Chris Claremont will be appearing both days.

DURING a career that stretches back to 1969, Chris Claremont has generated a raft of new characters, among them Captain Britain, Marada the She-Wolf and the Black Dragon. He has made major contributions to such titles as Iron Fist, Marvel Team-Up, Spider-Woman, Ms Marvel and Fantastic Four and, while his credits are extremely Marvel-centric, he has also worked for DC (Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom the Gods Destroy) and Dark Horse (Aliens vs Predator).

For the House of Ideas he also (co)created Sabretooth, Mystique, Deathbird and Rogue, who have gone on to become integral elements of Marvel’s mutant mythos and it is for his numerous and influential contributions to Uncanny X-Men, New Mutants, Excalibur, Wolverine and the many other interconnected comics that chronicle events in that corner of the Marvel Universe inhabited by the X-Men et al that he is rightly lauded.

Often referred to as the X-meister, Claremont has been crucial to the success of Marvel’s mutants, building them across more than two decades into the comic industry’s top-selling franchise. Initially in conjunction with artist Dave Cockrum and then with John Byrne, the writer crafted believable characters, placed them in unbelievable situations and tempted ever-increasing numbers of readers into caring about them and addicted to following their adventures. The list of characters he, Cockrum, Byrne and subsequent artists introduced through the pages of Marvel’s X-titles is legion – it includes Gambit, the Hellfire Club, the Starjammers, Arcade, the Brood, Karma, the Imperial Guard, Kitty Pryde, Psylocke, Wolfsbane, and Mister Sinister to name but a few.

While occasionally castigated for unresolved subplots, the writer draws constant praise for his long-term approach to his carefully plotted narratives and for his realistic dialogue. A veritable fount of ideas, not for nothing is Claremont acknowledged as a comicbook industry legend.
