awf
from the start the show at glasgow just seemed to be a rush job after promising the show was to be held it took an age to get any proper info about it the advertising wasnt enough to do the show any justice yes there is a limited maket shopwise( in glasgow) that would display leaflets but even for people outside glasgow from the borders to aberdeen radio clyde not available how were these people reached i attended all the shows that were held in the secc by the other company was always busy i turned up at for early bird entry there were about 12 folk waiting ,went to whsmith came back and got straight in it seemed to me they would have cancelled it and hoped nobody complained to much about it the guests were poor they did say they were going to build it up which is a fair point but i see the midlands show has better guests for its first one must be they only only have to build shows up in scotland
JacknDaniel
This has already been discussed to death. Showmasters have said after the event that it was one of their most successful first events, and they are already aiming to make a bigger and better one this year, and the event was over 4 months ago, whats the problem? Moderators DavidB Posted January 3, 2008 Moderators Share Posted January 3, 2008 Yep - the fact that the Glasgow show was successful as it was kinda proves that SMs approach to it was wise. Granted, it's not going to appeal to everyone i.e. regular con goers that are happy to travel around everywhere (for example), but obviously a lot of people up there were happy with the way it was. As with every show, no doubt SMs are aiming to improve each time, but whether that happens or not is always a matter of personal opinion. And there's not much point comparing the Glasgow event to (1) other organisers and (2) other SM events. There is no basis for comparison really. gebes
The midlands show, admittedly has better guests, because it's closer to an already established market for these types of event. It all comes down to advertising the event, and that is NOT just up to Showmasters to do, they're not local to Glasgow, so probably don't know the best places to advertise. As I've said before , if us Scottish folk want an event comparable to say GMEX , then we have to promote the hell out of the event, and go to the event even if there's not a guest you want to meet. monkeyking
i'm just wondering on some of the other event forums it has a notice saying more guest announced on friday 8pm for shows in 2008 why doesn't glasgow have that notice?
JacknDaniel
I suppose they're just focusing on the closer shows primarily. Im more concerned about Lockdown!
awf
in reply to some of the comments on the my topic scotland does not have much experience with these type of events they held 4 or 5 mems they had a comic and card fair regular always well attended might have been good for hosts but a number of the dealers who i spoke to said the samething they werent making many sales the last one at gmex dealer nos were down a lot more spaces the midlands isnt that far away from mk or even manchester why not go for newcastle area
TommyT
the midlands isnt that far away from mk or even manchester why not go for newcastle area This was mentioned elsewhere. I don't know the exact reasons, but some figures I cam up with here http://showmastersonline.com/forums/index....t&p=1145169 might have some impact on the argument. (By contrast, the entire Glasgow conurbation covers about 2.3 million people. Throw in the 450,000 who live in Edinburgh, about 45 miles away, and Glasgow probably has twice the population that Newcastle does within 50 miles). firefly9
Being under 18 and living in Scotland I found it impossible to persuade my parents to let me travel to England on my own for a convention but as soon as the Glasgow one popped up, my dad drove me himself. Now because they've seen how well events like that one are handled they're letting me fly down to London to attend one there. I'm very glad the Glasgow one went the way it did and now I get to meet some of my favourite actors at the end of the month.
filmcell
I think the problem with the first show was advertisements and promotion. We had a stall and will have a stall in 2008. It was busy but with shoppers from the centre . I don’t think there was many true fans or Collectables hunters at the event. I do believe that the 2008 show will be a lot better with better promotion and advertising . At the end of the days it was the first in Glasgow and i think it went well. As did suggest to one of the organisers to offer a discount if we advertised the show on our website.. No feedback yet from them.
teroknor34
the last one at gmex dealer nos were down a lot more spaces Actually the hall space was bigger this time so the aisle were made wider. Used to go to the events at the SECC & the last two I went to were very quiet indeed. The dealer I was working with at the time decided to just concentrate on the other venue instead. I do believe that the 2008 show will be a lot better with better promotion and advertising . At the end of the days it was the first in Glasgow and i think it went well. I know the 501st were doing some promotional stuff in 2007 for the event in the shopping centre for two days the weekend before but apart from being involved with them I really didn't hear much else about the event. More advertising wouldn't go wrong!
Showmasters Admin showmasters Posted February 14, 2008 Showmasters Admin Share Posted February 14, 2008 i have addressed some of these point before but it takes time and dedication to build something good, we have the dedication but the time takes time i am afraid supporting this show and spreading the word and getting fliers of us to give out it will only help make the event grow bigger faster so if you want to help the event do get in contact with us We invested more in the last show in Glasgow than any other event held there before other than World Con and in add terms we spent over £15,000 just on local news paper adds let alone Radio but one thing about advertising is people never see all we do or how much go's into promoting the show so just because you do not see all we do, do believe us when we say we do a lot behind the scenes i do think we all need to work together to put on a bigger and better show in Glasgow this year so spreading the word to as many people you can will help a lot, putting links on you sites is very help full. but to address "filmcell" we cannot offer a discount on tread space as we work out the price on dealer space on a very small profit and every penny we get in from the dealers we put back into the promoting the show which helps you guys in the end we make the price as cheap as we can to give all the dealers a chance to make money. but you putting the info of the show on your site only helps to let people know the show is on and attracts more people to the show, which helps you in the end so if you are happy to do this for us it will help us both in the end, and we thank you for anything like this you can do. i will say A1 comics do for us already and work hard for us in Glasgow but I would also like to thank all dealer's for thare faith in us and for supporting us and we will see you all in August Jason
