Smaug
Title: Crossing The Line Rating: PG Authors Note: This hasn't happened. Based on something that could have happened in Gil Grissom's past and the fact that it still haunts him today. Step back and let some one else take the reins. It’s not a matter of wanting to have nothing to do with it. It’s a matter of having to make that move. Gil’s hand slipped over the slightly shiny and worn surface of an old file. He’s spent about 2 hours searching for it. Word had reached him about something. Something that years ago he had made a choice about and surprisingly, for Gil, it was a wrong one. He’d kept the file, not out of any obsession, or so he thought. He’d probably gone against every rule in the book just to keep these few pieces of paper and couple of photos. It was one of his first high profile cases as a CSI. Nothing out of the ordinary, apparently as straight forward as they come. Until Gil made it personal. He still cursed himself for it, even today. Leaning back in his chair, the leather creaking it’s protest against the shift in weight, Gil sighed. The piece of news reached him too late but really what could he do. He chuckled dryly. Even today he still wanted to keep that- person behind bars. Bile rose in his throat as he opened the file, two fingers smoothing the worn crease down as he sat up straight again. Pushing the photos about his desk slowly, methodically. Examining each one of them. Looking over the small body, it’s image fading, failing to hold onto the paper. Gil frowned at the irony, the memory of that small child fading with the photo. Almost 15 years ago, he was doing the very same thing. In a layout room. Her clothes pinned to the board. Photos strewn about the table as Gil and another CSI worked over them. Over the case of the child killer. Over the days Gil had taken that step from being passionate to being obsessed to taking it personally, and with that step he’d made a mistake. He didn’t let the evidence speak, he spoke for the evidence. He’d seen what only he wanted to. Today he was sat at his desk, with the file as he waited. Waited to see if he could get up and leave his office. Could Gil walk out into the Vegas air and get into a Denali and meet the one man, the only mistake he had ever made, walk out of prison? For the first time, Gil didn’t have an answer, and if he did? It would probably be wrong.
