This event is the first of its kind. So unfortunately it's a little hard to share stories or experiences.

Stories from other events may not be very helpful for you I'm afraid because things may go totally different.

Well I have a few bits of advice about the eXcel, so I can impart those.

1) There are lots of places to eat (someone posted the PDF guide in another thread) BUT around lunch time loads of the places, especially the ones inside the centre, have MASSIVE queues. I would suggest snacks so you cna eat later when it's died down OR eating a bit earlier to beat the rush and then snacking later.

2) Take water/a drink that will keep you refreshed with you. This goes for like, every convention ever lol It gets hot and stuffy around that many people indoors and you'll be walking about and standing up a lot. Keep yourself hydrated.

3) The cash machines inside empty fast on event days and also have massive queues. I suggest getting the cash you need out before you get to the event from somewhere else, plus a little extra just in case.

4) Linked to the above, BUDGET! Plan out the photoshoots (if not got them beforehand) and autographs you want. Then plan a little for food and drink. Then plan some contingency money for anything you may see on the stalls that you'd like to buy or any autographs you want but didnt plan for...

...then plan to bring like £30-40 on top of all that for emergencies/miscalculations :YAHOO:

There's the basics lol
Attended:

CM:MK 2-18, LFCC '07-'12, CM:Midlands 1-3, CM:L 1-2, Hub 2-4, Glasgow '09, , Bad Wolf, EMS 1-2

Attending:

CM:MK 19, LFCC '13, EMS 3, Destination Star Trek London

Hi! I'm new to this too!

I wondered how the autographs at these types of events work - is there generally time for them to sign more than one thing? (say a DVD box set and a photo) or is it a case of you go in and get what you're given?

I'm mega excited, even though it's going to cost me a bomb! I hope it's worth it.
When I met Terry Pratchett I was a bit underwhelmed, but he was very nice, and did sign my book and a friends and we had a photo and it was free, so...

I am a bit worried that these actors are so built up as their characters in my head, it would be hard to meet the person behind the actor, iykwim?

For the busier guests there may be a maximum number of items you can have signed at once (anything above that will require you to take another queue ticket and queue again later), but up to that you can have as many items signed as you pay for. (The autograph prices listed are per signature, so if you want a DVD cover and a photo signed, you'd pay twice the amount on the list.)
Attended: Hub2 (S86), Hub3 (S9), CM:London 2009, Hub4 (S2), Invasion Spring 2010 (ST128), Bad Wolf 2010 (ST68), Roadhouse (S1), Hub5 (S2), Hallowhedon2 (S20), Hub6 (S2), Hallowhedon3 (S1), Hub7 (S68), Hub8 (S6), Hallowhedon4 (S1)
Crewed: CM16, LFCC 2010, CM:London 2010, CM17, LFCC 2011, Sportsmania 2011, CM18, LFCC 2012, CM Glasgow 2012, EMS 2012, Autographica 2012, Star Trek London, Eternal Twilight 9, CM19, Chevron 8.0
Definitely Attending/Crewing: LFCC 2013, Hallowhedon5
Possible/Probable: CMG 2013, CFCC 2013, Winter LFCC 2013, CM20

My met list (from cons, signings, stage doors etc)

For any guest where there is a virtual queue system in place, the maximum number of items you can get signed in one go is normally five. And etmuse is correct in that the price is per signature.
