I walked from East India stop last time. You can basically follow the DLR.

Having said that, that was easier since it was running that day so I could hear it!

I think I walked it that day to save £2, so you can guess I'd never pay £15-20 for a cab  :D

Beyond any personal inconvenience, and i have no problem walking, I'm thinking of the (hopefully) large numbers attending who will be expecting to be taken straight to the venue, many of whom may not be familiar with getting around London as it is.

Last time I went to an event only accessible via DLR with large numbers of people, I think i had to wait 2 hours after the event to get the replacement bus as there wasn't enough to cope with the numbers but that was some years ago.

Yes, there are other ways to get there but it will cause problems for a lot of people.

There will be a replacement bus service from Canning Town for the same price as a ticket (if past experience with closed tracks is anything to go by). There's no reason to worry!

I think most (if not all) London busses will accept a tube ticket valid in that zone anyway, unless I'm mistaken?

It is an inconvenience, as most London transport works/closures are, but as long as people try and prepare beforehand and work things out, that will minimise any problems.

Why are people fretting about the DLR? RELAX. This is London.

You can take a Taxi, A bus, Walk...etc. Canary wharf is just a little bit away.

For taxis; there are mini cabs. Use them. cheap

Taxis and mini cabs in London are not cheap!

Maybe not from North London, but dam The whole Underground wont be shut. Get as close as possible and then get a mini cab. 15-20 pounds not expensive.

Might not be expensive for you but I'm flying to the event and my costs are high enough already! 15-20 pounds for a 1 mile taxi ride is bloody ridiculous! We'll have no option to walk as we'll have suitcases.

Funnily enough I am coming all the way from HONG KONG for this event. All im saying is, its a once in a lifetime event for some. Rather than worry about pennies (Parking, walking, taxi's...etc), better to figure how to save other ways. Example  (Less Smokes? Less Alcohol? Less petrol?...etc)

Yep considering I work in London and have to deal with this kind of inconvenience on a weekly basis, when things go wrong or works overrun etc, it's actually quite nice to have the opportunity to get clued up beforehand!

I went to an event at Excel once, when the DLR was not running, and the event laid on free buses for people attending the event. (Like what happens at Collectormania in Milton Keynes). Would there be any chance of this happening?

From recent experience, £15 will get you about 3 miles in a black cab (depending on traffic), and that's at the late at night rates. One mile in the daytime will be much cheaper.

There are walking maps on the Travel for London website. Haven't looked at them yet so I don't know how helpful they are.

For those worried about 1 mile walk from canning town. They will be a clearly defined rail replacement bus. Also you can get to within half mile walk by catching dlr to west Silverton which is on the line still open. you just to road across the station and keep walking straight up that road, keep following roads / path until reach dock, turn right and cross the bridge to the excel. Take 10 mins max.

Relax people. I live local to the excel, infact I went to school opposite it. If the DLR isn't running there'll be a rail replacement bus service. Although it isn't that far from canning town to the excel If your going dress up I advise you not to walk it since the area is quiet rough and if you're walking around in trek costume you'll most likely get mugged. There is a minicab office on the barking road 2 mins from canning town station a cab from there shouldn't cost more than a fiver.

Hope this helps

I'm from the Netherlands and it's all expensive enough as it is. 15 - 20 pounds for a 1 mile taxi-ride would've been fairly ugly!
Glad to hear it's probably quite a bit cheaper.

I don't mind a 1 mile walk myself, but I'm totally unformilliar in London, so that'll be fun :YAHOO:.

I've been doing some reading on a 'Oyster Card'.
This seems like a good way to travel right?!
I'm thinking of charging it with say 20 pounds and see how far that gets me :)

Edit: Ow, and remind me to get those English Pound thingies too :D. Jolly, so nice you all decided to join in on the Euro...

In my opinion (and looking on the map) Canning Town is nearby the Excel. We are coming from Barking, so the last 'piece' of the ride we'll walk (I think)
D.S.T.L. was Great!

Friday @ Opening Ceremony =
Our chair was a bit in the back, but never the less... I saw her on stage! (meeting Kate first)

Saturday @ Photoshoot Time =
Queue was long (was present @ the queue around 17.20, photo was taken around 18,45) , my number was 666, choke her hand & said "Hi" *flits* (meeting Kate second)

Sunday @ Guest Talk Time =
her talk was very nice (perhaps talking to Kate third)

They have buses acting as rail replacement so that's good news but I agree it's very bad timing sadly they always do this at weekends when there are exhibitions and conferences

I have one - 20 pounds easily get me through a year of Comic Con trips, and that included travel to and from Heathrow.

a 1 mile walk is nothing, i dont know why people are so worried. Also if you need to catch a taxi i am sure there are lots of people staying in the same hotel maybe you can all get together and split the taxi fare. Even if its £10 split between 4 people that is £2.50 so well worth it. Me and my husband will be walking from the new travelodge but if anyone staying there wanted to share a taxi then we would happily split the fare

Maybe just contact the hotel you're staying at and confirm the transport they recommend etc. I'm sure they will have travel info for their guests and they are likely to have had this situation before.  And considering the event is a few months away, should be possible to save a little more cash to cover cabs if needed?

A one mile walk is nothing to a fit and able-bodied person who knows where they are going and is confident in the environment. A quick flick through various posts will reveal numerous people who have mobility issues or other problems which would make a one one mile walk a daunting task. Also it's hardly the nicest part of London, and some folks not familiar with it may not be deperately happy or confident walking in an unknown area, especially if they are arriiving late in the evening and going to a nearby hotel. And even if you're fit and healthy, if you've just come on a long-haul flight and are pulling a couple of chunky bits of luggage behind you with a bag over your shoulder, a one mile walk is no fun - up and down kerbs (not all of which are dropped), over uneven pavements, trying to dodge the dog doodoo with your feet and your lugage, and all this after hours and hours of travelling - it can be a substantial PITA.
