  1. I've had to draw some reference pictures for a book-based cosplay that I'm considering doing in November. The costume is clear enough, the props are pictured... but there's no detailing on the face.

Would that count against me, or not?

Because I really can't draw faces.

I don't see why it should...It would be your face anyway, since it's your original design. Get some tracing paper and trace a picture of you on it

  2. hopefully i am going for at least one day, i'm considering one of the street fighter girls, the one with the meatballs and the chinese dress. i just have to drop a dress size to get in it (oi for post baby belly)

or if i can get my husband to go too we could do harry and ginny and the baby in a little robe too

but i've also got to make a pair of hose, a shirt, a padded jack, a womans hat for a wars of the roses reenactment event the weekend before, oh and a fallen angel costume for the fancy dress party

So you're not going to be too busy then! lol

  3. Just don't forget to split groups/individuals....

Cause otherwise it's almost ALWAYS a group that will win.

As wel, due to a cuteness facto, if you group "Kids" and "original", it's always a kid that's gonna win... so i suggest to make a special category for them

So usually i'd say you should have:

    GROUPS:

    TV/Film/Theater

    Anime/Manga/Game

    Original

    judges fav

    Audience fav

    INDIVIDUALS:

    TV/Film/Theater

    Anime/Manga/Game

    Original

    judges fav

    Audience fav

    KIDS

    TV/Film/Theater

    Anime/Manga/Game

    Origional

    judges fav

    Audience fav

Seems lenghty like it, but keep in mind you won't always have applicants for EACH category/subcategory....

That's what we do in the Belgian Cosplay Team contest and it works fab.

Also, at the BCT, we refuse all participants without a ref picture, and it's stated all over the place so no one can say they didn't know!

Our rule also state that if your costume won a prize, you can't apply with this specific costume anymore, unless huge changes have been done onto it.

But as long as you haven't win anything with it, you can enter several times...

    There ya go :)

I agree that you should have a seperate category for groups. I came second at CM Midlands as Jadis (Narnia), realiasticaly, I should have come first . The group entry that won at that particular show was great fun, but they didn't so much make their costumes as put them together whereas I handmade every part of my costume , including the wig. I'm not complaining, I'm merely relating what I was told by one of the judges afterwards, no disrespect to the people who won!. I'm only saying that single entry competing against a group will always have a disadvantage as the group entry will always have a massive visual impact.

With the categories, I would say that until we get above the thirty + entrants mark, we ought to keep it to a max of 4 + audience/judge favorites, or you run the risk of having one entrant in a single category...which defeats the idea of a competition.

    So

    1-Group

    2-Film, TV & Books (originals)

    3-Games Anime manga

    4-Kids/ under 15

Audience Fav ( remember this could be won by someone who wins one of the main cat! I've seen it happen before)

    Juges fav

I also strongly belive that, apart from the kids category, entrants should have made at least 60% of their costume.

  4. Thanks for the comments, I have now seen several of the photos on the photos page.

I met Claudia at LFCC and I was very suprised by the choice of pictures that you could have signed, it certanly changed my view of her. :P

Just watched the episode in season 3 where Capt Sheridon is having a vision, the one where Ivanova has a black raven on the sholder, Garaboldi has a stuffed pigeon on his sholder and he sees himself. I remember the first time I saw this episode and it was as cryptic as Lost. Sadly this time around it felt more like something out of a Monty python, pigeon, raven, could not take it serious.lol

Reading the posts above, from watching the outtakes of Bab5 which are awsome :D , the cast and crew had a great time. The scene of G'Kar and Londo in the lift, is hilirias..(I hear you....) will always make me laugh. :D

I still love this show, even now that technology has moved forward with FX.

  5. Sadly both Richard and Andreas are no longer with us.

B5 was a tremendous show and I preferred it to DS9. Claudia came to Manchester and both Mira and Pat Tallman have been to MK. Of course Walter Koenig has been too.

It was great to meet Bruce at the weekend. He was as really nice and said that the cast had all got on really well.

More guests from this great show would be fab

Totally agree. B5 is still great today

Still one of the best and most inovative Sci Fi series ever...it stands out even today . I only had a few hours to come to this one. I only came to meet him and left right after. A four hour round trip to see him for a few miniutes...and it was time well spent! I had to be at work for 3...was knackered all night, but had a good smile on my face for the whole of my 8 hour shift...lol!

Over the years, I have had the privilage to met Brad Dourif (great episode) Pat Tallman, Jason Carter(Marcus), Mira Furlan, Claudia Christian, Peter Jurasic, (who by the way is agreat guest! SM should really get him to a show, he's a blast! You should read the dedication I got...lol), Micheal O'hare and of course Bruce at the weekend.

More B5 guests would make me a very happy bunny

  6. Personally I think that having the "Guest days and prices" thread locked and stickied (as they have done this time) but leaving the individual guest threads unlocked works fine. I'd have guessed everything pertinent will be in the locked thread (with an additional unofficial backstop of TooTall's excellent FAQs). Sure stuff may crop up in the guest threads, but it would crop up in other threads instead if you locked the guest announcements.

The current arrangement (including the new development of locking and stickying the one "summary" thread of all the guest dates and prices, and keeping that updated) seems as good as it'll get to me.

I think that's all that he ever wanted... I think it works just fine!

  7. Yep, the guest days and other information need discussing as there'll always be questions on whatever is given .. and really, if SMs edit something they tend to put "updated on .." or something.

It's not very confusing really :P

Actually, I disagree. Other information, fair enough, but guest appearance days?I don't know what can be discussed there apart from, "I can't make that day...or great". I'd say a locked thread would be useful.

  8. Will there be any "celeb judges" for that one? Like we had for the "up close and personal" in Midlands?

Otherwise it's easy to ask them to sign the award..:)

    Juts a thought :)

probably not, if i do it one way it's a ballet box and photos, otherwise it'll be more like a cosplay fashion show...they walk on the run way holding a number and the crowd choose the winner.

i preffer the ballet box idea, i can take the stuff home and announce the winner online...also the show might not have time to do anything extra and if i do a ballet box running over the entire weekend it's not so much hassle.

pluse the attendies can see photos of everyone who's ever entered the competition...it's almost like a display board that you can vote on.

On the certificate thing, I was thinking more of a certificate for every category...The beauty of it is that you can get them prep'd earlier, you can re-use them if you don't have enough entrants. You get the resident judges to sign them and maybe get one of SM's regular guests to countersign ( if that's agreable)? You don't even have to give them out there and then, you could post them later or just add the names of the winners on the day. I personnally think it would enhance the experience...but then again I like bits of paper, so...I can try an design a mock up version if you want.

this would be like doing 2 seperate competitions i'm not putting it off i just don't want this to become another BIG thing, the cosplay main competition on stage is what i'm concentrating on and the this little bit on the side alread puts it's self in catagories 'stage and screen', 'anime, comic & cartoon' and 'Origional' 1 peice of paper posted off once the ballards have been counted with the necessary stuff, name, event, date, attendies choice for best in each catagory.

i only really get an hour for the show it self which is why i wanted to run this over the entire weekend by using the picture you supply and putting it on a pin board and you can collect your picture at the end of the day/s as i don't have the means to return them all.

untill i chat to showmasters this is all we are able to manage since the main show has kinks were stil ironing out and i don't want to add stuff just yet not on stage anyway.

i like the display area idea.

You misunderstand me...what I'm putting forward is the idea that you give out certificates to all the winners, as in all of the main cosplay event winners and one to the audience favourite. I'm not suggesting you make different categories for the audience vote...man that would be too much work...lol

  10.

    Why Thank you...lol

Bits of papers are cool!!! Maybe SM could stretch to providing a signed photo from one of the guests...or a SM gift voucher ( for a authograph at a collectormania event....)...Bits of paper a cool though!

Is that ironic? Humor carries bad online:)

I'm serious about that "Award " thing...

(I was for instance more happy with the printed award i got in LFCC for being "judge's favorite" costume than with the goodie bag..)

And for instance if it would be signed by one or two of the guests it would become even more "valuable" (seeing that you usually pay around 20£ for an autograph)...

But If you think it's a stupid idea, then forget it :)

No, what I said was : bits of paper are cool...and that's what I meant... I have a treasured bit of paper for signed by judges ( Gino Accevado of Weta and JuliaMcGee, cosplay expert) for my first costume. So bits of papers are cool...

  11. Thats actually a really good IDEA...i may put that into play, though i have no idea what the prize would be UNLESS it's just knowing you won.

    A kind of printed "award"?

Something that could be framed later?

    Why Thank you...lol

Hi Sparks. You guys did an excellent. I do have someone who would love to join you as tech crew if you are short. Its my brother (the singalur Sweeney on the Sat) he has loads of lighting desk experience and sound experinece.

I met your brother, somebody on the crew introduced me to him, please apologise to him I was in a bit of a rush and thinking of 5 things at the same time so I didn't get a chance to speak to him properly (probbaly just grunted hello to him as I rushed away :D )

We are looking at setting up a more formal tech team for showmasters in the near future, we are in the early stages at the moment and will be looking for volunteers at some point. If he's interested then I'll be more than happy to chat (preferably after the show...lol)

Do you have an e-mail he can send to? He'll be at C13 so hopefully he can chat then.

Cookie, I think the audience favorite is a good idea but occasionally difficult to determin.

A possible way to do that would be to ask cosplayers to provide a picture of them in costume, to have a display on the cosplay stand and ballot box...

  13. People! This is suposed to be a bit of fun! What the hell are you trying to do here?

I have been attending SM events since C3, and cosplaying since then. I am personally responsible, with Mich, for this cosplay section being on the board. It took months of campaining to get it there. It took months of further campaining to get a cosplay contest that wasn't a thrown thing 5 minutes before the end if they had time. Now we have something worthy and that's not good enough?

We all have different ideas about what the contest should be, and I for one don't agree with this "throwing all the toys out of the pram" solutions some of you are coming out with. If you can't enter as a group, you won't bring your costume to the show? Right...that's really gona help.

You won't enter without a group, why not? I've never entered with a group, it hasn't stopped me from winning before, and I've also entered when I had obscure costumes...for the hell of it! No the prize don't matter, it's nice to win it, it's also nice to just dress up...I did before we had comps to enter and I enjoyed it just as much!

LadyD, good luck with the show. I hope it works out great, I'll be there, in costume, whether I enter or not!

  14. Hey all... I left about 3.30 and I hit MAJOR traffic on the motorway... infact, every motorway I was on till home!! From the M6 to M40... traffic in general, accidents, SNOW!!!, darkness, rain... god it was tough, took 2 hours more than usual!! Anyone else get traffic?

I did as well, I got to the knutsford services and decided to park there rather than the motorway. We waited for about 45 minutes until the traffic started moving again...albeit slowly. it took a good two extra hours to get back to Brum...and it was snowing madly when I got there...lol.

  15. I'm suprised noone has voted the Order of the Phoenix film as the best yet!!!!!!!!!! :uhoh:

I have! I find it's the best paced of the movies, and the duel at the end is superbe.

Best book, Prisoner of Azkaban and favorite character, Snape...followed closely by Sirius Black.

  16. Really enjoyed book 7. The camping scenes were a bit long, but necessary to add to Harry's doubts about Dumbledore's degree of trust in him.

I didn't like the chat with Dumbledore at the end, it's my least favorite part of the story, although I understand the need for it, I felt it was too much about vindicating him. I sort of liked the sublte demystification of the character throughout the book.

I thought the way JK brought about Snape's "redemption" in Harry's eyes was masterful...He was the unsung hero, in constant peril from his enemy and dispised by the people he secretly swore to protect. Albus saying " sometimes I think we sort too soon" was a particularly poingnant moment for me. Snape was always my favorite character, for his complexity and ambiguity, and I long suspected that there was more to him after book 6, so I'm really happy about the way it turned out.

The deaths, well, I don't particularly think there was overkill, Harry's supporters were being badly beaten by Voldermort's and it was inevitable that some of Harry's inner circle would be amonst them, or he may never have found the strenght to go and meet his destiny. I think the death of Fred (from his suragate family), Tonks & Lupin (the last of his parent's friends and incidently thelast of the Maraudeurs) were essential to the plot.

The epilogue...well, I liked it because it showed a glimpse into the future they help create that day at Horwarts, echoing Lupin's thoughts in "the forest again". I think it was just enough information for me to see that Harry had finally found some deserved happiness, and it also left enough room for speculation, but for me it was really nice to see Harry talk about Snape with such respect and affection.

  17. Getting started on my Bellatrix costume when I get paid, hopefully!!!

That should be really cool, can't wait to see it :P

I started working on Sarah's dress from the ball scene in Labyrinth, but I'm sad to say the glitter and sparkly stuff got the better of me. After the scissors became violent, I changed my mind and hunted for something easier.

However, thirty lil minutes ago, I was browsing Ebay when I saw a second hand ball gown that'd be pretty much perfect. More expensive to be sure, but if it means no more glitter, I'd sell my soul... If I had one, that is!

So now I'm back to my original choice of Sarah, but I'm not sure if I could stand wandering around MK in something the size of a house :YAHOO:

Scorcy! Is that you!!! I didn't know if you did these events. Tis I the Sephy fan you met at another event in Glasgow. I'm also known as Sephirayne on other boards. Did you get my last e-mail?

You should carry on with Sarah's dress. I might try and get the Goblin King ready for the event if I have the time. Luckerly with using my own hair I have taken out one expense for the costume already. I might be able to change my original plan and do the Goblin King from the same scene. If I can find the right patterm for it.

I'm starting on the new leather clad Lucius this week for the 'Order of the Pheonix' group. Its going to be one hell of a costume as it consists of four layers of leather and suedette and dose include embroidary. Hopefully I can pull it off. New Lucius Costume below

    MalfoyOotPresize.jpg

Em, that looks like hard work! If anyone can pull that one off, it's got to be you hun! If you haven't work with leather before ( although I'm sure you have!) and you need advice, I'm on hand if you wish!

Good Luck and can't wait to see it :P

  18. Thanks for your comment but to be honest I put up this thread to give people a chance to voice their views about the stage set-up and additional events, rather than the internal running of the masquerade. But rest assured, I've been running cosplay events at professional shows for a long time and so have my team, so we know what we're doing!

Well, Orihime, since you didn't actually mention that you had any kind experience in this field, I had to assume that you didn't. My comments and suggestions were made with my own experiences of SM costume events in mind.

I think a catwalk is the best idea, that gives the best and most equal way for the costumes to be observed...I really don't think anyone should have to "sell" their costume in the hot seat in front of everyone.

The masquerade format will depend on the space available at each venue. We will certainly be including a catwalk at some of the shows. As for speaking in front of everyone, what we mean is for the host to ask each contestant a couple of questions about how they made the costume and what they like about the character. Their answers would not judged. We've found this to be a successful format at smaller events and many people said they enjoyed having the chance to tell people more about their costume.

I understand you want to make this work but please don't ask for people's ideas or opinions in order to rebuke them if you don't agree with them. It seems to me, reading your answers to my post, that you have pretty much decided what you're going to do and don't really need my opinion on the matter.

Please tell us about the cosplay events you have been running, so that we might gain a better knowledge of your backgroung?

  19. Has anyone else ordered it from Waterstones and got it for only £8.99 with a £3 deposit ? :YAHOO:

I'm not going to queue at midnight.. i'll pop down the following morning, the main rush seems to be over by then and any morons that may spoil the ending will have sloped off home by then.

I did that, at the Walsall branch! not sure about going at the midnight opening...I guess I'll go the next day as well, but I wouldn't mind having a look at the Q!

  20. Did no-one else notice the scene right near the end of the episode with the hand with scarlet nail varnish picking up a ring while maniacal laughter was heard?

That was the ring of Rassilon I mentioned before, it is supposed to bring its wearer immortality...and the hand may be that of The Rani...but who knows...

I know that the master was changed from a human back to a timelord, but way back (Tom Baker era) he had used all of his regenerations up and opted to body steal instead (I think he did this in the movie too). If the timelords brought him back then I suppose they could have started him from scratch with all of his regens restored?!

If memory serves, the Master got himself a new lease of life by stealing the power of Melkur in the Keeper of Traken, and I assume his ability to regenerate were also revived. Also I think he did say that the Time Lords brought him back to help them fight in the time war...so either way, regenation shouldn't be an issue
