I come from a generation that precedes men going where no men had gone before and guys jumping through Stargates, either to other worlds, Atlantis or anywhere else.  Unfortunately, people today tend to take for granted the huge achievement which was represented by the Apollo 11 mission and all those which followed..

As a result of the Shuttle missions etc, space travel today has become commonplace and as such, rarely justifies any media/press time unless there are problems.  I well remember the excitement of actually being able to witness a man taking his first step on the moon and for that reason, the opportunity to meet Buzz Aldrin is one which cannot be missed regardless of price.  I can't believe that people can get so worked up about Sci Fi film and TV heroes and yet turn their back on a real hero like this guy.

I'm starting to sound like my father so I think it's time I got down off my soapbox but needless to say I will be there for Buzz.

I think some people have missed the point a little bit on his signature.

It currently has a very high value, so if he turned up and only charged £10, there would be literally 100's of Buzz signatures on the Internet on Monday and he would have completely devalued its worth, not to mention all the other people that have already paid for it at shows in the USA.

If something has a high value, you don't suddenly drop the price just because you do an event like this, it is the same as if the market rate for gold bars was £500 each, you wouldn't get someone selling them to you for £10 , it just wouldn't make sense !

Whilst it may vary slightly his current auto goes for about $350, so at £90 it is actually cheaper than it would be if you bought a genuine sig from ebay (if that is possible) or a dealer.

Autographs like anything else have a value, which depends on market rates, scarcity etc

Yes, in an ideal world Buzz would just role up and sign for free, but that is not the world we live in.

I'm getting his sig for my nephew, he'll be 1 a few days after Autographica. It'll be Birthday, Christening and Xmas pressie, as well as a fantastic cornerstone for a autograph collection. My niece is the recipient of a Die Another Day poster (film was released on her birthday, 20/11/02) currently signed by Makoare (Mr KIll) and hopefully Stephens this weekend.

For my part, it'll be worth it to meet the inspiration for a million parental crises a few years back. How many of you guys got panicky about not getting kiddos fave Toy Story figure....

Oh and the second guy to walk on the moon.

Btw the Observer ran a piece about the Autographica that had Lazenby at it (around ATOC time), about how guys and gals get excited about meeting actors who acted like they'd been in space (Sirtis, Crosby etc...) and walked past the guys who REALLY went where no man had gone before....

It has also been pointed on this forum om an earlier thread that when Buzz did a book signing event he was only charging $15!

By the way did you see Buzz on TV last night?

Who would pay £90 for an autograph for someone whose most recent space shot was with Home r Simpson!

The Observer got some of the info wrong in the article, they said: Heather Lowe is married to Andrew Prine, gaunt face of V in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I've checked IMDB because I don't remember a character calld V on DS9 and he wasn't! He was in one ep of TNG and the character had a different name. So much for checking there facts out!

Thought you might be interested. :D

They have got two shows confused..........you may remember (depending on your age!) a TV show callled "V" from the mid-80's about earth being invaded but creatures who looked human but are actually lizards........Andrew Prine was one of the main Lizards, an alien called Steven (they took human names). It was his face you would see on commercials.......hence the "gaunt face of V" phrase and the confusion.

I know this guy is elite and rare and walked on the moon but £90? that's half a month's uni money! plus to be fair I wouldn't pay that much for ANYONE either! £50 is about top and that would have to be Richard Dean Anderson :wub:surfy sah xx

886368

Once again, hormones conquer genuine human achievement ! :D:unsure:

It is true that he is some one I find attractive but that would not be my sole reason for paying £50 :P - RDA does not do signings/convestions/events. period. :( if SM ever got him I eggagerate not when I say fans would come from around the world and camp over night to get an in-person signeture from him!!! would def pay £50 to meet RDA if it meant getting a personalised signeture and a posed photo

If his book was 15$ then it's bad form to charge more than cover price to get a sig on it. My guess would be it's just those books he's promoting that would get signed. He would also be on a fee from the bookshop or the publisher would be giving him a fee.

887346

I don't know how much the book was but the cost for Buzz to autograpgh to book was $15 per book.

I agree with you that he was probably on an appearance fee from the bookstore but not necessarily from the publisher, as they both have a vested interest to sell his book.

Saying that I would imagine that he is also being paid a fee plus expenses to appear at autographica.

Perhaps if he is selling copies of his book, at autographica, if you buy one from him he might charge only £10 to autograph :D but doubt it.

OK so Buzz was the second man on the moon, depending on conspiracy theorists, but changing the subject slighty, if you read Brian Blessed's write up on the site he is also a bit of an action man, climbed Everest 3 times, once is an acheivement.

I was lucky to be on holiday at lands End in September when Brian arrived in his beaten up allegro and he was happy to pose for photos, which I got him to autograph when we were invited to the live show of Britains Worst Celebrity driver, and then we spent time with Brian and the other celebs having a drink in Longships bar afterwards, and the man is so amiable and witty a right gem.

After spending £90 on Buzz, if you can still afford it and get the chance I would certainly recommend meeting Brian.

Where does his autograph "go" for $350? You check websites such as www.astro-auction.com and certain Space autograph dealer websites and you'll find that even at $180 it can be difficult to sell his (basic) autograph. Someone somewhere on this forum suggested Buzz's autograph was worth £250 which is about $430... also at the UACC show in NJ his base fee was $150 or £87 at todays exchange rate. It'll only be one item for me.

If you go to Buzz's own website, he has three autograph dealers he has contracts with...all specialise in astronaut/space related autographs...check out the prices there. One of them was called novaspace I think!

I have read all the posts concerning Buzz, there is only one option if you do not want to pay it dont.

Please let the people make there own choice, i will be getting a few bits signed by him but they are for my own personal collection. Some of the people there will be trying to make a quick sale, on the auction sites for £120 next week.

The true collector will value there own pieces, and not try to flog them for a quick buck.

You can find his auto for all sorts of different amounts. Fraser's the autograph store in London have this currently for sale:

ALDRIN, BUZZ

An original colour NASA photograph (approx. 7.25x9.25 in) of Aldrin pictured in his spacesuit (minus helmet); signed across a centre portion of the image in bold black felt pen ink "With best Wishes, Buzz Aldrin". The piece also features a First Man on the Moon postage stamp, a first day of issue cancellation and two 1969 Washington D.C postmarks across the bottom of the image.

£775.00

I bought a slightly dinged signed photograph of Buzz on the moon (who also added Apollo 11) on Astro-Auction earlier this year. The damage is only noticeable when you hold the photograph to the light at an obscure angle and at £18 including shipping it was a bargain.

I'd like to have 3 items signed for my own personal collection but to be honest there's no way I can justify spending £300 on three signatures so I will only get one item signed and if there is an additional fee for signing a multi-signed piece then I'm just not going to bother.

When all was said and done, if you just wanted a Buzz Aldrin sig you could get it on a 8 x 6 Collectspace Montage photo for £55 at Autographica.

There was a wide variance in prices though, depending on what you wanted signed or what you wanted him to write.

Either way, probably a once in a lifetime opportunity and worth every penny in my view.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Buzz and got some great photos with him as well.
