Filming

Hi all,

Quite an exciting experience for me in Birmingham today. They are filming a Zombie film with Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine right outside my office. Got to watch a couple of scenes been filmed and get really close to the cast and crew which is an unusual but fun experience here in Birmingham.

I would love to hear other stories of things been filmed that you got to watch. Any stories to share would be awesome.

cool.

I don't live in a filming area but back 1971, my mother and dad got back then the chance be extras in a british TV Serie called COLDITZ and be in a scene with Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart, Prince Valiant, White Feather, Austin Powers) which was filmed in our village in Switzerland. They found it interesting but also exhausting to walk many times for the same scene

Myself beeing in "Quantum of Solace" in the Audience of the Opera Scene, filmed in Bregenz/Austria

As some may know, I live in Southend and due to certain infamous landmarks (The longest Pier in the World) this town has seen its fair share of the rich and Famous.

Most noteably the cast and crew of EastEnders have filmed down here, and in many cases have generously used the seafront and Pier - in 2011 people driving along the seafront would have seen Dot Branning/Cotton walking along and during/inbetween takes having a crafty cigarette.

Southend Airport was used prominently in 2013 for the Kat and Alfie getting back together after Alfie ditched Roxie at their own wedding ceremony to race to the Airport with Ian storyline - a road quite near to the Airport was doubled as a road in London, it took them the good part of a day with different Camera set ups. Stunt arrangers to put together a scene that would last no longer than a minute on screen.

The scene was rather simple:

Ian and Alfie are stuck in traffic behind a truck with boxes on it, theres a car crash in front with drivers yelling at each other whilst Police officers are in attendance, Alfie gets out the car clambers onto the truck in front, sees the road ahead and from behind him hears a pizza motorcycle coming along, knowing thats the only way he can get to the Airport to see Kat he jumps off the truck stops the Pizza dude, gives him Ians watch et al in exchange for the motorbike then (and this wasn't seen on air - he zig zags around the parked cars) and off.

Sounds pretty simple but everything was so intricately done - especially the stuntwork which was overseen by Stunt Arranger Lee Sheward - because the road they used is one that normally buses go through they had to be diverted on that day and because there were approximately three hundred onlookers from the local area plus a cast and crew of fifty ish that was one very busy street but because we were all well behaved and very quiet we were allowed to be seriously up close to Lance Kneeshaw (a frickin fantastic Director)

Apart from EastEnders we've had the likes of Paul Freeman (LITERALLY) filming down the road from here in (Hard Boiled Sweets) back in 1999 Sean Bean was down here filming, then of course Minder, the Bill, etc.

Some years ago I was in London and while I was walking on the Southbank Walk , I noticed big lamps and people who were shooting a movie scene. Staff members asked me and people who were walking to stop. After the scene was shot, I started to walk again and I saw a man who was talking with another one. That man was Woody Allen , who was explaining to his actor a scene to play.

I've took a pic of Woody Allen, who was wearing one of his typical hat. ( I hope the pic is visible)

I think the movie was titled "YOU WILL MEET A DARK, TALL MAN" and in the cast there was also Anthony Hopkins.

I have to add maybe some more infos about Colditz and how I did find out:

I realldy didn't knew it that my parent had been in that show. Because back in 1971 - people in a small village havent had a TV or went often to a movie theater. So they did know actors name and how big the star was: and Robert Wagner might a big name - most memorable of course from Hart to Hart.

In february 2014 there was a Con in London where Christopher Neame appeared. So i thought december 2013 I should go and bought some more material / DVD's - so I bought "Colditz". I watched until episode 15 "Gone Away". Almost entire show was filmed in England... so there was then a scene with a river and a bridge. I do know only London but that scene / landscape did looks familiar to me... and I thought.. why the hell i know that.

Well its just about 6 km far away from my hometown located. And I thought no way... could it be that my parents..?

A few minutes later: there was a scene when Robert Wagner walking down the streets... filmed in the village where still live... my mother next to Robert Wagner. I was by far surprised of course because: no one from the village nor the extras have ever seen it. It was the first time after 42/43 years.

The most interesting from the historical part: "Colditz" based on a true story. And those guys who escaped in the WW2 from Colditz used the Singener Route. Our village is located in reality next to german border and they really crossed here the border to get free.
My mother was born in 1935 just a couple km far away. Her farmhouse was the closest to the german border and forest. And she remember that she has seen people (jews, and others) crossing the border and came to their house.

so I told this Christopher Neame and it was at all a very interesting conversion about Colditz and his other works.

I saw some of the filming and met David Boreanaz whilst he was filming Bones in London a few years ago and that was completely by accident, just stumbled on the scene whilst I was walking along by the River Thames.

Also was on holiday in Kefalonia and we saw Nicholas Cage filming Captain Corelli's mandolin, again just by chance.

I was at Pinewood whilst they were filming Casino Royale, so saw some of the sets , but the Bond stage was closed, although randomly did bump into Michael Gambon who was there for another show I guess.

I think that is about it in terms of accidentally stumbling across film sets and seeing them filming

I've been to see lots of TV Shows and Comedy shows filming over the years at the BBC and ITV Studios but they were all planned trips where you needed to get a ticket.

I got to see some of the filming of Empire of the Sun way back when. The Brownies and Guide groups my sister and I were in were invited to go and watch so I was quite young and as a result don't have the best memory of it - I vaguely remember Christian Bale running passed the windows of a big house and got to meet Steven Spielberg.

I saw them filming a bit of Mr Selfridge last summer - they were filming on our road just as I was leaving work so I stayed a few minutes to watch.
