CSI-News Thread!

Some spoilers are seen as news. Interviews with the actors though informative can contain spoilers.

Therefore both spoilers and news have rights in both threads.

The spoiler thread was created specifically for spoilers regarding the three shows plots however, the news thread was created to spread news of anything the cast and crew were up to and as such runs the risk of having spoilers.

There shouldn't be any problems with this if certain rules are followed. If you don't want to be spoiled don't go in the spoiler thread. However if you want to post news *with* spoilers in, post it in the news thread with consideration (and with a lot of warning that the artical contains spoilers) for those people who like news but don't like being spoiled. Then it is down to the reader (not the poster) whether or not they want to read it.

Spoilers can appear any where. Even in the OT thread (spoilers for other shows/movies). People just have to treat every one as wanting to be spoiler free.

Net etiquette.

The CSI Effect

As season 5 of CSI arrives on DVD, the evidence doesn’t lie: the forensic franchise is leading the way in small-screen quality with big-screen style

With cinema attendance at an all-time low, it’s not really surprising that the wave of top quality TV shows have been steadily persuading us to stay at home, crash on the sofa and turn on the goggle box. But while we seem to be enjoying a new ‘golden age’ of Television, it’s worth remembering that the current crop of TV high flyers owes a massive debt to the movies.

‘I’ve been coining the phrase in the press a long time about doing Feature Television’, says CSI creator and day-to-day overlord Anthony Zuiker. ‘We create mini Bruckheimer-esque movies week-to-week with a colour scheme and a level of editing and sound and fractured time and pace.’

Zuiker’s background is as a movie fan: he worked for years as a tram driver in Las Vegas, punctuating his shifts with breaks to watch films and TV shows. And, like so many before him, he got his foot in the door of Hollywood by writing a script. ‘I wrote a spec [a draft script] called The Runner, about sports betting and that parlayed me into the business and I wrote the Harlem Globetrotters Story for Columbia. That got the attention of Jerry Bruckheimer, who called me in to se if I had an interest in doing television.’ The rest, as the old saying goes, is history. Zuiker now has three CSI shows running on one channel in the States, all of them ratings juggernauts that have been sold to hundreds of countries around the world.

But none of it would have happened without powerhouse producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The canny film maven saw the potential in Zuiker’s idea and backed him up. Nowadays, Bruckheimer's input is more peripheral (after all, the man has a film production stable to run alongside his TV teams), but he continues to be the driving force behind the show. ‘Jerry reads every script and watches every cut,’ laughs CSI Miami producer Carol Mendelsohn. When does he sleep?’

And what does Bruckheimer bring to the show? ‘I think it’s really learning the importance of pace, of taste, of cutting, of visual look and style and being bold in your visual storytelling,’ says Zuiker. ‘And taking a cinematic point of view. That’s what I learned from him.’

‘We emulate a lot of those same things today. Before CSI if you watch the shows, they were really of the slower mould. And one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in television is the fact that the audience is smarter than you, and you have to respect that and give them 30% and let them fill in the rest and take them for a ride.’ And it wasn’t just Bruckheimer. Zuiker found inspiration for the show¹s trademark look the zippy, CG-influenced camera angles that fly in and out of corpses from Three Kings. ‘When the bullet went in the chest, that's where I got the idea from.’

With Bruckheimer on hand to guide him, Zuiker found the right team to get the job done a team which still runs the show today. ‘We put together with the right team of Danny Cannon, Jerry Bruckheimer, the other producers and myself, to really create what this show looks like. And we've done that, and evolved it too. So I think it was just the right pack of people to do it.’ That driving ambition to change the face of TV led to some changes early on.

‘Jerry he had a vision in mind of what it should look like, so a lot of department heads were replaced to make it more visually appealing’, recalls star Marg Helgenberger, who plays CSI’s Catherine Willows. Still, even with the job losses, the CSI franchise has become something of a career saviour for actors and directors. Could you name many of the films Manhunter star William Peterson had worked on in the years before he accepted the part of Gil Grissom in CSI? And director/producer Danny Cannon was best known for the cinematic nightmare that was Judge Dredd before his rebirth as one of CSI's guiding lights. Finally, there’s David Caruso, who left one of TV's best cop shows NYPD Blue - for a less-than-stellar shot at the movies (Jade, anyone?) before CSI Miami found him the perfect role for his return to TV.

With such a driving need to focus on the procedural and the plot, do the CSI team ever worry that they’re sacrificing character for stylish lenses and bullet-wound CG? The actors certainly found it a problem in the early days, but that has since changed. ‘It’s what you call formula TV,’ says Gary Dourdan, AKA Warrick Brown. ‘When we first started, we needed to show more of the characters and now we’re going: “I need a day off. D’you think this could be about the crime, because there's so much character stuff going on!†I’d love a week off!’

That shift - particularly in the show’s fifth year - was a conscious effort on the part of Zuiker and co. ‘We’ve had an impact on procedural, but the challenge is to stick to the formula I’ve created, obey the procedural, but be able to lay in character moments that satisfy feature quality actors that are starving to do some acting in the shows. You can do mysteries all day long and at some point the actors will feel like they're just pawns in a game.’

Even with its procedural bent, the show continues to attract top talent, including some big-screen celebrity fans. Zuiker laughs at how little it took to persuade Quentin Tarantino to write and direct the Season Five finale Grave Danger. ‘I talked to him at Lawrence Bender's party he had a 9/11 fundraiser. I said: “Hi Quentin, I'm Anthony Zuiker, creator of CSI...†And he was, like, “Oh, I love that show!†He was quoting stuff I wrote. And the funny thing is this whole show is because of Quentin. I saw Pulp Fiction and I thought, “Wow, I think I could write this.†And then when he was approached years later by CSI Vegas to do the show I co-wrote that finale.’ Zuiker’s clearly a little in awe of Tarantino, but recalls that the time spent with him was well worth it. ‘He was quite a master of story and quite a smart individual and truly humbling, being with him for those couple of hours and talking story. If you ever want to feel that you¹re back on the tram, just sit down with Quentin Tarantino.’

I wanted one of those posted through my door too. BUT I found something better. A place that does a sort of CSI roleplay (not based on the show it's just people playing at being detectives etc) can have people volunteering to be victims. And what they do is make up all the case files in with photos of you and evidence. A guy I work with had one given to him for a birthday present!

Now I want one of those!!

Rory news

A Scanner Darkly: Here ( http://media.filmforce.ign.com/media/670/670907/vids_1.html ) you can find the first 24 minutes of the movie along with several interviews with Keanu Reeves, Richard Linklater, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane.

The poor soul doesn't interview very well. There is also the red carpet interviews on the next page too.

Please be aware that you have to confirm that you are old enough to view the first 24 minutes. As the film is age restricted.

The Empire website Sah posted on the Rory thread also has these clips but I believe it is as a result of a punter posting the above link I just did :WINCE::thumbup:

William Petersen news

William Petersen is to come back to the stage in a production of Dublin Carol (a play written by Conor McPherson) late this year.

However, I have read this play and even though I would love to see William on the stage, I would like to see him in something more challenging and a little... better. It is a matter of opinion though. I may yet travel over to Rhode Island to see the play, I just have to convince myself it's worth it.

As an actor though I would rather people came to see me act, not come to see me because of who I was. I like that people appreciate my work, what I do and how I do it. It is a matter of opinion and that's just mine.

Well it has to be the most popular, really!

It has the constant dramatic storylines that are NOT totally out of character for the show (seeing as they have been extreme from the start) and it keeps you entertained!

Mind you I can't really say much as I have to admit - I stopped watching when they killed Speed off. Heh.
