What a shame

I posted about the Atheist bus campaign yesterday (http://www.justgiving.com/atheistbus) and the thread as I left yesterday was very civil so I'm not sure how it was in the last few hours of yesterday. I am very sad to see it gone, not so much for the topic of conversatiom but just for what removing the topic says to me.

It's telling that when a politician or political commentator scrutinises the Government, or a film critic slams a film, or a reviewer pillories a restaurant's food or service, it is generally regarded as acceptable stridency; but when a calm but passionate rationalist robustly and comprehensively critiques religion, it is often seen as the worst possible thing. No need for people to get their knickers in a twist, I would hope the people on this forum are intelligent enough for reasoned discussion.

Disappointed.

Indio just said Burt cancelled his signing somewhere else. It's not really causing any harm.

Please stop trying to stir things up - we know you like to do it, but there's no need to.

Especially when it comes to making comments about the moderators. What we do on here, and however long we're on here for isn't anything to do with you. We don't get paid, we just volunteer to help out. Unfortunately you seem to want to make that job harder for some reason.

The bus topic was still there when I went offline yesterday, and it was still civil then, Chris. At the point I went off there was no reason to edit something, even less delete the whole topic.

Usually if a discussion like you started there gets a bit rowdy, the moderators delete the post going over the top and not simply delete the whole topic.

indio's topic is still there because it is as general as he could be - you may have missed it James, but this matter has been discussed before.

I have to ask in that case why my whole thread was deleted in the C15 section a couple wks ago about the possibility of directors at the event? The last post I saw on it was pornographic spam and I dont see why the mod couldnt just delete the incriminating post instead of the whole thread.

I know I put a note on the thread to say "feel free to delete if this topic is redundant" as there were already suggestion threads (yet this was for discussing, not just suggesting, directors) and alot of threads have been deleted in the past but I wasnt sure if that was the reason it was deleted or cos of the spam attack. Either way the word, "trigger happy" came to mind. :P

All I can say is that I didn't delete it, so I have no exact idea what exactly happened there.

The normal rule is as I explained. It's extremely rare that a topic is removed without comment by a moderator. The only time I've personally done that is if the poster has been warned before about the very same subject lately.

With pornographic spam normally only the offending post is removed, which is the correct way to go just like you suggest.

Of course a moderator is a human being too, so someone may click the wrong button by accident once in a while. I know it has happened to me before when I started.

If you delete 20 spam topics and suddenly there's a post in a perfectly normal topic - very easy to not realize and hit the wrong button because you are "in the flow". I'm not sure if I'd call this trigger happy, probably rather "human error".

But if this happens, there usually is a post saying "oops, sorry, my mistake, you didn't do anything wrong."

We've sometimes seen threads disappearing that nobody deleted, like just this week the first Dania Ramirez announcement topic in the Eclipse 2 section. Possibly your thread was a victim of this problem, too.

I remember this happened quite a bit before the forum software was upgraded. Possibly it is a software glitch again, but we don't know for sure yet.

All I can say at the moment is that we're aware of this and are keeping an eye on it.

Lol don't worry we were genuinely looking for a housemate with similar interests and not a victim, but I can see where you are coming from with that one and I did point out in that post to please delete if it wasn't appropriate.

I don't want this to sound petty becuase it's not, its genuine, but it just hit me that you justified it as someone might get hurt. That is a very real danger, and call me naive but that hadn't actually struck me, but it made me think immediately of all those posts that pop up around the time of an event where people put up requests to buddy up in hotel rooms. Surely that is more dangerous and should be nipped in the bud too? (That's not trying to argue it's actually agreeing with you guys btw)

As for the Athiest bus, I'm a Christian and wasn't the least bit offended, but I can see why it was deleted. This forum is for people to gather about shared interests and particular events/shows etc, and when you introduce any polarizing topics like religion it can lead eventually to arguments deviating from why we are all on this forum in the first place. The topic was very civil, with no signs of arguments on the horizon, so I can see why it was ended on that note rather than risk what could be started by just one ill thought out inflammatory comment.
