So just got home from attending my first ComicCon with a couple of mates. First of all, loved it. Already thinking about going next year but a couple of things struck me. The first day when we arrived at about 10am. AWFUL planning. We had no idea where to go, what to do. queues snaking around every building with barely a blue or red shirt (not sure what the offical SM people are called) in sight. We eventually managed to find the right queue for early-bird tickets after speaking to more confused people and when we finally got into the building. Wow.
We felt herded into these tiny pathways between stalls in the stifling heat. I appreciate SM do not actually control the weather but some kind of fan or air con? Obviously the main attraction being Stan Lee it was very poorly handled where he was, how we could see him etc. Just everything was not very good for a newcomer. I got the feeling a lot of the people there were regulars which was fine but we're seeing lists here there and everywhere, queues coming out of ears. People signing and handing out money and we were kind of just left to get on with things.
Maybe a few SM staff wandering about pointing people in the right direction handing out advice, which may be second nature to a lot of the people attending but for complete novices to this whole thing it was pretty daunting wouldn't go a miss? We spent the majority of the first day just getting our bearings.
Overall too many queues with too many people not knowing why they're queuing. If I could change one thing it would be to have more SM staff just walking up and down queues stating what the queue is for and if people were in the wrong queue where to go, just a handy right if you're looking for a so and so you wanna be over there for a certain time?
BUT like I said, loved it and definitely thinking about next year!
