  1. Excellent pictures, thanks for sharing :)
  2. What would you do with one: BBC News 4 Nov 2010: Scientists in the UK have demonstrated a flexible film that represents a big step toward the "invisibility cloak" made famous by Harry Potter. The film contains tiny structures that together form a "metamaterial", which can, among other tricks, manipulate light to render objects invisible. Flexible metamaterials have been made before, but only work for light of a colour far beyond that which we see. Physicists have hailed the approach a "huge step forward". The bendy approach for visible light is reported in the New Journal of Physics. Metamaterials work by interrupting and channelling the flow of light at a fundamental level; in a sense they can be seen as bouncing light waves around in a prescribed fashion to achieve a particular result. But light waves can only be herded around by structures about the size of their wavelength - a property which is connected to their colour. Until now, the most striking demonstrations of invisibility have occurred for light waves with a much longer wavelength than we can see. This is because it is simply easier to construct metamaterials with relatively large structures. Even flexible metamaterial films have been shown off for this high-wavelength range. For the far shorter waves we can see, a metamaterial requires structures so tiny - nanostructures - that they push the boundaries of manufacturing. "The first step is imagining first of all that this could be done," said Andrea Di Falco of St Andrews University, the author of the paper. "All the typical results have been reached in flat and rigid surfaces because this is the legacy of the procedures used to create nanostructures." Continue reading the main story “Start Quote It clearly isn't an invisibility cloak yet - but it's the right step toward that†End Quote Professor Ortwin Hess Imperial College London So instead of building the typical stacks of the "fishnet" structures on hard, brittle silicon, Dr Di Falco used a thin polymer film. "Typically what you do is stack several layers of fishnet structures and this all together will give you a metamaterial," Dr Di Falco explained. "What I've done here is fabricate a single layer - I lift it off so that at the end I am left with a self-standing membrane - and show that it has the properties required to create a 3D flexible metamaterial." Tents moment Ortwin Hess, a physicist who recently took up the Leverhulme Chair in Metamaterials at Imperial College London, called the work "a huge step forward in very many ways". "It clearly isn't an invisibility cloak yet - but it's the right step toward that," he told BBC News. He added that the next step would be to characterise the way that the material's optical properties change as it is bent and folded. If the properties were sensitive to the movement, it may be useful for next-generation optics and lenses in, for example, handheld cameras. If instead they were impervious to bending and motion, the invisibility cloak could be that much closer - but Professor Hess added that is still some way off. "Harry Potter has to wait still - that's the huge goal," he said. "So far he's had to live in a house and now he can live in something like a tent; it's not the cloak that adjusts to his shape, but it's a bit more flexible. Now we have to take the next step forward."
  3. Excellent as always Jason, It was great to see David B and the other crew members who put so much effort into helping at these events, i have been to all the Collectormania events from the first one and will continue to do so. Keep up the good work.

  5. According to autoblog.nl, the Top Gear crew was caught while on location by a video-camera-wielding fan-boy of the show outside the race track. It was there they caught a glimpse, of a driver in white racing gear similar to that worn by our Stiggie. More importantly, he was carrying a matching white helmet. The Dutch fan-boys at the site all over this whole blogging about cars thing have identified the chap as none other than former Volkswagen Polo racer Tim Schrick. So now that we know Tim Schrick is one of the Stigs...the question is who are the others... Or better yet...could this have been on purpose? Perhaps it's one big set up to confuse the fans...or perhaps the fans got too close to identifying the real stig? Or maybe we'll see exactly what was going on in the episode that was shot today... View the pics here............ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5suHbD4t6U
  6. Warner Bros is expected to officially announce plans to release the adaptation of the last and final Harry Potter book, split into two separate films. This makes more than perfect sense considering the 36 chapter plus epilogue book is a whopping 759 pages long. Fans have complained that the last two movies which suffered from plot compression. That’s probably because to hardcover releases of Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix ranged from 734 to 896 pages in length. Warner Bros will release Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I in November 2010, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II six months later in May 2011. Both of the movies will be filmed concurrently. Screenwriter Steve Kloves, who wrote five of the fix films, is hard at work on both screenplays. Director David Yates, who directed both Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince (which began production in September) has already signed on for both sequels. Producer David Heyman explained to the LA Times: “I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons. Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can’t be done.†“The question will be, where do you break it? And how do you make them one but two separate and distinct stories? Do you break it with a moment of suspense or one of resolution? These are the interesting challenges. But each book has presented its challenges.†The official book synopsis: “It all comes down to this - a final faceoff between good and evil. You plan to pull out all the stops, but every time you solve one mystery, three more evolve. Do you stay the course you started, despite your lack of progress? Do you detour and follow a new lead that may not help? Do you listen to your instincts, or your friends? Lord Voldemort is preparing for battle and so must Harry. With Ron and Hermione at his side, he’s trying to hunt down Voldemort’s Horcruxes, escape danger at every turn, and find a way to defeat evil once and for all. How does it all end?â€

  13. Terrence Howard Set for Iron Man Source: Variety Terrence Howard is set to join Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, reports Variety. The Jon Favreau-directed film is the first to be financed through an arrangement that Marvel Studios formed with Merrill Lynch. Paramount Pictures releases the film May 2, 2008. Howard will play Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, the confidante of Iron Man's alter ego, Tony Stark. Rhodes, a high ranking military officer and aviator, steers the team that develops the robotic suit that allows the sickly Stark to fly around and battle bad guys. In the comic, Rhodes' character gets his own armored suit and evolves into an occasionally antagonistic character called War Machine. That development seems likely to be saved for the sequel, though, as Iron Man will battle villain the Mandarin when shooting begins in February in L.A. "The suit is purely an innovative creation, so this is Marvel meets Tom Clancy technology," Marvel Studios production president Kevin Feige said. "Having the best actors for the key roles allows them to inhabit the hyperkinetic reality of this world."

  20. Harry Potter was going to be filming in Italy ( Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix Filming in Italy ) but now it has been leaked by a local italian newspaper writer. WB has come forward to say that the film will NOT be filming in Italy anymore. The people involved in the negotiations had signed confidentiality agreements and apparently forgot that when they leaked the information. As such according to BadTaste.it the gig is up in Balestrino Italy since everyone now knows about it and I suppose WB doesnt want to have to deal with thousands of onlookers on set. So the big question is whatcha wanna bet somebody is gonna get fired in the Mayors Office in Balestrino Italy if they ever figure out who leaked it to the press?

  22. According to sources, former '007' Sir Sean Connery is reportedly set to make a cameo appearance in director Martin Campbell's upcoming 'James Bond' feature Casino Royale. The 75-year old Scottish actor, currently recovering from a kidney operation, has reportedly been scripted into the project, however it is not expected he will perform any dashing heroics for the film. Connery will reportedly appear in the film during an action sequence, when new James Bond, actor Daniel "Layer Cake" Craig, gets into a fight, with Connery, never one to hesitate, diving under a table for protection.
