My thoughts on the Midlands event

Recommended Posts

I enjoyed the event. The arena was big, well laid out so never felt crowded.

The free bus was very handy aswell and you had shops like tesco nearby. Travelling wasn't as bad as I had thought it might be for me.

Although there for 3 guests only, glad I went, especially for Bruce Campbell, he was great doing all the poses for folk in the photoshoots. Speaking of which, I'm glad Malcolm dusted down the old big fill light for them, nice one

I think ive pretty much covered everything, the virtual que system worked very well. And there were boards put up explaining how every aspect of the event was gonna work. And the white board was always up to date. The free signature was a nice bonus too.

I think everyone at showmasters did an amazing job at this event. It was the best one i have attended and considering that it was a new venue is just wow.

Thank you showmasters, I give conventry two big thumbs up !

that made me smile, as white board duty is the worst job you could possibly do, and im glad that someone thinks i did it well XD i was rushing back and forward making sure it was updated frequently :)

The more I think about it I'm not so sure that the event was a little on the quiteish side I suspect it was so well organised it just seemed that way, the room was a great size, unlike MK you didn't have to battle past dozens of familys with pushchairs and prams who are bored with the shops and decide to walk around collectormania just for a look.

I'd like to add my comments on here I think, first off, congrats on another ace event! I had a great time. All the guests I met were very willing to chat for a while, especially Warwick who named me part of his "rock band" lol!

It seemed less packed than some other events but it was a bigger space, so that's probably partly why. The venue was perfect though and the coachs were brill, so thanx for putting them on. All in all, a great weekend!

I arrived at about 8:30am on the Saturday. The queuing was a bit haphazard to start off with. The security people seemed to have panicked about what to do with the people who already had tickets. They moved the queue so that it blocked the entrance... anyhow... they seemed to have sorted the problem without too much confusion then handed out a goodie bag!

When we were allowed in, I managed to bag tickets 0001 for the Hattie Hayridge talk and 0007 for the Sirtis / Spiner talk! :D

The ushers were very friendly, calm, collected and helpful!

Guests were all very friendly:

Kenny Baker

Hattie Hayridge

Brent Spiner

George Takei

Nicholas Courtney

Bruce Campbell seemed a bit pretentious / grumpy and what is up with all the requirements on the whiteboard.. was shocked by it.. but never mind.

Loved the awesome talk given by Brent and Marina! It was hilarious! A laugh a minute!

The quality of the food was awful and was expensive. Lots of stalls which I liked and there were plenty of space in between so it wasn't too crowded. The atmosphere was more chilled than Collectormania 12 last year.

Next time, they ought to have a Collectormania at the Kassam Staduim in Oxford! - There are too many roundabouts to get to the venue!

Bruce was one of the busiest guests so to try and save time, confusion and embarrasment (for all parties) a list was put up to help people

Oxford is worse getting into than Coventry, especially on the A40. The traffic there is horrendous. But its a good idea, if theres a venue on the outskirts of Oxford (missing the A40) that could work

I'll second that Oxford is absolutely awful to get to :D Didn't bother by train, and when we went by car, there were so many one way systems in place that we ended up having to get a police escort to cross a no-go zone just to et out.

That's just because you DIDN'T HAVE A MAP. Oxford is fine. And I second the notion to have one in the lovely city. *shifty eyes*

Nowt wrong with the Ricoh in my opinion. It was easy to get to and the layout and size of the place was fantastic and worked well......my vote goes to staying right there in future

We popped up on the Sunday to see Leonard Roberts, Mads Mickleson and the Dr Who guests...

Yes the event was quiet, but I had expected that and it was nice to be able to look around the stalls without being pushed about!!!

All the guests we met were lovely!

The food was better then at Gmex and Comic Con IMP... :) and the venue was nice, quite easy to find and lots of parking (not too expensive - you should try parking at Wembley!!!)

All in all a nice event!

Try commuting in nearly every day from Reading to get to uni!

I find it humerous that for a Midlands event, they chose somewhere which is a stones throw from MK!

I did enjoy the experience of crewing at the Ricoh.

Once inside, i got my bearings well (always good to know for a crew member), however, outside, i got soooo confused. Its a giant orbital road and car park mix, where it looks the same in every direction. I noticed some people were trying to exit via the photo shoot area, insisting that is where they came in! More signs for exit direction would probably be a good idea!

The guests were a pleasure to work with, and everything seemed a little less tense backstage.

The organisers did a great job.

RE: Oxford as a location.

Not a totally diabolical idea, however, it would require a LOT of forethinking and planning to ensure people find their way to the location. I think moving up to Nottingham, and the National Ice Centre, or maybe over to the Birmingham ***** (probably as accessible as Ricoh). I'd suggest Leicester, but off the top of my head, I can't think of anywhere in the area to host it!

I think the Notts Arena would be a great venue. I'd suggest Pride Park Derby but it hasn't really got the conferencing facilities, which is a shame as its real near to the Rail station and its dead central.

Anyways, I thought the Coventry event was excellent. Me and My GF had been to Milton Keynes and the LFACC before. Milton Keynes was ok but quite hassly, but we had a dreadful experience in London. It would take a lot of convincing for me to go back to either of those. I've yet to experience Manchester and Glasgow.

Coventry was perfect. It was quiet, but thats how we like it! we got all our autos without overdue hussle and bussle, the talks were great (although I'd like to have had longer on Marina and Brents talk), and the bus shuttle worked well too. I think everyone was relaxed and this is the way the events should be.

I dont think Notts arena would be good at all. The floor is terrible as its over the ice. Its not very easy to find, and has no parking. Plus im not sure it would be big enough.

Park? Why park when itsa stones throw from the city centre, and the tram comes from the Park and Ride??? There would be enough space, considering the size of the coventy hall, which isn't huge.

I only went to meet ernie hudson so wasnt really interested in the rest before I got there. I got in and I have to say I loved it. Meeting all these actors and stuff was great. Wandering round the stalls seeing what bargains I would find.

Overall loved the day and im attending the MK one and Coventry 2 without a doubt

thanks so much showmasters!!

I dont think the very busy trams are really practical. Nottingham is quite rough, and busy. Carrying large items to get signed and dressing up could be a problematic. You often dont get a seat on the trams and even park and ride has limited spaces for such a busy city.

Thinking about it, Coventry did nothing wrong at all in my eyes. It wouldn't bother me if the event was held there all the time. I'm just being selfish as I live in Derby and would like it more local !!!

Hey, no public humiliation of the fact that I couldn't find my way out of Coventry to get to Oxford hehe. As it turns out, my back up plan was right
