The sun slipped behind the horizon at the end of another day.

A figure stood looking up at a large building, a non-descript industrial building. It would have been grey but the setting sun cast an eerie yellow light about it. The air around it was still and every sound was distant. A second figure walked up slowly to the first and stood silently for a while.

“Do you ever go home?“ The female voice asked softly.

“Did you know the average cost of Nevada marriage license is $35, but the average cost of filing for divorce in Nevada is $450.†The figure said after a moment. His voice quiet also as if the atmosphere around them compelled them to whisper.

“Figures, easy in, hard out. The way the lawyers make their money.†She shifted on her feet and switched on her flash light. The peace of the scene shattered by the thick coarse beam of light.

“Shame.â€

“What is?â€

“It’s always about money in this town.†The man also turned his light on..

“Gil, everywhere is about money. If you haven’t got it, you get it.â€

The two figures stepped into the building, the lights instantly picking up the scene. The silent flutter of paper could be heard in the hollow silence as the beams broke through the darkness. Every now and again a pale piece of paper would flutter down from the ceiling through their line of vision and settle on the floor. Gil held up his hand to prevent the female from walking any further.

“Sara, be careful, try not to step on anything.†He didn’t see her roll her eyes but she still smiled affectionately after him.

The two split apart and walked around the edge of the room, looking at the floor mainly. To both of them it became clear what and where the source of the scene was.

A large dark smudge lay on the floor, there was no destruction until a metre out from that point and the back wall was a large dent. Gil crouched and picked up the paper on the floor, holding it between his thumb and forefinger. A hundred dollar bill shone back in the torch light, on it were small red smudges.

“Err, Gil.†Sara called. “You should look at this.â€

He approached her and followed her line of sight. Some one’s lower arms lay on the floor behind the black smudge, in the hands were two handles, from what appeared to have been a case of some sort.

Gil shrugged indifferently, holding up the bank note he turned to Sara. “Money troubles.†He said and he went back to his kit.
