Well you can be the first to know that Cher is no more... Not the one you know, anyways... I'm at Uni now, so Conventions and Forum posting may become a lot more infrequent, if not... No more.

Well I'm afraid I'll be handing in my resignation from the squad, me bums too big for the skirt and Alex glares at me if he catches me posting, plus I won't be about for a while on the cons scene while I deal with stuff.

Still be on lj if anyone needs me, or the email thingy. Not msn much though, it annoys me.

Hugs to everyone.

Testing, testing, 123!!!

My C8 Review...

COLLECTORMANIA EIGHT

CollectorMania is an infamous event. It is renowned both within the industry and the fan community, as a Benchmark in a “whole new league†(to quote an attendee) from the rest.

Having attended many other events of its kind within the UK, in particular this year, I was expecting to be overwhelmed by this, and held many high hopes; perhaps too much so, as I found it to be only reasonable, if not mediocre.

I personally find that a Convention is a success based upon the Guests and the fans in attendance, as much as the amenities of the Dealers Stalls, Talks, and Party, etc.

However, CollectorMania is not, in my opinion, a Convention, but more of an open event, involving members of the public who would likely not be in attendance of a more private, entrance-fee event.

With this in mind, I realise that it is not the Guests that make CollectorMania the huge success that it is, but the attendees.

I am not being negative towards the Guests, however – those that I met were light hearted, friendly, and a pleasure to be with, the exception being William Shatner (a.k.a. Captain Kirk of the original series of Star Trek, and the first six film ventures), who, understandably, had complications, considering his Cult status.

On the subject of “The Shatner†(which many of his fans seem to fondly refer to him as), many attendees are negative and sour, of their experiences. They were, however, warned in advance that personalisations of autographs, and photographs of any kind, would be unlikely.

I don’t believe that he “spoilt the event†for me at all. He may not have spoken to me. He may not have shaken my hand. But he smiled at me, and many others. That is a memory that should, and will, be cherished.

There was, of course, a plentiful supply of fans at the event. I have been informed that there are usually many more in attendance, however. I find this hard to believe.

As a fan, and a collector of many things, I was overwhelmed with the centre of the event – the Dealer Stands. Extraordinary variety, indeed!

I found myself emerged in the vast selection of DVDs, Busts, Posters, Trading Cards, Autographs, Comics, Novelisations (and goodness knows what else), etc, and could honestly have spent thousands, given the chance.

Fortunately, I left my money back at the hotel, on all three days (for fear of bankruptcy!).

As a costumer, however, I was disappointed with the amount of fans attending in dress, and a majority of the attitudes towards those that were, including myself.

Considering the fact that the event was held in very public circumstances, I am not at all surprised.

I found the lack of appreciation and the negativity to be highly nerve wrecking, and off-putting, whereby I wore an overcoat for a majority of the time over the three days.

The Competition on the Sunday afternoon was a nice contribution to my experience, though, and definitely showed that the event organisers care about the fans, appreciate our efforts, and think of us seriously, unlike some past events that I have costumed to.

Considering, as well, how ‘unknown’ the character was that I decided to masquerade that day, the organisers were very kind, showing interest.

I did not win, but those that did were all very well deserving. There was even a last minute addiction with prizes for the younger Cosplayers, who certainly stole the show!

Aside from the fans in costume, there was also a special appearance from the UK Garrison, the largest costuming group within the UK, specialising in Star Wars based dress.

The Garrison are a fantastic group of very talented costumers, who really give an event that “extra edgeâ€. However, the organisers of CollectorMania obviously didn’t realise this, and placed the group away from the main Dealer Stands, and the Guests.

We were graced with their presence on both Saturday and Sunday, with the appearance of a very famous character in black, and quite a few Troopers, in contrast. There were also Prequel characters, with Padame’s Episode 2 Battle costume being very popular, indeed.

The Garrison had a Photo Stand, as they always do, which helps them to raise money for Charity. Having this so far from where many of the attendees will be, in my opinion, shows lack of consideration, and respect.

However, this did not deter any of the members, who were high-hearted, as always, walking around the Centre, spreading the word about the Stand.

Luckily, and very deservedly, the Garrison raised more than £700 for Children in Need. Good on you, guys!

Another infamous event, which seems to have developed its own reputation (be it negative, but a reputation, nonetheless) is the CollectorMania Party.

With a live performance from Buffy star Adam Busch’s band Common Rotation, there was bound to be a somewhat large turnout. However, once they finished performing, and the DJ began for the night, many left. This didn’t stop the rest of us from duelling in the ‘Wrestling Ring’ or the Bouncy Castle that were inflated outside. Other favourite activates included arm wrestling, and ‘Dance-offs’, which, admittedly, I may have been part of.

For an event that is supposedly poor quality, I quite enjoyed the evening, and was sad to see it end.

Aside from the music itself, which seemed, to say the least, somewhat varied, I do not have a single negative comment to make. This “variety†of music, however, did not seem to encourage dancing from the attendees at all, until the “classic geek tracks†were played, which was a definite site to see, considering how full the dance floor then was.

A very promising Party, which certainly finished too soon.

For an organiser with such a reputable name, I was honestly expecting much more from this CollectorMania.

However, as with any other event, there are many aspects, both positive and negative, as well as the fact that every attendee is different, whereby it is obvious that an event will never cater for every taste.

My taste was too “general†when placed into perspective. I would have doubtlessly enjoyed my visit more if I had spent more money, which seems quite peculiar, but it is unfortunately true. This is, after all, supposed to cause collector mania, and if in attendance at Nine, I will bring money, that is for sure!

CollectorMania is not a Convention - it is a show. An event made specifically for collectors, as its namesake states. There is, however, plenty of fun to be had outside of that box, made by the fans that attend.

Overall, it was a reasonable event with more highs than lows. I would recommend it to any fan of such gatherings – especially the avid collector, who will feel perfectly at home here.

Watch out, Milton Keynes - CollectorMania Nine promises to be bigger and better!
