Greg,

Impressive collection, to be sure, but there are quite a few items that look rather fishy to me.

Sorry to burst any bubbles, but I'm quite certain your Mark Hamill and Alec Guinness are not the real thing.

Your Padmé doesn't seem to be signed at all, or is it just me?

The multiple Christensen, Portman, Ewan from AOTC (Geonosis on the back of the Reek) are definately NOT the real thing.

Same problem with the Hamill, Fisher, Ford in the Death Star corridor.

Even your 'Barrie Holland C3' is a terrible fake, while he is easy to get.  I've worked with him before.  His autograph doesn't look like that at all!

The Luke/Biggs combo: Biggs is the real thing, Luke is fake!

The Artoo/Threepio combo (black/white) in the Tative IV corridor is a screaming fake as is the Vader/Leia combo in the detention cell.

The worst, and probably most expensive one in your collection, must be the B/W Vader/Leia/Governor Tarkin.  Not one of them is the real thing!

I see you obtain quite a few items from eBay and dealers.  Remember the FBI report?  95% of the eBay items are fake.

You need to take a whole lot more care in doing research and finding out about the history of the pieces you aquire.  It's a shame to see a fan waste so much money on items that aren't even worth the paper they are signed on.

Like I said, mate, don't mean to burst your bubble, but I think - as an avid collector and crusader against fake autographs myself (the very reason why I started the Bounty Hunter in the first place) - it was my obligation to point out your fakes to you.

Feel free to ask reputable dealers in the UACC for reference.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  I'm sure this comes as a blow.

Thanks for the feedback Mark

I had a bad feeling this would be the case with the ones you have pointed out. I brought most of these early on, when I first started my collection and since visiting more and more web sites and doing more and more research, I was pretty sure this may be the case. the only one that surprised me was Barrie Holland as I believed that to be real (never mind - at least that ones easy to replace).

Part of the reason I done the website in the first place was to get feedback from the likes of your good self and confim my worst fears(I think I knew anyway but was in denial, letting the powers of wishful thinking take over)

The Padme one you mention is signed above her right hand on the grass in blue pen but since this came form ebay as well its probably another fake.

Its a shame as I really like some of the images of the fake ones, In hindsight Id rather have just got them un signed. The only good thing is that I didnt pay too much money for them (I know now this is just further evidence that they are fakes)#

never mind, you live and learn!

Very nice collection Greg! Although I'm afraid I have to agree with Mark about those dodgy items. Everything else looks good to me though.

Ebay is a very dangerous place to buy autographs. We all do it, but you have to seriously do your homework before parting with any money. My advice when checking out an item would be:

1. Look for signatures to compare it to that you know were signed in-person and are genuine. The more you can find to compare, the better. Try to get a feel for how the signature is signed; follow the pen loops, don't just look at the general appearance. If the ebay piece differs from the genuine examples, stay away.

2. What do you know about where the piece came from? If it says it was signed in-person, how did the seller get it? Harrison Ford and the like do not make it to backwater towns very often, so unless the seller lives in LA, New York or London I would have serious questions. Email the seller and ask for more info, if they cannot supply it or it does not sound plausible, stay away.

3. Ask other experienced collectors their opinions, but remember at the end of the day that is all it is, an OPINION. None of us can say with 100% certainty whether an item is real or not, but those of us who have been in the hobby a good few years and got all these people in person can make a more educated guess.

4. Is the seller reputable? Look at their other items and go through the same process as above. If they have other dodgy signatures in stock they are either a forger or one of their suppliers is, stay away. Note that membership of the UACC is often quoted as a way to make the seller seem more reputable, but this is available simply by paying an annual fee! Becoming a registered dealer with the UACC does require a vetting process, but that does not guaruntee an item's authenticity. Even the best dealers have the odd fake in their stock.

5. A photo of the celeb "signing" for the dealer is meaningless. It would take a forger about 10 seconds with a good search engine to find a picture of any celebrity signing at a premiere somewhere around the world. Hell, this forum would provide them with quite a few of celebs at shows. Any of them can then be put up in an auction as "proof" that they got an autograph from the celeb. Even if they were at the premiere and took the picture of the celeb signing, does that prove he/she signed for them? On the item they are selling?

6. COAs are by and large utterly pointless and a means to get naive people to buy fakes. The only exception to this is where you are buying an item from a reputable dealer, in which case their COA may be worth keeping with the item. I like to try and get sellers to write a history of the piece on their COA, detailing where it was signed etc.

7. Always remember the golden rule: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

I recently travelled to New York in order to meet Harrison Ford and get a couple of autographs. It sounds easy when its written like that, but I assure you it was anything but. The reality of getting a Harrison Ford autograph was mostly standing around in the bitter cold from 4am to midnight, punctuated by high speed car chases, frantic runs from one side of the city to the other, verbal abuse from both Harrison and other collectors, and a mad, cut-throat, frenzy of collectors and dealers whenever we got near him. I was lucky and managed to get three that day, a lot of people got none. After going through that, would you sell one for $13.99 0n ebay? I know I wouldn't....

I hope that helps. I'm always happy to chat about any aspect of the hobby, so feel free to drop me a line.

Graham

Its great to see experienced collectors sharing their knowledge with everyone, as I believe the only way forward is education.

As some of you may know I am the UACC European Membershp Director, and whereas I agree mainly with what Graham has said here, I feel that I need to clarify a couple of points.

The statement above does was true a while ago regarding people joining just for credibility in selling, the UK now check everyone before their joining and monitor the members as well as the dealers. You cannot now, just join and sell bad stuff as the UK team will monitor the items and the membership will terminated. What this means is that slowly we hope to clean from within the organisation.

To become a registered dealer you have to have served 3 years unbroken membership and be in good standing. Then submit references from your peers. There are only 192 Registered Dealers in the World.

Yes I agree that anyone can make a mistake, if you had bought from a UACC Registered Dealer you are guaranteed a full refund as they are obliged to give it.

If you are going to buy, ask the questions before parting with your hard earnt money, there isn't an honest dealer out there that wouldnt be willing to part with any information they have on a piece they have for sale. The honest ones have nothing to hide.

Thanks for clarifying the current situation with the UACC Mick. I'm very glad to hear there is long term monitoring of dealers going on. Apologies for any erroneous information about this in my original post.

Keep up the good work,

Sincerely,

Graham

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news Mark, but looking at your profile, you bought a big amount from very bad autographdealers on eBay yourself. I count at least 100 you bought over the past years that are from dealers with a bad reputation and well known fakers. :D

I'm somewhat of a hater of fakers myself and I have an eBay blacklist. So it surprised me that a crusader like yourself has bought so many. I hope you know this by now (and learned it the hard way yourself and that's the reason you now try to help others as well). I truely hope you indeed didn't resell them, but just tore them up... If you like I can e-mail you the dealers who's autographs you can throw in the trash without me even looking at them... :D

i got the c3 poster via ebay from warwick davis' daughter's headmaster, when warwick was at c3 his wife went round some of the guests and got 23 signatures on it, then the davis' donated to the school to sell for a local charity, when i meet warwick at another event i asked him if he recognised the poster and he did and the poster tube also has his home address on it, i had added to this poster at a few events now it has 40 signatures and getting more at LFCC

Impressive collection! GG,

I was wondering if people will go to ED17 and get all of the guests autos or just a particular few, just curious.

As for reputable sellers on Ebay, I prefer to actually obtain an auto from an actor in person. I would only buy on ebay if I was satisfied it came from a particular show or a private collector. So called 'dealers' is just a big no no for me, no matter how reputable they look.

There was a time when I would, but financially , as big a fan of Star Wars as I am , I cannot afford to get autos of the people who played the smaller roles anymore.

I quite agree in terms of prefering to get autos in person, definetly my preferred option, and would stay clear of general ebay auctions completely. For the few autographs I have purchased on line, I always get these from a recognised UACC dealer. For me, meeting the celeb is half the fun, so it is only those that I think I may not meet, I have purchased.

Hi all,

Allow me to comment on these items and set the record straight.

I have indeed purchased items from eBay in the past and got burned sometimes. Even I have made mistakes.

BUT! I have ALWAYS had my collection double checked by a friend and UACC dealer in the UK (who attends most of these Showmaster events as well) before they were offered at the infamous Sith Signings and am confident that NO FAKES were sold to the collectors. Whenever an item was under discussion, it was removed from the stack en returned to the eBay seller. One such item that I remember was a double signed Daniel Radcliffe/Emma Watson photo. It was removed, returned and refunded, but NOT sold to collectors.

If you check out my profile (as some of you did), you'll find it has been a while since I last purchased on eBay. Since the Radcliffe/Watson incident, I have decided no longer to purchase from eBay, even though some of the sellers which you claim sell only fakes do sell the authentic item now and then. It's those that I picked out, together with my UACC-friend.

I have a very strong reputation and wouldn't want it damaged by accidentaly selling off a forgery.

As for the Ian McDiarmid items, those were not from eBay but obtained in person at the Sadler's Wells Theater on 30th November 2005 (at the Edward Scissorhands premiere). I invite you to check out www.markdermul.be where I showcase some of these.

As for my reputation being damaged, each and everyone of you must make his own conclusion, of course. I can only say that this is the feedback I have received from people who've bought from me in the past:

And of course, there is the money back guarantee.

I appreciate your comments and invite you to check out my pages and let me know your thoughts on the items I have listed. I always value a second opinion.

Thanks!

well,i don't know about any of this nonsense...

but,i absolutely adore, cherish and love my star wars trading cards i bought from mark/bounty hunter.

and didn't he send some poor sap a signed photo to replace the one he'd bought from a dodgy dealer.

not the work of a ne'r-do-well,in my opinion!

i think bounty hunters reputation is safe, for now.

Jamie - Im the poor sap you mention - not a very nice way of wording it but I get your point.

In addition to the photo Mark kindly sent me free of charge as a replacement for a fake I had purchased from ebay, I have also purchased a couple from him and whilst I am not the greatest expert on autograph authenticity, throughout my dealings with Mark, I have never had any reason to doubt his honesty and intergrity. To me he seems very genuine and as a fan himself I dont believe he would delibrately do anything to harm this great hobby
