'Cold Fish'

'Cold Fish', a new serial killer thriller written and directed by Sion Sono ('Love Exposure'). based in parts on a true story, the film stars Mitsuru Fukikoshi as a tropical fish seller who is forced to get involved in a string of brutal murders when a deranged couple kidnap his daughter.

Synopsis

Shamoto runs a small tropical fish shop and leads a boring, but stable life. His second wife, Taeko, does not get along with his daughter, Mitsuko, and this worries him. He also feels somehow unfulfilled and dissatisfied with what his life has become.

One day Mitsuko is caught shoplifting at a department store. There they meet a friendly man named Murata, who helps to settle things between Mitsuko and the store manager. Since Murata also runs a tropical fish shop, Shamoto establishes a bond with him and they become friends; Mitsuko even begins working for Murata and living at his house, to avoid conflicts with her stepmother.

What Shamoto doesn't know, however, is that Murata hides many dark secrets behind his friendly face. He sells cheap fish to his customers for high prices with his artful lies. If anyone detects his fraud or refuses to go along with his money-making schemes, they're murdered and their bodies disposed of by Murata and his wife in grisly ways. Shamoto is slowly taken in by Murata's tactics, and by the time he realizes that Murata is insane, and a serial killer who has made over fifty people disappear, he is powerless to do anything about it. But now Mitsuko is a hostage at Murata's home, and Shamoto himself has become the killer's unwilling accomplice!

Meanwhile, the murders, without any trace of the bodies, continue unabated. The police have long suspected Murata and try to get information about him from Shamoto; Murata quickly senses the danger and threatens Shamoto not to report anything to the police.

In the end, the conflict between Shamoto and Murata will result in murder, insanity, and an ordinary man being driven to the edge of the abyss.

topic i have also added in the anime/manga section

not about a japanese movie as such, but more about possible upcoming Hollywood remake

"reports are out that Warner Bros. have hired 'Lethal Weapon' creator Shane Black to write and direct their upcoming live-action remake of 'Death Note'.

Black is apparently a big fan of the original manga and hopes to remain faithful to the source while also giving it a new Americanised spin. :(

I see this as more proof that Hollywood have run out of original ideas with the endless sequals and having to remake films from japan, korea, Spain etc etc where that the original movie had not too long ago been released (see REC, the ring, Grudge, pulse, one missed call etc etc etc)

only time (and box office) will tell if this will be a faithfully and worthwhile remake"

'Chocolate 2'

just read:

'Ong Bak' studio Sahamongkol have revealed that they are moving ahead with 'Chocolate 2'. Details on the project are scarce at present, but leading lady Jeeja Yanin and director Prachya Pinkaew are both expected to return. Oh, and if anybody cares it is also going to be shot in 3D.

Considering Pinkaew's busy slate, which includes his English language debut 'White Elephant' and tae kwon do film 'The Kick', it could be a while before we see 'Chocolate 2'. Still, if it is as enjoyable as the first then it should be worth the wait.

if you have not seen the first Chocolate movie - do, it is a great martial arts flick with character :WINCE:

just watched the teaser trailer for 'Blind', a new Korean thriller from director Ahn Sang-hoon ('Arang'). The film stars Kim Ha Neul ('My Girlfriend Is A Secret Agent') as a blind woman who, after being the only witness to a bloody murder, becomes the target of a vicious killer.

Synopsis

One rainy night, a young blind woman named Soo-ah waits for a taxi on the streets. Just as when the taxi driver seems a bit too nice to her, the car bumps into something big. When Soo-ah comes back to herself, she senses the driver dragging and loading something in the trunk. He says it’s a dog but she knows that he’s keeping something from her. Later, she reports this to the police but they ignore her. The next day, the police visit her about a missing college girl and ask her to testify. Despite the worries of the police, she gives them a series of information that are more reliable than coming from an actual eye witness. As in fact, she was in police academy when she had lost her sight.

As the investigation moves forward, another eye witness, a teenage runaway Gi-sub steps in. He begins to fill in the missing pieces of the crime puzzle. Forming an odd friendship, the two witnesses help the police in finding the suspect until the suspect realizes that they are close on his trail. The serial killer, a master criminal who had been sure that he left no evidence behind, is now on a hunt to get rid of the witnesses. When the killer comes looking for Soo-ah, she calls Gi-sub on her mobile and with his help over the videophone she escapes from the killer’s attack. The killer tracks her down and she realizes that in order to save Gi-sub she would have to risk her own life. She faces the killer herself with only her acute senses to rely on.''
