Squishy
Is this the sort of event that you'll have to have your own friends for or do we mingle? xD Silly question, I guess... I'm 16 and I think I'm going with my mum is why I'm asking o.O As much as I love my mum, I probably won't be able to enjoy myself as much, as I'll (at the parties) be requesting 'Can you dance like a hippogriff?' over and over again so I can randomly flail about (I can't dance) to it's awesome... xD Also, I probably won't get her to dress up as someone with me so I'll be on my own, dressed as a HP character (Luna, probably) watching everyone have their own fun xP TALK ME THROUGH WHAT HAPPENS PLEASE!!! LisaMarie
Hey there! I'm Lisa, I'm 19, and I went to Muggle Mayhem 1 last August so I'm going to attempt to talk you through what happened at that (and other) convention. :) People tend to come to these events in all types of friendship groups... on their own, in pairs or with a group. However, there is lots and lots and lots of mingling (especially on the first day in all the pre-convention excitement) and you will meet tonnes of new friends at this event. Just introduce yourself to people and I'm sure they will be as excited to meet you as you are to meet them. I myself am going with one friend as I have done to every convention I have been too, however I've always come away with lots of new friends of people that I have met and hung around with at the event. Remember, we all share the same passion for Harry Potter (or whatever the event may be about) that is why we are coming! So it's likely that you will meet people who you get along with like a house on fire. Not everybody dresses up or 'cosplays' but lots of people try too! Haha. Turkfox (forum name) is the head of cosplay here so if you want information about that I'd recommend her to speak too. Personally, I'm going to be cosplaying Ginny for most of the weekend. :) The parties are, and will be, so much fun. Mad dancing with people dressed in various themes/costumes makes for a very interesting night! On a typical day (take Saturday for example) autographs and photoshoots will start at 9am and run for most of the day intermixed with talks with the guests, any activities that the organisers have up their sleeves (last year we did the tri-wizard tournament which was amazing) and breaks for lunch etc. These are organised by your programme/ticket number. Then there will be a break of a couple of hours in the evening followed by the party, which will be themed (showmasters will post on this forum when they have decided upon themes). Hope this has helped some what. If you have any other questions feel free to post them on here, the mods or any convention goer I'm sure would feel happy to try and answer them for you. See you there!

Draco Malfoy
ellow Squishy and welcome to the forums. Well I am a bit older but won't disclose my age here but I could be your dad if things had happened early for me LOL. Doesn't stop me going to MM2 so as I love the Harry Potter books and cosplay Draco since like ten years now. I am sure you will still have fun and your mum will probably have just as much fun. Usually at conventions there's people of all ages and they all just party together and are silly and have fun dancing like hippogriffs LOL I don't have my usual group as they live abroad, and some retired from cosplay due to family etc but I will attend with my friend. I think Lisa Marie has explained everything really well so hopefully see you and your mum there :-D

bewarethepossums
Hello! And welcome Firstly, I've seen loads of people at conventions (including Muggle Mayhem last year) with their mums so you definitely won't be the odd one out! And usually their mums had just as much fun :) Secondly, you needn't worry at all about not knowing anyone your own age as A] you'll get to know lots of us mad HP fans on the forum beforehand (I know plenty of people even share rooms at conventions with people they've met on the forums) and B] everyone there is really really friendly, not to mention excited, so don't be at all scared to just talk/introduce yourself to random people. Thirdly, I can vouch for the insane amounts of crazy flailing that went down last year for hours on end. Even some of the guests joined in! Squishy
Right, so it turns out my mum MAY be going on holiday the weekend of the convention, so it's either I get my best friend to come with me or I go alone. Thanks to you lot I'm actually happy to do either :) Before, I wouldn't have DREAMED of going by myself but now I have confidence Thank you It doesn't take much to convince me to do something, you may have noticed xD
Moderators DavidB Posted July 16, 2010 Moderators Share Posted July 16, 2010 I went to my first ever event alone in 2003. Now I'm here with all my best friends being from these events I wish I'd joined the forum before I'd gone, as that would've been an advantage. You're definitely doing the right thing, and it'll help a lot if you get to know people on Facebook or other things too
elwebb
I think everyone else has covered everything, just remember u have at least one thing in common with everyone there - we're all harry potter fans! So start random conversations with people about all things potter and i'm sure you're make friends pretty quickly :) And like DavidB said if u can talk to people on Facebook before hand as well that helps :)
Squishy
Thanks for the help!!!! I'm not a very independent person and my mentality is usually: If I don't have anyone to go with, I CAN'T go... I'm easily persuaded to do stuff apparently because I'm actually really excited to go by myself now! All because a couple of people said that I can x') I'd still love for my best friend to come with me, though, because she's a massive HP fan as well and it'd be so much fun! I need to force her to come so we can both meet you all! You sound so nice and friendly <
