll hear much more about on these boards). In my mind nothing could have given these moments more strength or poignancy. Although I agree that the eating ruins the performance it some way - for me it also makes the sequence with the delicate beauty and innocence of the song and Pippin's sorrow as he sings it intercut with Faramir's pointless heroic ride, which has no hope (especially after the loss of his brother - truly the closest thing he ever had to a father - and Deneathors disgust) underscored with that relentless uncaring chewing - that's a scene that will not be forgotten quickly.

Speaking of songs there was one I missed, as it was my favourite from the book - Sams song in Cirith Ungol:-

In Western Lands beneath the sun, the flowers may rise in Spring

The trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finces sing

Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear

The Elven stars as jewels white amid their branching hair

Though here I lie at journeys end in darkness buried deep

Beyond the towers strong and high, beyond the moutnaisn steep

Above the shadows rides the sun and stars forever dwell

I will not say the day is done nor bid the stars farewell.

But then I think the way they did it is perhaps stronger, rawer and more immediate - but I don't really want to talk about that scene yet. One thing I wish to say is what a wonderful job the writers did incorporating Tolkiens words. So much of the words of the Frodo and Sam relationship - down to the voice-over at the end are my favourite phrases and words - that I sort of carry with me - and hearing these actors that I've come to love saying them meant so much.

I think perhaps I have said to much, and have too much left to say - so many cool moments that were just cool for themselves - the lighting of the beacons, the armouring of the Witchking, the way his Nazgul wrapped it's wing around a turret to secure itself, the angle the camera as the spider climbs above Frodo, the way it spun it's web around him and of course the murmakil. And so many moving moments, and beautiful moments that I can't begin to list - and for me at least the ending was perfect.

So yes, finished in a hurry [because I need to go reapply the camomile lotion] and not saying everything I want, because I don't think I can at the moment.

Maybe they'll be more later

i loved lots about this movie. i have to agree with the kneeling to the hobbits bit..... wasnt it great to see them taller thean everyone else!!???"

i also love the bit at the end with frodo and sam on that rock surrounded by the lava! frodo id like..." i remeber the shire. the trees the river...." and sam just says "rosie cotton!!" bless him. i love sam him carrying frodo was another tear jerker for me too.

I agree, Sean Astin really shone in this film.

I just returned from seeing it. I have to say i thought they did an amazing job. They missed out quite a lot i was looking forward too, however they did all they could and pretty well at that.

Bits i thought were done particularly well -

The Grey Havens - so not how i imagined it, yet so beautiful.

Shelob, (her, not the whole frodogoinginaloneness, i also missed one particular bit of the books where they are trying to get through the web and only sting can cut it.)

Eowyn, Merry, The Witch King

The witch King in general

The battle of the pelenor fields

The return to the shire ( i expected it to be horrible after they cut out scouring of the shire but it suprised me)

Things i didnt enjoy -

The bits where Arwen talks

That orc in command - he looked like a pig, not an orc. WHY?

Frodo telling sam to go home - there was no point.

"A Diversion!" - legolas - well duh.

Legolas' hairband at the end looked a bit feminine for my liking. again - WHY?

The prolonged shots of togetherness at the reunion.

The frodo off the cliff bit at the end - hmm.

Lack of eowyn +faramirness

The Eye of Sauron being some kind of lighthouse. *blink blink*

Not enough depth around denethor

Fotr is still my favourite book. Fotr is still my favourite film.

I just got home from seeing it.....Lets just leave it at this...I sat through the entire thing with either my mouth wide open or crying..One exception of laughter was legolas's 'Moment', That was brilliant he he...The crying pretty much started from when the rohirrim are about to charge...Oh...wait...no...When Merry runs up the tower thing when Pippin goes....and it didnt stop till...The credits...Damn my eyes hurt now...Can't describe this film so I wont...I don't have a favourite scene either but the Hobbits, merry and pippin included for the first time, really stole the show. I've never come out the cinema smiling so much *Sigh* ...Don't feel like talking...Wondering if seeing it at the meet is a good idea now...I'll be tired from all the crying...And, they all deserve oscars...they should get renamed to the Lordies!

Just got back from seeing it! I don't think there are any words to describe it, it's absolutely amazing! I cried SOOOO much at the Grey Havens! & when Frodo told Sam to go home, my heart was breaking! & when Sam carried him up the mountain & when Merry & Pippin were parted! & when everyone bowed to the hobbits! & when Aragon shouts "For Frodo!" My god, did I stop crying?

Loved Gimli's response to Legolas's oliphaunt action! & when he said "certain death, small chance of success....what are we waiting for?" :D

Also, loved Eowyn & the witchking - "I am no man!" Girl power, lol!

Merry & Pippin at Isengard were hilarious, & Pippin at the wedding! Billy's got a great voice!

Really there's too many fantastic parts to mention because the film itself is just phenominal. When it finished everyone in the cinema started to applaud, & that NEVER happens where I live! Peter & Sean for Oscars!
