Dumb Question

The chevrons are the symbols on the gate.

Each location in the Stargate universe has its own unique "address", which is a combination of seven or more non-repeating symbols appearing on the dialing stargate.

Standard addresses have 7 chevrons, hence likely the name. (I wasn't involved with name finding, so this is a more or less edcuated guess.) An 8th chevron comes into play for the Atlantis spin off and a 9th for Universe.

If they wouldn't go with .1 steps we'd have left the gate addresses that make sense a long time ago.

Maybe my lack of knowledge of Stargate shows through with this question but why did:

(A) The first event started at Chevron 7 (why not 1 etc)?

Probably because at the time ME were not sure if there would be a second event. Retrospectively I always refer to it as 7.1 rather than 7

Standard addresses have 7 chevron, hence likely the name. (I wasn't involved with name finding, so this is a more or less edcuated guess.)
That is what I have always assumed as well.

Edsit: Thought - imagine if it was based on the number of symbols on the gate itself. It would have been Chevron 39.1

I've always wondered what would happen after Chevron 7.9 (assuming there are that many)?

  • Chevron 8?
  • Chevron 7.10? (Though technically that's the same as 7.1  )
