Honestly tough to choose.

For mostly nostalgic reasons, the Friday The 13th series. I'd say only the first one was "scary", but I have a soft spot for the sequels no matter how crappy they might be. Same with the Nightmare and Halloween sequels mostly.

Classics I actually believe are good and still effective:

Halloween (original obviously)

Nightmare on Elm Street (first one, but New Nightmare worked too)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, remake was better than some)

Alien

Dawn of the Dead (original, but sequel on a level with TCM)

Evil Dead (prefer it to the sequels)

The Hitcher (horror or thriller? hmm)

Hellraiser (far more effective than any Hostel or the like)

Last House on the Left (uncomfortable to watch, but hard to call 'good'?)

Candyman (guilty pleasure in my eyes)

Phantasm (same as above)

Nosferatu (more interesting as a product of its time)

Psycho (perhaps more notorious than really good, but deserving)

More modern ones that will be interesting to see if they hold up over the years:

Frontiers

Them

Inside

Rec

The Orphanage

Battle Royale

American Psycho (obviously not straight up horror ..)

Audition

Ringu

Switchblade Romance

The Descent

28 Days Later

Interesting to see how my tastes have changed to more foreign horror in recent years, though perhaps they're just pushing the boundaries and coming up with more original ideas than previously. I'm not saying they don't do sequels, but so much in the American market is remakes of foreign movies, or their own classics, or sequels etc.

Its weird I used to be a Horror Movie fan but don't really find any of them to be scary anymore. I did when I was younger used to be frightened to go up stairs encase some psycho with a knife or aliens ready to abduct me were up there but now I feel nothing at the moments of a film where people get scared and just judge Horror films on there storyline, miss being scared :D

I did like the Hellraiser series though (Just the first 3 films the ones after it really killed it).

I dont find horror scary anymore not since i was a kid anyway.

I enjoy the genre but i will say after watching the end of Dead Set i did something that hasnt happened in years....i slept with the light on!

To memory the last thing horror wise that scared me was the white figure in EXORCIST 3 that follows the nurse out the room in the distance with a big knife...that screwed me up bigtime.

Otherwise its not horror that gives me the willies in film - Joe Pesci and his brothers death scene in CASINO and the bit where the nuns/female missionaries are raped and murdered in SALVADOR....now those were chilling.

Well of course you dont find them as scary anymore - you're older now and your mind has developed and matured enough to realise it's all just a make-believe.

The prospect of standing in a bus que nowadays is far more scary than anything on the big screen.

The Crow

Constantine

They're horror films? Tehy're not scary at all nor were they ever meant to be? :(

The Craft

Ditto. :headscratch: :headscratch: :headscratch:

My two favourite proper horror films are John Carpenters The Thing (1982) and Alien (1979).

I didnt say The Crow or Constantine was scary, they are horror depending on your interpretation of the film, i am sure you can appreciate that.

I'd called The Crow and Constantine action-thrillers or even supernatural-fantasy to be more specific. I know they have elements often found in other horrors but I wouldnt call these 2 films straight-up horror. Sure they involve the supernatural but isnt there more to it that simply that? What is horror to you? I thought to most people horror was a film that scared or "horrified" them? Edited by nicky

I understand what you mean, like i said it depends on your own personal interpretation, i was thinking more on the lines of the subject matter of the film, as well as the supernatural element, i suppose it also depends on what type of horror you like too Eg Supernatural horror, Lasher filcks, movies like Saw, Hostel etc, i also love Japanese horror love The Ring and The Grudge. You mentioned the Craft before, one of my fave movies too, i also love Sci Fi, and movies that make you think lol

I don't think a movie's genre can be defined by an audience i.e. it can still be a horror even if someone isn't 'horrified' by it, just like comedies are still comedies even if some people don't find them funny at all ..

There are lots of different types of horror though obviously, and getting into sub-genre discussion is never a good place to go! Too many possibilities, and never many agreements lol

I think it's just easier to describe something as 'horror' .. I mean there's a reason why shops and online stores etc don't sub-divide everything into every possible genre.

Sure, it means they place some dvds in weird sections, and some bands in strange music genres that people don't agree with, but it's just a simpler way of looking at things. Music is often worse - I mean Play just has 'rock and pop' as a simple section!

Don't make me choose .. they're probably the only band that I like every song :( so it's always great to go to gigs as I never mind what they play  seen them at Wembley Arena, Wembley Stadium, a 200 fan preview of the last album, Royal Albert Hall .. lots of different places :D

Though I do think they should have their songs in better movies than Twilight .. sorry to those fans lol

okay had a think about this one now and have my serious answer

5)crooked house (not a film but if you watch it one after the other....)

4)alien abduction the mcpherson tape

3)hellraiser

2)logans run

and number one needs some explaining, this film isn't a horror but it messes with your mind so much that it scared me and my mate untill this very day

1) The Birth of a Nation

if you can track down a copy (its from 1915) and can stand a three hour silent movie then this will blow your mind hole

You can probably find it online somwhere in the Public Domain? Or is it banned? How about Song of the South? Loguns Run is horror? Or are you saying that cos like Birth of a Nation the idea and concept behind it and the reality frightens you?

Yeah but you can always tell if something is supposed to be funny but isnt ie. Epic Movie etc. :WINCE:

Forgot the say I love Cronenberg's The Dead Zone (1983) but not sure if that's horror - I'd call it more supernatural thriller. Also The Fly (1986) I think is an expertly made film but I find it uncomfortable to watch.

Cronenberg, man. What happened to him, he used to be hardcore horror but lately has been making regular thrillers, not horror at all. I liked eXistenZ (1999), that was the last true Cronenberg film he did I think though it was more sf, it had that icky bodily-deformity thing going on that he like so much.

the idea behind logans run is what scares me because in some countries they have somewhat resorted to that

what scares me about birth of a nation, which if you know it it isn't a horror movie at all, is that its really strong propaganda, the nazi did a good job but the guy that made birth of a nation is 10x better, after watching it i was annoyed with myself because i was sympathizing with the heroes of the movie and wanting them to win

i'll explain this for the people who haven't seen/heard of and are prop never going

the film was the first feature length american made movie, its three hours long and covers most of the american civil war, there are a few stories in it like young soildier just married leaving to fight and his wife worrying about him and such

but the last hour and a half of the movie is about the affrican american slaves rebeling against there masters and rioting, the "black" (not sure what is P.C. to say anymore) slaves raise all sorts of hell and kill and rape the white woman and such

to stop the "black" slaves a group of men form a Klan, they don't want to be punished by the law for being racist so they shove on white robes and white hoods.......you guys get where i'm going

so in the end your thinking "go KKK kill those......"

its how easy it brainwashes you that scares me

the film was acctually banned in america after people going to watch it started rioting over racist issues
