Havok
If it's proving a problem having a signing event in Manchester then why not have a convention of some sort. New ones are being announced seemingly on a monthly basis, so why not have one in Manchester. I'd be up for a convention on the following themes (in no particular order): Dexter Buffy / Angel Chuck Firefly Lost The list isn't exhaustive..... What do you guys think? I think given the amount of folk at the movie fair we have in Manchester every couple of months who pretty much buy just pricey import horror dvds and the continuing sucess of the long running horror film fest we have in the city annualy i think a horror show would work better than 3 no longer with us tv shows and another that many have tuned out of. Whilst James Marsters is always popular Anya and Tony Head didnt have huge ques in Manchester and i may sound like Indio but i was there both days and saw it so a Buffy con is out plus theres that Hallowhedon con for that.Lost has had to extend to an Abrahms gig and thats only got one guest as fantastic as he is and its not far off so i dont get that request either.Chuck...how many people watch that?.Firelfly - too late. Dexter - too expensive to fly them anyone over i keep hearing. There are a lot of horror fans in Manchester and in the UK. If we had a show with horror guests resident in the UK itd be cheaper and a success. It has a wider fan base than a single tv show as it covers writers, movies, artists. I just dont get it and it tires me to repeat it as im sure it tires many who have had to read me banging on about it again. Were not getting any representation for a genre which could include 100s of potential guests whilst tv shows that are not holding onto the initial fanbase are getting whole cons devoted to it with 2 or 3 guests they have to fly over for plenty $$$. Despite the success of Star Trek and the continued brilliance of LOST the Abrahms show i think is a risk as much as the Heroes show was so why not risk a Horror show? sazzra
Yeah, it could be held at the Jarvis in Piccadilly Gardens The thing is, why fix what isn't broken? The conventions have been working well out of the Park Inns and latterly the Hilton, why move them?
Doctor Who
Hmm, I think it's a good idea but wouldn't it be limiting the amount of visitors to dedicate it to a certain genre? Wouldn't it be better to have a mixed convention like usual but then get guests from fan bases that are known to be popular? If we had to go for a themed convention, my pick would definitely be a Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures one. Manchester would do well with a WHO convention but theres way too many of them already. Theres nothing limiting about a horror con,the genre has huge scope and is forever bringing out new stuff..were not talking a bunch of cancelled, soon to be cancelled or done and dusted tv shows were talking 1000s of movies,100s of novelists and plenty tv.Its been around over a 100 years im sure there are plenty actors out there who have been in classic horror movies with packed cvs featuring work that people who dont like horror may be a fan of. The mixed cons featuring tv and movies obv didnt work in Manchester no matter if they had people from shows that were popular. Its time for something new. Never happen though. I only know of one and that's the only convention I now attend in Manchester as there isn't much. I understand that horror is a massive genre but it may limit some people from coming who would usually come for other big shows. Personally, I probably wouldn't attend as I'm not so dedicated to Horror that I would attend a convention but I know people who would. It may also stop children from coming as there parents might not want them at a convetion all about horror. I do agree however that it is a good idea. Maybe you could mix two genres like Horror and Science Fiction but then again, that makes it mixed. I think a mixed convention, like with the previous Collectormania Manchesters, does have potential if it's advertised enough and the right guests are announced. Like you said, Doctor Who seems to be very popular in Manchester and so does Horror, so they'd be ideal guests to get at the next Collectormania Manchester if it takes place. Theres not that many little kids at the shows though is there really,i dont think itd be a big loss if a few kids under the age of 13 didnt show up. A good example of missing out on a rare Doctor Who guest because you dont like horror is a certain actor who appeared in WARRIORS OF THE DEEP who is at a horror related show in Manchester later in the year. And i dont see a problem mixing horror with sci fi within reason.Alien,Terminator and Predator all have sci fi and horrific elements.Ive always classed the first Alien and Predator flicks are horror movies myself anyway. Hmm I didn't know about that one. Shame Manchester is too far out the way for me. But you are right about Doctor Who - I've learnt of three more since monday! As it is I've now ruled out the big 2 day Dimensions ones to do two of the others.

Hmm true but then there's always the case of parents not going as they dont want to bring their children and have no one else to look after them. If Collectormania Manchester came back, I'd love to see it mixed to be honest as everyone has different tastes in their favourite shows and movies. It's worked everywhere else like that so I really can't understand why it isn't working in Manchester. As far as I'm aware, it's to do with people not buying enough autographs and the price of hiring out the GMEX which would mean a different choice of guests and a smaller venue would be better. Showmasters are currently trying to find a smaller venue and if Manchester had guests like Milton Keynes did with John Barrowman, Eve Myles and James Marsters then I'm sure it could make it's money in autographs and photoshoots. I'm not aware of Manchester's big Horror fan base but if there are enough fans then perhaps it's a good idea to get lots of Horror guests, Doctor Who guests and other guests to attract the fans. These are just my thoughts and opinions anyway. :) Edited May 28, 2009 by Doctor Who
Mungojerrie
If Showmasters are losing money with a signing event on £10(?) entry fees, I really doubt that they're going to risk holding a convention here. I'm thinking that they would end up with an even bigger loss holding a convention?

Beth
horror show? when / where? Not here I mentioned a Stephen King convention on another thread, where the cast members and directors of the films that were based on his books could attend !.That would be very popular. If not in Manchester, then in another part of the U.K.
friday13thfan
I'm a huge horror fan from Manchester and would love a horror con here, I mean I have to go to TX and Germany to meet some proper horror stars.... why can't we just try a proper go at a horror gig, it could be huge with the right guests!!! like mentioned you can get horror novelist like King, Barker, Koontz!!! then directors like Hooper, Romero etc, and then bring in stars from the franchise movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St, that alone would have TONS of fans freakin out!!! I dunno, I just think horror gets over shadowed and then when they get horror guests alot of the time it's tried and tested ones who don't do mega buisness coz everyone as already met them, which then statistically says the didn't score...... America runs a million great horror cons, Germany hosts a very popular one.... why can't we give it a proper shot
MikeDonovan
Ive always classed the first Alien and Predator flicks are horror movies myself anyway. Alien, yes - but not Predator. America runs a million great horror cons, Germany hosts a very popular one.... why can't we give it a proper shot The impression I get is that whenever SM have had 'horror' guests, they've gone down like a lead balloon, with a few exceptions. Bruce Campbell did alright. Robert Englund always seems to do a trade. I'm sure Christopher Lee would do very well. But unless you're a household name, I just doubt it's worthwhile for them. Out of all the horror guests that have ever turned up, how many of them have you seen genuinely busy? King, Barker, Koontz King you've got no chance, but Barker and Koontz are probably realistic. Doctor Who
If it was a show that I love such as Doctor Who, Torchwood, Supernatural etc then I would definitely attend a specialised and themed convention in Manchester. I suppose they could use Park Inn, Manchester as they use a lot of their other hotels around the country. I've just got my fingers crossed that a convention will take place in some shape or form in Manchester and if it only involves one guest from my favourite shows that I want to meet then I'd still go.
