Knowing Marc like I do... and coming from where he does.... I'd say he might enjoy some of the responses a little too much :s
Anyways... all this talk of translations is all well and good... but frankly I think you're all missing the vitally important stuff....
You can buy alcohol from virtually anywhere you can set eyes on
For example...
Liquor(sp?) stores...
Convienence stores (or as we might say... Newsagents)
Supermarkets
Some lowlife on the street (not recommended)
Pubs, Bars and Clubs
Typically... pubs and bars are the same thing... but if you wanted to get more specific... you could argue that pubs generally refer to community based bars... bars with comfortable seating, a welcoming atmosphere and lights A bar might be more associated with the hooliganism we have come to be famous for in the UK, or a typical town centre pub...
Some pubs are better than others... find the right one, and you'll have yourself a great night out... find the wrong one (more likely) you'll end up being a witness to some drunken brawl (especially at the weekends).
The weekends are probably the worst night's to go to a pub... as a tourist, you're more likely to visit a town bar... where you're more likely to get a surprise... I'd say avoid the bars that sell at cheap prices (typically between £1 and £2 is cheap)... this is where your crazy youngens will go to spend thier government earnings... though price is by no means an indication of how comfortable it will be, as many town pubs also sell at inflated prices... just because they can.
It would probably be best to use any hotel facilities available... you'll miss the unavoidable drunken frenzy at the end of the night when all the stupidly heavy drinkers (aka youngens) leave the bars and clubs and attempt to make thier way home... only to fail when they fall head first into the nearest curbside or bush.
So all that being said... we'll hire a train for the night and come on down to my pub... cos... it's the best
