Smaug Posted May 6, 2006 Share Posted May 6, 2006 Cosplay (コスプレ kosupure), a contraction (or portmanteau) of the English words "costume" and "play", is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, and video games, and, less commonly, live action television shows, movies, or Japanese pop music bands. But in this case it's used as a term for creating costumes and 'playing' at being characters from a wide variety of media, not just Japanese culture.
