Edit: For some reason the poll didn't ask the question. So the question is:

Did you read the books before the movies were ever released?

Personally, I had read the books and been a fan for many years before the movies were released. I had practically grown up reading these books, as I read The Hobbit when I was very young, and just completely fell in love with it.

Shortly after, The Lord of the Rings followed, which just captured my imagination. I never, ever tire of reading those books.

There are always debates regarding books versus movies, and I am just curious to know, how many of you were already fans of Tolkien, or how many of you became fans after seeing the movies.

Nosy parker aren't I :D

I first picked up the book when I was ten, but I found it a bit hard going and the school year ended before I really got anywhere with it!! Then I didnt get the oppurtunity at Secondary School, then the films came out when I was at College and the was it... HOOKED!! I've since read the Hobbit and Im on the second book of the fellowship!

i must admit i hadn't read the books before FOTR came out, even though I'd hear about it. folks told me it was to difficult to read... *duuh??*

and when the first film came out, isch, i'm quite embarressed to tell you this, but i wasn't too eager to see it.

I was dragged to the movies by my boyfriend at the time.

I was like: "ok, i'll go, but just because you insist!!"

Then. The miunute it started I was stuck. And when the film was over I was lost, lost in the world of Lord of the Rings. I started reading the books right after, and since then, I think I've read the books, like... I dunno, SEVERAL times. And the appendixes as well, and of course Silmarillion and The Hobbit.

Now, I consider myself as a true Tolkien fan or Lord of The Rings fan, or if you'd like, a Ringer. :D

Before the films the furthest i'd got was part way through FOTR.

Within a few weeks of seeing it for the first time at the cinema I'd done FOTR, TTT, ROTK and even The Hobbit (just couldn't stop).

Silmarillian next

aww i love that book!!

I must say I found it pretty hard to read, all the different names of the Gods, the people, places...

But then, i liked that you didn't have to read it from page 1 to the last, you could read the different chapters that interests you.

I like the appendixes more, where you can read about our heros in the Triology!

I've never actually read the books but i've read the first chapter about a million times! The only copy i own is a huge hard back of all three. It always seemed easier to pick up a nice light paperback, Terry Pratchett or somthing.

I know its naughty. And i feel gulty every time i see the films for not reading the books. I've read the Hobbit loads of times though.

Will try to read them again.
