As I posted in another thread, I'm staying at the Premiere in Beckton, at the end of the DLR line and a few stops from Custom House, which I was hoping to have the DLR for over the weekend, but it looks like I will only be able to get there that way on the Friday, and (maybe) leave on it, if I extend the stay to Monday.

However, Beckton also has a Bus Station and the Route 300 runs regularly to Custom House (and on to Canning Town), so with those and any replacement buses put on for the DLR, there should be no problem with the travel to/from the conference centre. I also note that the bus runs as late as 1.27am from Custom House to Beckton, currently.

I really can not stress this as an alternative.  Must be a GREAT way of getting to the venue IMHO:

In my opinion (and looking on the map) Canning Town is nearby the Excel. We are coming from Barking, so the last 'piece' of the ride we'll walk (I think)

Could someone clarify; does that mean Barking to Custom house is also closed, I have looked on site journey planner but it still isnt clear to me?

Trekmeister, having checked the Underground Map, I am not quite sure that I follow your question. There is no direct underground/DLR link between Barking and Custom House. Presumably you change at West Ham.

The DLR is closed that Sat/Sun between Canning Town and Beckton. See www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/track-closures.pdf. The online Travel planners have not incorporated this - at least not yet.

Assuming I am correct in my understanding, you would change at West Ham, go the one stop to Canning Town, and change to a replacement bus (or a 300) from there.

They have a sped-up film of the ride from south to north and back and I went a little wide-eyed at the appearance of a single-prop aircraft in view!  A reminder that London City Airport is not far away!

Aside from that slight concern, it does look like a cool way to cross the river B) - at £4.30 a go - which is not bad I suppose.

The 300 bus route from the east might suit you guys staying in Barking better. You still get the tube, but just get off at East Ham, instead of West Ham, and get on a 300 bus there and get to The Excel that way. I'm staying in Beckton, so if you do, you might be on the bus I get on to get to The Excel B)

There may be replacement buses and a 300 going west from Canning Town, if you go via there, but that route means changing trains as well. At least you have choices.

See http://www.tfl.gov.u...ps/buses/?r=300

Doesn't help if your hotel is in Beckton and was picked because it's right next to the terminus for the DLR.

Looks like the car parks are going to be full.

I note that Google Street Maps are now showing much more up-to-date images for most of the area around the Excel (May/June 2012), which is particularly helpful for the eastern end of The Excel and seeing what it looks like. The previous images, if you were not aware, were showing building work at that end. Now you can clearly see how you can get into the Excel from the DLR (and bus) from Prince Regent station, if you are coming from Beckton, or from that side. The DLR is still operating on the Friday, after all, and buses from Beckton (for when the DLR isn't running) stop there, too.

For those who may be getting a bus from Canning Town, when the DLR is not running, aside from any rail replacement buses, I have now discovered that there is a more direct bus than the 300 from there to The Excel.

The 147 goes right along Victoria Dock Road, whereas the 300 just goes to the East End, and Prince Regent Station. I note that the timetable shows them running regularly and often, including at the weekend.

So in short, with rail replacement buses as well, there are three buses that should run from Canning Town on the Saturday/Sunday, and go to The Excel.

BTW I also note that the London Underground Map (which includes the DLR) was revised as of June 2012. This now shows the Emirates Airline between the 02 and The Excel and the DLR Woolwich Arsenal extension, which runs south of the Excel, and is presumably still open that weekend.

The Premier Inn hotel I have seen on a map is Londen Dockland, but that's for 'going together' not close to Barking.. Or am I looking wrong?

I see, thank you. I believe the F1, Premier Inn and the Accorr hotels are all in one building... Or they are neighbors..

I don't know if this has been mentioned, or it's any use to anyone, but if you are quite far and need to get to ExCel without the DLR, you can get the district line to Plaistow and get a 241 bus from outside the station which stops right outside Custom House (the stairs leading up to ExCel). It's how I used to get there when I lived in London and it only takes about 20 minutes, not including the actual waiting of the bus or traffic though so check that first!
I know that TFL sometimes doesn't mention it as an option but if you have a Travelcard it's all the same price and journey time so I thought I'd mention it just in case!

Happy travels!

Cancel your booking with Travelodge Woolwich and change it to Travelodge Excel, its within walking distance! You should be able to do this without any loss.

Kind of a stupid question, but how easy is it to get dropped off at he event? My wife's grandparents live about 9 miles south of ExCel and it would be very convienant to just get dropped off. Also, being American and not spending a lot of time in London, how much can I expect to pay for a Taxi for about 9 miles?

Thanks
