  10. DC Comics convention marathon came through Los Angeles today and closed the evening with the DC Nation panel featuring Dan DiDio, Jimmy Palmiotti, Bill Willingham and DC’s Director of Sales Bob Wayne. Although DC had no booth presence at this year’s WizardWorld Los Angeles, Wayne and DiDio assured the crowd of their love for the City of Angels, and treated fans to a surprisingly jolly and free-flowing event that unlike some panels just flew by in no time at all. DiDio opened the panel with an explanation of DC’s official policy concerning complaints. “Everything you like comes from me. Everything you hate comes from Bob. That’s the official position.†DiDio then took the pulse of the crowd, asking a number of questions relating to controversial editorial decisions regarding fan-favorite characters. “Anybody still upset about Batgirl going bad? Any Ronnie Raymond fans?†After hands were raised, DiDio remarked, “Good, now we know not to call on those people.†DiDio later asked, “Anyone still upset about Blue Beetle dying?†To which virtually everybody in the audience raised their hand. “Oh, come on, guys!†pleaded DiDio. “Get over it! It’s been years now! We’re talking years! Do you read the new ‘Blue Beetle’ at least?†“No!†shouted one fan in the back. Jokes aside, DiDio and the panel were very interested in gauging the Los Angeles crowd’s reaction to “52,†the series which DiDio characterizes as a much bigger success than was ever predicted. After the crowd literally applauded “52’s†weekly format, DiDio explained how the series’ changed from its original plan very early on. “The original plan for ‘52’ was to do the missing year using a couple of characters as travel guides through the DCU, to see every other character and how they got to the One Year Later point. But as [Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka and Grant Morrison] wrote it, they became so involved in the characters; in John Henry Irons and René Montoya and Booster Gold… the stories became about them right away. The whole concept was flipped upside down. Going from the second issue on, I really wasn’t sure what was going to be in the next issue! As the writers would tell you, the characters start writing themselves and the stories start developing on their own.†The panel was then opened up for questions from fans, the first of which having to do with the controversial lateness of “All-Star Batman & Robin.†A particularly indignant reader characterized the “All-Star†situation as symptomatic of an influx of “hot shot prima donnas,†and that shipping the book late was indeed disrespectful to fans. Despite the plainly false sense of entitlement inherent in the fan’s particular question, DiDio agreed that as a publisher, DC must constantly work to earn the respect and loyalty of their readers, and went on to explain that Jim Lee made personal appearances at other conventions to apologize for the condition of the beleaguered title, and that future issues are already completed. Jimmy Palmiotti’s “Jonah Hex†series received much love from the LA crowd. Palmiotti revealed that while some DC Western characters such as Bat Lash will be making appearances in “Jonah Hex,†fans shouldn’t expect the title to turn into a “guest star book†of Western comics icons. "Justin (Gray) and I want it to always be about Jonah, and not the guest stars coming in,†said Palmiotti. Most of the DC Nation questions quite naturally pertained to “52†and “Countdown.†“’Countdown’ to what?†asked a fan. “Our old joke was ‘to “Civil War†#7’ but that’s over,†DiDio laughed. Bob Wayne then remarked, “So now we’re saying it’s to ‘All-Star Batman & Robin.’†Wayne also revealed that following the conclusion of “52,†artist J.G. Jones’ series covers will be collected, a an announcement that drew considerable applause from fans. Fans were elated to learn that many of “52’s†featured characters would be going on to new series and mini-series after the title concludes, including a new “Infinity, Inc.†series featuring a team led by John Henry Irons and written by “X-Statix†hero Peter Milligan. “52’s†team of Chinese superheroes the Great Ten will also return in their own title, as will Booster Gold. “I’m not saying [booster] survives ’52,’ cautioned DiDio over the crowd’s cheers. “But what if it were written by Geoff Johns, co-written by a new writer named Jeff Katz, and drawn by [booster Gold creator] Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund?†The crowd cheered once more. With news of Mark Waid and Bary Kitson’s departure from “Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes†already out, DiDio revealed that writer Tony Bedard would be handling the series for several issues before the new as yet unknown creative team took over. On a related note, DiDio mentioned that the mysteries surrounding Supergirl and her adventures in the future will be explained in DC’s upcoming “World War III†storyline. DC fans were happy to learn that “Justice League of America†writer Brad Meltzer would remain on the title until issue #12, and that “Justice Society of America’s†Geoff Johns and Alex Ross would remain with the book indefinitely. Readers of those books will have of course noticed that their storylines appear to be heading towards to inevitable yet wholly disparate futures. In the case of “JLoA,†the world of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns†seems to be looming in the distance, while “Kingdom Come†heavily informs Johns’ acclaimed “JSoA†series. “Yeah,†DiDio smirked. “Something’s going on.†Along similar lines, one fan asked, “What’s with the Bleed in ‘Ion?†referring to the appearance of the Bleed phenomenon appearing in a DCU book, where it has before existed only in WildStorm titles like “The Authority†and “Planetary.†"Read ‘Countdown,’†DiDio answered simply. “Thanks for saving ‘Manhunter’†exclaimed one fan, prompting DiDio to explain the history of the cult book. “We cancelled that book – twice. But Bob Wayne came to me and said it was doing alright in trade paperback sales and that we should keep it going. We have a very intense, loyal fanbase for that book, and you know what? It’s okay to do.†As DC Nation panels tend to do, Friday’s degenerated briefly into a back and forth screaming match between panelists and fans over the near genocide of characters from Keith Giffen’s “Justice League International,†such as Blue Beetle, Ralph & Sue Dibney and even G’nort. One fan proclaimed hilariously, “I don’t think you’ve killed enough of the Justice League International!†“Who’s even left?†DiDio laughed. “Batman!†the fan answered. DiDio did not laugh.
  11. Top Cow Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Filip Sablik, was joined by artists Tyler Kirkham and newcomer Mike Brussard along with Vice President - Editorial Rob Levin on Friday afternoon at Wizard World: Los Angeles to give convention-goers an overview of the company’s upcoming projects. Sablik began the panel with a trailer from the forthcoming "Darkness" video game. The trailer features "Darkness'" main character Jackie Estacado as he shoots up a warehouse of mafia thugs. Once they have the advantage, Jackie shoots out the lights and calls upon dark forces to finish the job. “Obviously the video game is for the kids,†said Levin, joking about the violent and bloody content. “It’s fairly brutal. In the game it is going to be a first person shooter. You’ll be walking around as Jackie and when the lights go out you’ll be able to summon Darklings.†Sablik said the game would be available in June from Starbreeze and 2K Games on the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms. It will also include a multi-player mode, which will allow such benefits as being able to play a Darkling, which cannot be done in the regular game. Assuaging any ideas that the game is nothing but shoot and kill Levin told attendees “Paul Jenkins is the writer of the game. He’s keeping close in feel and spirit to the comic so you’ve actually got a character-driven story. Top Cow’s President Matt Hawkins and artist Mark Silvestri are also heavily involved in the game’s development.†A demo version is available at the Top Cow booth during the show. Tying into the game are the Darkness Level books. “Paul Jenkins co-wrote these books with David Wohl, creator of The Darkness,†said Levin. “Each issue follows a level of the game and is drawn by a different artist.†Panelist Tyler Kirkham, specifically, draws the Level Two book. “The levels go back and forth between earth and a Darkness world,†he said. Sablik added, “Each issue is self-contained. If you’re a fan of Tyler’s you can just pick up the Level Two book and enjoy it. Sablik also mentioned that there has been some consideration of a PC platform game for the Top Cow property “Hunter Killer.†Sablik called 2007 as the year of the Witchblade and the Darkness. We have a new Darkness ongoing that will be launched in the fall. Phil Hester will be writing. Look for an interview with Hester and Levin on CBR in the coming days. In discussing Witchblade, Sablik said, “We’ve teamed up with FUNimation, Bandai, Studio Gonzo and several other partners to create the “Witchblade Anime†and a Witchblade manga. These are not some elseworlds what-if versions. This is canon Witchblade.†Sablik continued “Witchblade is the focus of one of our main pushes for the summer. For about two years now we’ve had writer Ron Marz working on the title. He’s taken it in a phenomenal direction. I like to think of it as ‘Homicide’ meets the ‘X-Files.’†The events of the series sees perennial Witchblade host Sara Pezzini passing on the power to a new character, Danielle Baptiste while Sara is pregnant. Sara will not be leaving the series as a result of these goings on, but it will lead into a new mini-series, “First Born.†Ron Marz will be writing “First Born†with art by Stjepan Sejic, a digital painter who worked on the Darkness video game as part of Starbreeze. “We want to energize the Top Cow universe without making the fans commit to a huge amount of books. It's three-issues and self contained,†said Sablik Sablik then announced the Top Cow/Marvel crossover “Unholy Union†which will be drawn by newcomer Brussard. “It will be a 40 page one-shot that will also lead into “First Born†and give a hint of things to come,†said Sablik. Brussard added “Not only will I get to introduce Sara having her first born, I’ll be getting to drawn some Marvel characters I’ve never drawn before.†Ron Marz is writing it and it will feature such Marvel characters as Doctor Strange and Ghost Rider. Sablik moved on, though with some technical difficulty, to show a trailer for an upcoming project from Paul Dini. “We’re launching a new character called Madame Mirage with Paul Dini,†said Sablik. “This is an original character he created in conjunction with [Top Cow]. Paul has crafted a really phenomenal mystery/espionage/intrigue/revenge tale. The first story arc, which is six-issues with artist Kenneth Rocquefort, will answer the question of who is Madame Mirage, where did she come from and what are her powers. “Madame Mirage is scheduled to launch this spring. Sablik closed by tantalizing attendees with many images from the production of The Darkness video game and an image from an upcoming venture with Dynamite Entertainment featuring art by Silvestri. Fans can expect more detailed announcements about this project later in the convention season.
  12. At Wizard World LA, Aspen began its panel somewhat later than expected, as the company's Peter Steigerwald showed up to set up an iBook for the company's AV presentation and offered to have a message board poster named Simon dance for the assembled crowd in order to kill time. Simon -- a six foot tall lanky gentleman with short blond hair and glasses -- protested, "I'm from Sweden, I don't have any rhythm!" Steigerwald was nonplussed. "Any Germans who would like to attack his country to motivate him to dance?" Simon said something difficult to decipher and Steigerwald replied, "Just because no one wants to go to your country doesn't make it entertaining." The fan gave in and walked in front of the projector screen, proceeding to start with possibly the worst Cabbage Patch ever. "I'm charging for signatures by the way," he offered as he switched into a strange kicking movement. Steigerwald was not impressed, and Simon protested further, "I'm Swedish! We don't know how to dance! Have you seen ABBA? You call that dancing? Ace of Base, did they dance? Roxette?" Despite an attempt to get the crowd to clap a beat for the poor Swede, it was silence in the room by 4:37 while Steigerwald continued to hook up cables. He then tried to get Aspen message board posters to introduce themselves, the only ones willing to do so, including a board moderator, seated on the front row. Steigerwald was displeased with this, asking, "What are you guys, Marvel fans?" He then indulged Simon in a game of twenty questions, letting the crowd jump in as well. Getting to sixteen questions was an overwhelming struggle for some reason, and Steigerwald continued to berate the crowd. "Come on, it's not like you guys are social outcasts who hang out at home!" he said. The Aspen staffers started to file in a little after 4:45 PM -- pencil artist Micah Gunnell, inker Don Ho, writer Frank Mastromauro, studio head Michael Turner, colorist Beth Sotello ("who's very embarrassed to be here," Steigerwald pointed out), inker Jason Gorder, writer JT Krul and editor Vince Hernandez. Holding up a cast, Hernandez said, "I have a broken wrist, because I fell down a hill." "He tried to pull out of it, but the hill fought back," Steigerwald commented. "I'm not answering any questions about my wrist," Hernandez warned before muttering, "No provocation ..." "We're not gonna say who's at the top of the hill," Steigerwald said, glancing over at Mastromauro. "He was like 'dude, stop falling!'" "He did say that," Hernandez agreed. "Enough of that tomfoolery," Steigerwald said, before getting Hernandez to recreate his Wondercon version of the company's panel opening "Aloha!" The panelists each introduced themselves before Michael Turner gave an update on his health. "I've been on chemo for last three months, and it's working. I'm having no pain. I was on twelve pain killers a day now I'm down to zero. I'm gonna continue to do every cover he hands me to do. I'm feeling good, I'm gaining weight back, and I'm feeling great. Thanks for all the support and thanks for waiting." The show was turned over to Mastromauro, who talked about upcoming events and the slides shown. The company plans to return to the "Soulfire" series, showing a cover for issue eight featuring a battered winged man in dreamy illumination. A print of that image, Mastromauro announced, was available at the Aspen booth. They also announced a new series called "Soulfire: New World Order" written by Krul, which will debut in May. The iPhoto slide show was vexing Mastromauro, and Krul said, "if you go on YouTube, you can see the Wondercon panel, it went great!" Krul went on to describe the project as "a darker story ... jam packed wit its own crazy characters. It predominantly takes place in San Francisco ... magic is coming back and people are struggling to find their place in this new world." "Shrugged" was next, with the cover to issue five showing a visual theme similar to the classic James Bond poster from "For Your Eyes Only." A convention exclusive variant showed a colorful butterfly-themed girl posed amidst a field of color. Issue six's cover had the main character's hand encased in flames a la Johnny Storm, issue seven's cover showed a number of bodies on the floor while a menacing figure looms over them, and issue eight ("which will be oversized") had an entire city and all the title's characters bursting from the head of the protagonist. Late this year, Aspen promises a new Fathom series, but at WWLA they were premiering "Fathom: Kiani," which features an alternate cover by Talent Caldwell and an incentive cover by Michael Turner. Turner and Steigerwald had a WWLA exclusive cover as well, VIPs received an exclusive variant, and a UK exclusive with the British flag in the form of a bra was shown. "A limited amount will be available on our website," Mastromauro said. Randy Green did an alternate cover for issue two, Ande Park on issue three, with Micah Gunnell on an alternate for issue four. "Fathom: Killian's Vessel" is slated for late summer, a "dark love story" written by Vince Hernandez. Many "classic" and swimsuit images are being re-introduced as prints due to fan demand. This summer's Free Comic Book Day will feature a new "Worlds of Aspen" sampler with snippets from "Fathom: Kiani," "Soulfire: New World Order," "Shrugged" and "Soulfire." Aspen busts (the character Aspen, Kiana, Cannon and a black armor variant of Aspen) shipped last week, according to Diamond Distributors, "and should be sold out by Monday," said Mastromauro. Their long-awaited Kiani statue was delayed by many things, including Chinese New Year, but as Steigerwald said, "By 2008, you'll have it." The "Ekos" project got just a logo on a slide and Mastromauro's comment, "Coming ... soon." They then delved into work for the big two, showing Turner's "Justice League of America" cover with Amazo as Red Tornado, then showed the cover for this month's issue seven, featuring Wonder Woman, a teaser cover for issue nine that had Red Arrow, Hawkman and a character hidden for contractual reasons. They then showed a cover showing Power Girl and Black Canary that's generated seventeen pages of commentary on a comics message board, characterized by Mastromauro as "a good read if you want a laugh." Switching to Marvel, the "Civil War" #7 alternate cover was shown, as was an alternate for "Black Panther" #25. Turner will be doing a run of "Fantastic Four" covers, showing some that had the Silver Surfer facing off with the Black Panther. A cover for "Hulk" was shown, as well as the first of a series of covers for a new "Namor" series. The "Ultimate Wolverine" cover image drew gasps, showing Logan's claws slicing through a field of red. The discussion turned to "Heroes" webisodes done weekly by the company, Questions included asking why the relentlessly taciturn Sotello was embarrassed to be there ("because she's so much better than everyone else on this panel," Steigerwald offered, and she simply shrank and waved and had little to say on almost any subject), how the "Heroes" project came to be (Mastromauro is friends with "Heroes" producer Jeph Loeb, who's also working with Turner on "Ultimate Wolverine," and Aspen is contracted for three seasons worth of webisodes), that trade paperbacks are planned "one per quarter" which will reprint some of the material from the Top Cow era, starting with "Soulfire: Dying In The Light" and an "Absolute Fathom" hardcover, which had some legal snafus along the way. "The 'Fathom' movie is now not really happening," Turner announced. "We had some problems with some scripting, we had some name issues with the 'Surface' thing ... It was definitely an experience that we had with Hollywood. All the scripts were completely different from what you know of 'Fathom.' We're going back and starting again." The first script, apparently, had no powers or ships, just a character named Aspen, and "they kept trying to fix it," Turner said. Mastromauro added, "We're set up at a whole new agency, with a whole new set of eyes." "Shrugged" was also mentioned as an element in these movie-related talks. As with discussions of animation and video games, where talks are happening but nothing concrete is in existence, Turner said, "Do something big or don't do it at all." By 5:17, Steigerwald was struggling to get questions for the panel. "what's my fourth favorite cheese? Vince," he quipped. Steigerwald asked each panelist about who their favorite character was, and only Turner and Steigerwald even mentioned Aspen characters (Batman, Wolverine, Spider-Man and even Danger Girl and Warbuck got mentions). Hernandez said his favorite was, "Doomsday, because he stands for everything that's right in the world." He continued, "I have the only piece of artwork where he's killing a kid and he's holding a kitty." Hernandez was asked what it's like to write a female lead, and he said, "I'm doing the best I can, because I don't know anything about how women think." "Are you single?"Steigerwald wondered. "... yes," Hernandez replied sheepishly. Apparently, Mastromauro reads back Hernandez' scripts in the office, and Steigerwald said, "It is the most annoying thing in the world to hear Frank reading back his scripts." "With funny little voices," Hernandez complained. The panel ended with another hearty "Aloha" (after some quipping about how Hawaiian is too simple a language, with a word that means so much) and fans filed out to get one of 150 numbered prints of the Turner/Steigerwald alternate cover to "Shrugged" #5.
