  1. Actually that's not strickly true, I've had conversations with non smokers who are againsts the ban on the same grounds as I am. I just think it's unfortunate that people see this as a good thing. And before anyone jumps at my throat, try and see beyond the smoking issue and the reality of what it means for a government dictating on personal choice!
  2. The Master says that the Time Lords brought him back to fight in the time war, but he ran away...so I'm guessing they had the power to bring him back. Does the tardis actually appear? I thought we just hear the Tardis materialising...I don't really remember
  3. My problem with the ban is what it represents. I smoke, and I'm not ashamed of it. But I will be persecuted for using a product that is legally available. Health grounds are always given as a reason, but if that were the only reason, surely the sales of all tobacco products should be stopped. That's not going to happen, I wonder why... I don't understand why we can't cater for all members of the public? I have always respected no smoking signs. I have stubbed out and moved tables if I saw that someone was bothered. So why can't people who do not smoke extand that same curtesy to me? Surely isn't that what tolerance must be? The real question is this: should governments legislate personal choice?
  4. Gridlock and Blink, right up there, I thought Blink possibly first on the list. Despite its flaws I liked Human nature/ Familly of blood. I thought 42 was dire...a re hash of the satan pit...same storyline, and I didn't think much of that episode either! I liked Simm as the master, but I think more could have been done with such a good actor, personally I blame the script, I will always be grateful to RTD for resurecting the show, but he should leave te writing to other people. I find his stories too immature and I don't think he knows the meaning of subtlety. The "budgie/ dobby/ Gollum" moment...The Master did have a thing about shrinking people to death in the Tom Baker era, the deadly assassin springs to mind. Well if the money had been there for the CGI, I might have bought it, but it was not, so I didn't. I wish the victory over the master was had been a little less ...er...pathetic. I loved the gun decoy, that was very doctor who, but I had anticipated something more doctor who for the final confrontation...neverming hey? I did like the death scene, I thought that was wonderfully acted both by Simm and Tenant, very moving if not a bit out of character for the Master, although I suspect he will be back in some way, shape or form in the future (wasn't he wearing the ring of Rassilon?) I'm sorry to see Freema go to boost Torchwood, I think the dynamic between her and Tenant was better it was with Billy Pipper. We shall have to wait and see!
  5. Hi Orihime Thanks for posting about this. I think a lot of us costumers have been eagerly anticipating this. In my opinion such an event shouldn't be too complicated. I would keep it to 3 categories. Under 16, over 16 entertainement ( movie, TV etc) and over 16 anime, with relevant prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each cat, all kids should get a small prize obviously! Bought costumes shouldn't be considered for the over 16, and please please please don't make this another popularity vote? I have entered Showmaster costume contests where brilliantly made costumes were totaly left out of the running because of that. I would also like to know before hand who is judging? Sorry if this sound pompous, but I won't enter a competition if I don't believe in the judges. I think a catwalk is the best idea, that gives the best and most equal way for the costumes to be observed. Putting on a costume and having on display to be judged is quite a brave thing to do, and a performance on top of that could put some peeps off entering, especially if they are entering solo. I think a cat walk in character would be sufficient. I really don't think anyone should have to "sell" their costume in the hot seat in front of everyone. Entrants should be pre registed prior to the show with a detailed "costume CV" and photo for the judges to look at before the masquarade. That should give enough info to the judge prior to seing the costume live. It also makes the contest fairer, we're not all confident public speakers! I would also make the show more sleek and professional looking for the public. Get an announcer, they give the entrant's name or username, and their character's name and what it's from. Each contestant get, say, 30 seconds( groups should get an extra 10 seconds per additional group member). The entrants could do a short write up about their costume on their costume CVs for the announcer to read out while they walk. That means having a running order! But it looks professional. Workshops are a nice idea but could be a legistical nightmare. I have ben involved in running costume workshops at a con before and it's more involved than it appears to be, and it was expensive too! Talks...again, I have been involved with costume talks and panels and they can be very informative and fun, but again it needs preparation and people qualified to present them. What I mean is it's not something that can be improvised. There are a good few talented people on this forum who are plenty qualified to give talks on costumes, such as Legolassie and Mich, but it all requires planning! Finally, I think the people involved in making this work should get some sort of compensation for donating their skills and time to the show. My thoughts on the subject, not that I've thought about it much...lol...anyone else? Steph
  6. It's not so much the lack of guests that troubled me, as they usually don't get much anouncement that early on, it's more to do with the fact that SM really havent been very forthcoming with the other details, as in hotels, replying to questions etc... I know Dirk has posted, but Ring*con uk still feels like it's up in the air. I'm not saying it's not going to happen, but it has that feel. Don't get me wrong, if they announce a great guest that I really want to see, and I happen to have the day off, I may still make the day trip...but I don't think that all cons are about, it's all about meeting likeminded people, seing and experiencing different things, as well as meeting the guests. But it's no longer an option for me
  7. Sadly it is now too late for me to take the time off to attend. I work weekends and needed to book near enough a week off for this show, I had been waiting for info about hotels and a bit more involvement from the organisers, as it was a toss up between too choices. The deadline for booking my time off is gone and without more actual details, I had to make a decision. Hoping you all have a great time.
  8. I remember seeing the sign on his table... it said "Doctors Without Borders"! I think! It's doctors without border, or Medecins sans frontiere here's a link, if you want more info :) Medecins sans frontiere
  9. I think there was also a certain professor: Dr Scott, or should I say Dr Everett Von Scott (a rival scientist)?
  10. I agree with you on that. Life on Mars was the best thing on TV for ages and I will miss it, but I am really glad they ended it on a high, before it dragged on and lost its appeal. I particularly liked the subversive nature of the ending, and the fact that they didn't actually explain anything but the reason for his coma. The rest is still left up to the imagination of the viewer, and that is so rare nowadays. That said, I'm not sure how I feel about about Ashes to Ashes...I'd have been quite happy if they had left it alone...time will tell?
  11. I have signed it a few weeks back, but never thought to put it up on here. Doh!!!
  12. yeah, but their costumes don't require that you take all your kit off...lol Huh? The women's costumes in the film don't require you to wear close to nothing? My point exactly. I took your mention of "bravery" to apply to the Spartans, who wear precious little and are all built like brick sh*t houses. Now doing that costume would be brave! Being of female persuation, I don't think I'll do that! The women's costumes are styled on classical greek fashion, which I don't think require any kind of bravery to wear. Love, I don't know you that well
  13. yeah, but their costumes don't require that you take all your kit off...lol
  14. I'm quite excited about this new publication, there is an article on the Tolkien Society web page...how about you guys?
  15. Being of the female persuation I think I'll pass on that one! lol
  16. Hi Jo, I made this costume for the opening ceremony for the first another show, I was already working on the Elven Armour at the time, and the deadline was aproaching fast! So I didn't do the embroiderie on the sleeves, as I didn't have time so I enlisted the help of my BF's mum. I did the collar and the "baseball stich" on the princess seam, which is also embroidered and took much longer than anticipated. How it was done was pretty simple, I copied the design of the sleeve and collar and using decal paper I reproduced the design on the fabric with a white pencil, then I slavishly went over the design. The stiches aren't complex at all, but the fabric I used, which was a heavy peach skin, was very dense and made the work very hard. I'm currently working on a Shieldmaiden outfit for which I will do the embroidery on the corset/bodice. I'm still in the planning stages of the needle work, so more on that later, but i'm fairly slow!!! Cheers
  17. Hey peeps Here are my costumes Wyrdsister's costumes I should be bringing these if I go...by the way, that's not me in most of those pics...lol Cheers
  18. Hi Gondorgirl, I'm with you on this one. I get fed up with repetitive threads as well, I don't really mind people asking over and over after the same request: I just don't bother reading those threads. And I would hope that seniority on this forum isn't required to express the opinion that you fell a member is treated unjustly because their level of English. So with that, welcome to the forum, and I look forward to meeting you at Ring*Con UK :)
  19. Want doesn't me your going to get. and it's Elijah Wood and Viggo I'm pretty sure if you like them so much you should know how to spell their names. Yeah yeah it's getting on people's nerves now. So stop! *high-fives you* I think I love you, hobbitlover!!! Me too! YAHOO: I'm resisting the urge to go back the original post and correct the grammar, punctuation and spelling! Rosie xx I'm sure everyone has had the case of the typo, and Lotsiegirl isn't English, so please don't everyone get on her case about grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  20. I doubt it, not everyone can afford con, and Empire Day has been running for ages and that has never stopped SM having SW guests at the signing events before:P
