Somebody asked a similar question before, this was Roy's answer then:

"A paint pen maybe?  Posca are generally quite good, but I'd suggest testing it as well if you can."

The surface would probably make a difference. Is your helmet smooth, or is it rough, like it's been worn down by years of abuse? As Roy said, a paint pen is probs your best bet, and you should test it somewhere that it won't be seen. You could try a pen on the underside of your helmet, leave it a while to dry, then give your helmet a good rub to see if it comes off.
