I've been reading a lot of differing views on here this past day, but as I stand here in the queue to get in on the last day of DSTL, I thought that I would put down some thoughts.
DSTL is not my first con, admittedly my only other con was in 1999 in Manchester, so very long ago, so I have nothing to really compare this to.
Firstly the organisation- okay, so some areas were chaotic (tickets for stage B talks, entrance to photo area A) however given that this is the first event of it's type in the UK, I think we can allow some form of learning curve.
I mainly came to meet some people of whom I have a great respect for and I can truly say that they met all of my expectations. All the guests were polite and friendly, happy to say a few words when they had the chance, and seemed genuinely pleased to meet the fans. Any extras I could get to were a bonus.
The talks on stage C were interesting and humorous with great crowd interaction (Ron Moore and Ira Steven Behr were great as were the SFX crew)
The DS9 debate was interesting, however the audience weren't able to put forward their view much more than a few words about their favourite episode, however the trio presenting did a good job of keeping it going and knew their stuff.
Merchandise stands were few, however I can understand that being so if the only thing they are allowed to sell is Star Trek merchandise (star trek being only one small part of a lot of retailers stock) however there would not have been much more room for extra merchandise. Forbidden Planet had quite a good selection of books
and non figure items on display.
The fans have been amazing all week with some incredible costumes (several Qs, 7 of 9s and Borg, Orion slave girls and Leeta & Rom spring to mind) and it is somewhat humbling to realise that people from all countries and backgrounds have been brought together by a love of Star Trek.
Finally the crew. It is worth remembering that they are volunteering their weekend to help out- many, if not all, are Star Trek fans who are trying to make this event work The crew I have spoken to have all been courteous and friendly and eager to help. So I would like to say a big thank you to all the crew at the event.
I have enjoyed myself this past weekend, and hopefully some good planing will allow me to finish off today successfully (I.e. getting into stage B at some point).
Thanks for reading this rather long stream of conscience there's not much else to do when standing in the queue!
