  1. I think it’s fair to say that this is another visual episode that really needs the scenery and sets to help it. As for the pace and it being 6 episodes long, remember these were never designed to be seen in one sitting. They were supposed to be viewed once per week, then never again. The style of TV then was serials which never ended. Nobody (outwith the professionals) really thought of them as individual stories they were just individual episodes. Not that I’m old enough to have watched this one as a kid but some of my favourite childhood stories seem to drag now when watched even at the rate of one episode a day but back then it was 22 minutes on a Saturday night and it flew by and you couldn’t wait for next week. TV has moved on for the better but not in all ways IMO.
  2. I think this story has one of the greatest character pieces ever between Doctor and companion where the Doctor is trying to make Victoria feel better about the death of her father. Some nice thoughts about his family too. It is a great scene which had never really been done before. It has nothing to do with the story or plot and wouldn’t be out of place in a modern episode.
  3. An upscale on a 4K TV will still provide a slightly better picture than a normal Blu-ray on a 1080p TV but the trouble with these upscales is that they are not that complicated (technically) a process and if your existing player has upscaling built in (which it almost certainly will unless it’s an old player) then it will upscale every 1080p show you play to 4K anyway and the result will look the same as if you purchased a (professionally) upscale disc. My fairly cheap Hisense TV even has a built in feature to do it with moderate results. I have 2 copies of Bladerunner 2049 one in UHD 4K and 1 on 1080p blu-Ray. They both look identical on my 65” 4K tv in terms of picture quality (sharpness etc). The REAL difference in quality has nothing to do with 2160 lines over 1080 or UHD it is HDR which players cannot add. This release DOES apparently have HDR so there will be a difference and it will be worth purchasing. This is the feature of 4K that has made the difference but everyone gets hung up on UHD and 4K. It massively changes the dynamic colour ranges of the movie and on a 4K TV makes the contrast in the picture stunning.
  4. Just noticed that it's Sam Neill's birthday today. He's 71! 7-1! No way did that man I met at LFCC look like a 70 year old. Happy birthday Sam and what's your secret?
  5. https://mashable.com/article/henry-cavill-instagram-response-superman-rumours/?europe=true The aforementioned instagram post
  6. The problem with this story is not the story it’s the fact that the only way to experience it is audio (well episode 2 apart which is a tremendous episode BTW with a great cliff-hanger). It is a very visual story. Take Jamie’s fight with the Turk. It goes on for ages and there is no dialogue. The first time I experienced it was a bootleg cassette of the off air recordings and with no explanation of what’s happening it’s just 10 minutes of noises. I have a great recon of this story that massively enhances the experience. The Daley’s are used properly, with the Doctor having a great resolution to their menace (which has now been overused but remember this was the first time that this had been done to the Daley’s). Maxtible’s greed taking over and Waterfield’s descent into madness when he realises what he has done are superb. This is definitely one of my 10’s.
  7. Thanks Queen. It’s not a massive problem, like you say it only happens occasionally but thanks for answering.
  8. It is unlikely that the talks will sell out. The capacity of the Enterprise stage is huge. Timetable clashes are very, very common and are nothing to worry about. They are easily dealt with. You cannot ask for the photo shoot to be moved because it is not your personal shoot. It is happening to everyone at the same time. The more popular guests will have their shoots split into 2 (one AM and one PM). If you have a low enough batch number you can choose which to attend. Even if you are stuck with a high batch number and are unable to choose (say you have batch 8 and they only call batches 1-4 in the morning you’d be forced to go to the PM shoot) then you can explain at the booth that you have an overlap with a paid talk and could you go in the AM shoot. The blue and red shirts will do all they can to help if you explain the overlaps to them.
  9. That's exactly what I was sent by my friend Rob but that makes my point. This is not in this forum, it is not on the website, the very website it lists at the bottom of the picture that you would assume has more information! I know it can take a while for websites to be updated but this top heavy dependency on facebook being the be all and end all for information is annoying. The facebook post directs you to the website which still many hours later has no mention of it.
  10. Any information on this? I have been sent a text by a friend that it is happening and they got it from Facebook. I am not a Facebook user and would appreciate it if the forums and even the event website were updated with announcements, at the very least, at the same time as Facebook is. It’s very frustrating!
  11. Hey it’s your opinion no one can tell you it’s wrong. If you think it’s worth a 10 then it’s worth a 10
  12. What I don’t get is how they are claiming this is the “World premier” when it will already have had a premier in LA on the 12th October and New York on the 14th.
  13. It is unlikely to be no but given how expensive the admiral pass is they may amend the package to include it. As I said above it is “out of hours” and not a part of the “official” convention as non-convention goers can attend this event by purchasing a ticket for this show only. In fact people who purchase a ticket for the show get a free day pass for the Saturday at the convention. Shatner’s World was not included in any package last time. It is basically just using the Enterprise stage in the convention hall. The rest of the hall will be empty and in darkness. It was a strange experience last time. It felt like being allowed in after everyone went home.
  14. Sorry I’ve been far too busy to get on here and share my thoughts. You’re really cracking through them. Even the audio only ones which I’m sure must be easier to find time for. You’re really handing out those 10/10’s. I’m not sure I agree with a lot of them. War Machines is tremendous and very atmospheric and I love the now historical feel of what was obviously contemporary at the time but I wouldn’t go 10/10. That whole “Doctor Who is required” nonsense still grates every time I hear it. 10th Planet also not quite worthy of a 10. Great base under siege but the Cyberman are not well thought out on their initial appearance and don’t really get going until the 2nd Doctors era. That said that is still my favourite Cyberman design. Totally agree about the Faceless ones. It’s another that I wish they would animate the remaining missing episodes of. It’s got a tremendous performance from Pauline Collins who was asked to stay on a companion but she turned it down. She also went on to play Queen Victoria in the 10th Doctor story Tooth and Claw. It’s also got Benadict Cumberbatch’s Mum in it. The use of the real Gatwick airport adds a realism too.
  15. Just be sure to get in quick. Even though this is hosted by DST, like the Shatner’s World Performance on the Saturday night in 2016, you do not need a ticket for the convention to attend so there will be quite a bit of interest from non-attendees too. It will be hugely popular and probably sell out.
  16. What a great lady. RIP. Met her a couple of years ago and she was radiant despite clearly being ill. Blake’s 7 is still one of the greatest shows ever. She had such an impact on my childhood.
  17. Nope. I too am rare in that I like the gun fighters but I have a version I made that removes the ballad from it. It is TERRIBLE and constantly distracts from the story and it’s hugely overused. It brings nothing to the story. Peter Purves’ awful singing is irritating too.
  18. You’ve been to cons and never met Sophie? You’re doing it wrong Seriously though she’s so lovely!
  19. Excellent. As it’s black I would recommend getting it signed in silver or gold sharpies which they should have at the desks. Personally on my posters I use silver for crew members and gold for captains. Just a suggestion.
  20. As Raylenth says it should be possible. Just be aware that if it’s the same Klingon bridge as last time it’s really small. It was literally just a platform with the captains chair on it and a backdrop. As you can see from my profile pic there was only just enough room for me, William Shatner and Christopher Lloyd. It might be a different one this year though.
  21. Further to the questions about whether talks are paid or not. Paid talks only happen on the Enterprise stage. This does not mean that every talk on the Enterprise stage is paid, just that the other 2 won’t have any paid talks. This is the only stage that is fully sectioned off and has no way to see the stage without being in the “arena.” The Voyager and Excelsior stages are smaller and just a partitioned off area in the hall.
  22. People look strangely at me (Ok stranger than they usually do) when I give this as the answer to which missing story would I like to see returned. It is just brilliant. Such a shame that even so few pictures from it exist but those that do show just how amazing it must have looked even for the 1960’s. Peter Purves really gets to shine in this one.
  23. Somebody did mention it in one of the threads sometime ago (it may even have been this one I couldn’t be bothered to check). It would indeed be a huge coup to get her and they’ll never have a better chance as she apparently is not a huge fan of flying and isn’t in the UK that often. <hunts for crossed fingers emoji>
  24. They are free. Any talk listed on the schedule that does not have the word PAID after it will be free.
