smcelhenny
Hello, for those who want to take part and get in the spirit of the world cup. I am doing a tournament called the World Cup of Horror. 20 different Movies from 20 different countries. The tournament is split into four different groups where films will face off against each other. The top two countries from each group after all the films in the group have faced off against each other will progress to the quarter finals where it will be knock out matches. How a match is decided is just by simply saying which of the two films facing each other you would like to see win and the film with most votes will get the points. For example if the Wicker Man was up against The Ring and four people voted for the Ring and three for the Wicker Man, The Ring would win the points. The groups are as follows Group A Scotland The Wicker Man Sweden Let the Right One In France Martyrs Thailand Shutter Canada The Gate Group B USA Halloween New Zealand Brain Dead aka Dead Alive Italy The Beyond Holland The Vanishing Ireland Grabbers Group C England Dracula (Hammer Studios version) Mexico The Devils Backbone Korea A Tale of Two Sisters Russia Night Watch Norway Cold Prey Group D Japan The Ring Spain Rec Australia Wolf Creek Germany Nosferatu Austria Funny Games

Matthewman
Ok here goes.... A The Wicker Man (Scotland) Vs Martyrs (France). - 2 films which I don't like to re-visit (which for a horror film is a good thing). After seeing Martyrs a few times now it doesn't quite have the effect it on me it did after the first time. The ending of the wicker-man however, will live with me for the rest of my days. Wicker man for me (and not just because i'm Scottish ) Let the Right One in (Sweden) Vs The Gate (Canada) - Easy one. I love The gate. B Halloween (USA) Vs The Beyond (Italy) - Another easy one. Halloween by a mile. Brain Dead (New Zealand) Vs Grabbers (Ireland) - Grabbers was an awesome film, but Brain dead is one of the best and wins for me. C Dracula (England) Vs A Tale of Two Sisters (Korea) - Not a huge fan of either, but two sisters for me. The Devils Backbone (Mexico) vs Cold Prey (Norway) - Another toughy, but Devils backbone edges it. D The Ring (Japan) Vs Wolf Creek (Australia) - The ring wins for me easy. As much as I love some Mick Taylor, I will never forget the night many years ago I stayed by myself in the dark to watch ringu on channel 4. Ring wins for me (pity about the american re-make ). Rec (Spain) Vs Funny Games (Austria) - Rec for me. Great movie with pretty good sequels too. Edited May 27, 2014 by Matthewman

smcelhenny
Okay here goes, completely unbiased and impartial. Group AWicker Man for me, Martyrs is a film that will always stick with me but Wicker Man is one I find new appreciation for whenever I see it. Let the Right One in for me on this one. I loved the Gate as a child but Let the Right One in appeals more to me now as an adult. Group B The Beyond edges it for me. Very creative and effective and though Halloween may be the original and best Slasher, The Beyond appeals to my personality more with its audacity and set pieces Brain Dead easily for me over Grabbers. I enjoyed Grabbers but it had nowhere the same impact and wow factor as when I first saw Brain Dead. Group C Ooh this is a really tough one and I'm really struggling to choose between Dracula and Two Sisters. I will go with Dracula for its influence on the Hammer studio and for British Horror The Devil's Backbone is a much easier choice for me. I enjoyed cold prey but for me The Devil's Backbone is such a beautiful and (no pun intended) Haunting film which works on so many levels Group D The Ring for me over Wolf Creek, if only for the wow factor it had for me when I first saw it in uni on vhs. Mick Taylor has potential to be an icon in horror but Ring genuinely creeped me out. Rec over Funny Games. I admire Funny Games in what it was trying to do but Rec entertains me much more Wow, it's harder to vote in these leagues than it is to administrate them.
