Dukedwarfer
Hi Jason To be honest I think the dates are far too close for an event like this to work. I have gone to countless RD conventions over the years and the most fundamental thing that is always there is notice to the fans. Without this its hard to make something like this come off. As soon as I saw that you were running an event like this I was very exited, but then saw how close it was and instantly knew that I and my friends would not be able to attend, simply due to the short notice. However, if your going to make an event like this work you must fundamentally get an advert on Red Dwarf official website. There is no better advertising than this. Many people know that your conventions are good and well organised, something that lacks at other conventions, which is why something like this would appeal to lots and lots of RD Fans. You probably know the rest – You need more guests, although its common knowledge that many of the big names are not available on these dates which doesn’t help. I really think an event like this will be huge, given a full guest line up and more than a month and halfs notice and if you do go ahead with this one then a good crowd comes in as your always going to get the ‘regulars’ At the moment you have nothing ‘special’ to promote the convention, other than the reasonable price. The words ‘Full cast re-union’ or ‘Special 20th Anniversary event’ would help, but what would help the most is more time to promote it! That’s how my years as a RD verteran. 10 years ago I saw 600+ at a RD Con. Last year there were 120 (and that was with 9 months notice). I know that Showmasters can get the numbers up but time is your enemy here. I wish you all the best my friend. DUKE
Lizzy
SM, my bro's neighbour actually used to work for Red Dwarf if you want me to pass a message on to her? I'd love to go, but I'm in my bro's hands, cos I won't be able to drive or train it that weekend, cos I'll be on crutches, so I'll need his help for a lift. Bit more notice woulda been better for me too Though get Craig Charles or Rob L and I'll get a taxi there hehe!
Zippy1701
HI SM Looking forward and got my tickets booked. More guests would help, but I think the notice is a killer. Most of my friends can't make it althouth I will keep trying.

Dukedwarfer
At the end of the day the best way to advertise is by getting guests. At the moment, with almost only a month to go, there is only 2 guests announced, both of which have been to every Red Dwarf con in the last 8 years, so there is nothing unique about this event. What would attract ticket sales is a full cast line up, but that just isnt going to happen at this short notice - Plus people just are not going to be available anyway. Im mega surprised Showmasters have gone with this, as there is no way it can be a success, its just impossible.

dufresne
Well I have booked I can't understand how much notice people need. Either you want to go, or you don't ! If you don't want to go (or can't), fine. If you do, make what arrangements you need and commit to support the event. Time off work, travel, accommodation, family committments - what's the difference in arranging these at six months notice, and doing it at six weeks notice ? If you will be abroad on holiday at the time, or recovering from an operation, or for some reason definitely cannot attend, that's fine - but can we stop the doom and gloom please ? It's an opportunity for a great event, based on a fantastic show. The RD fan club events are always good fun, but in all fairness to them, they are amateurs compared to SM. I don't think they would consider that an unfair comment ? SM have shown with Eclipse and (to a lesser extent) Lockdown that they can run fantastic SPECIFIC events - and they thought of that happening for "my" show" is fantastic !! If you are a Red Dwarf fan, and you want to enjoy this event (and hopefully make it annual) then get your fingers out and book. SM are not going to book a full cast with too few tickets sold - basic maths. BUY TICKETS AND THEY WILL BOOK GUESTS !! Yes time is short - SMs have publicly admitted that on here - but we as punters have the power to solve that as much as SM do !! The online shop is right here. Lizzy
Aaah Troi, edit your post- Don't mention other organisers on here! They don't allow it on their forums, its the same here or recovering from an operation,

S1J0
Hey..I am not able to come, but I have spread it around and there are people interested. All I can say to those commenting about the short notice and what SM should have done, the more negativity there is the less likely people are to book. Let's all help make the best of a less than favourable time scale. Anyway, it is not how many guests that are in attendance, but the actual convention itself. I have been to conventions with only 4 guests (none of them what some people would call A Listers) and they made it a wonderful event. Keep Dwarfing Dudes.... TerraHawk
what's the difference in arranging these at six months notice, and doing it at six weeks notice ? Depends quite a bit if you're doing as cheaply as possible; I tend to get what Trains I can sorted two months in advance. Indeed the cheapest Trains for LF&CC are now up, but there aren't enough guests to interest me yet. Might be too late time they are.
mindy123
Hi, I have posted this everywhere too! Can I ask a question as a convention newbie? When will we find out the party themes? does some info get sent out before the actual event? I don't own much in the way of fancy dress at the moment!! Zippy1701
Good question. I am also a newbie and had assumed that it would be RD themes. Over to you SM for an answer!!!!!!

I agree with stopping the doom and gloom, but some people like my fiance, have to give at least 6weeks notice for any holiday that he wants, an if just one person is off that day (out of the 9 on his shift) then he can't have the day off. Also he doesn't get sick pay so would loose like £70-£80 if he took the day off sick, so for some people it can be very hard to arrange things like this with such short notice. Not everyone can get time off just like that.. LLAP Edited June 2, 2008 by zebredy
Lizzy
It would be great to hear from SM about all this... I posted weeks ago that I could get in touch (easily) with someone who actually worked with the show, but I'd obv need permission first, but SM seem to have overlooked all posts in this section I really hate those who complain about lack of guests or info for complainings sake, but this seems more lacking than Lockdown was at this point... tbh I don't mind- I'd rather it was postponed, as I don't think I can make it now anyway (due to having a broken right foot and no one to drive me!) but I was going to beg beg beg someone for a lift even for a day, but only if perhaps there were a few more guests or something... meh, I dunno :S
BondageBarbie
I would love to have gone to this (it's only my favourite TV show ever!) but I couldn't afford it after buying my Hub ticket. That said, the lack of guests at this point is a bit disappointing. If it was to be postponed I'd probably have some cash for a ticket by the time it was rescheduled...
