  1. I'm curious about something, but I don't want to sound like i'm being rude.

Why have a guest come just for the screening? Surely if they're coming for that they may as well do a few hours of signing during the day as well?

As I said, i'm just generally curious to the reasoning behind it, obviously it adds more excitement to the screening, but surely could leave many people disappointed that the guest isn't doing autos/photos?

iThere is a reasonable chance that it is quite likely the guest is only available at a specific time and therefore can do the screening. That being the case would you rather have them for that limited amount of time or not at all...?
  2. If there is a sign saying no photos then you should respect it and not ask. It is there for a reason, which is not always made apparent to attendees.

If you had not asked then the awkwardness that followed would not have happened.

  3. Out of curiosity, I would like to know what the small difference is between a signing event and a convention? Is it the lack of Q&A's, because I find most other things represented on Collectormania are also on the London Film & Comic Conventions (dealers, photoshoots, ...)

With regards to SM/ME events the ME conventions are focussed on one show, in most cases, unlike the SM events. They have a much smaller number of attendees (up to 1000) and guests (normally 4-6). They are designed to be a three day event. The activities and pricing structure (higher, with no one day entries) reflects this. Only a handful of dealers are present.

  4. Where possible yes. However some guests may have signs up saying 'no posed photos' or 'no photos'. No photos are permitted with the latter. The former allows candid only photos. Please do not ask the guest to pose.

There may be signs saying 'no videoing' as well the same applies. If there are no signs then it is polite to ask first, especially if videoing.

  5. but if they're not busy with autographs or photoshoots and are just sitting at the desk, then I do believe by all means, go up and say hi and then engage in a small conversation with said guest.

and the show rule is that you seek permission from the crew member with the guest (or the first crew member if there is a separate payment desk) before speaking to the guest ;)
