And it was dark.
He knew the darkness was coming, he just hadn't known it would be so soon.
He was glad he'd had his life. He was glad he'd shared it with those around him, even Malfoy. They had despised each other from their first year, since their very first class together. But they had been in each other's lives at the same time, never able to completely escape each other, not until Malfoy left the school.
But for all that had happened, in those five years, he'd made sure to exact his revenge on Malfoy, and he had made sure to take extra for the pains that Malfoy, and Malfoy's family, had visited upon his own friends and relations. Sirius Black. The Weasleys. The Longbottoms. The Potters. And even more, for he had, beneath his bumbling exterior, kept careful count of every act of superiority that Malfoy had pursued. Even the bullying that had gone on against those of other houses was tracked, through his network of ears, some not even realising that he had heard them and learned their secrets.
Some of that network joined him - those who had realised what he was planning, those who had realised he needed support, or he would go into trouble that only the entire wizarding world, fully trained and masters of the combat arts, might have had difficulty escaping.
They helped him plan, helped him enforce subtlety, even helped him expand his network into all the halls of power, both Light and Dark.
He'd killed Malfoy in the end, because of subtlety - he was able to fool him into walking down the paths of darkness, into deeper darkness than he had ever known.
But he'd forgotten about the other one. The other Slytherin, who was even deeper into the darkness, who had learned to control the darkness, even when he had been a student.
He heard himself scream. Scream for hours. Just like his parents.
At twenty-five years of age, the last sound that Neville Longbottom heard was his former tutor, using the same words as he had used to first address him, during their first potions lesson together.
"Idiot boy!" snarled Snape, just as he cast the Killing Curse, from behind Neville, plunging him into darkness.
