The bright sun blared inside Number Four Privet Drive. It was like any other morning as a woman by the name of Petunia Dursley fixed up a variety of breakfast foods for her brilliant husband, Vernon, and one-year old son, Dudley. A knock at the front door alerted her that the post had arrived. Drying her hands on a clean paper towel, she bustled obediently to the door. She opened it with a polite smile, her hand outstretched for her mail, but instead she found an extremely puzzled and uncomfortable postman holding a blanket.

“Ma’am?†He stuttered, clearly confused about what he should say in a situation like this.

“What have you got for me today, sir?†she pursed her lips slightly at his lack of composure. She had expected him to just hand her the bills and letters and the like, but insted he was making quite a scene and the neighbors would surely see.

“T-There was a… a child left on your doorstep,†he managed to choke out.

“Pardon? A what?†her eyebrows rose skeptically.

“I child – a boy!†To prove this, a small choke of a cry broke the silence and the face of a tousled, black haired child made itself known.

Green eyes. It had green eyes. Lily’s eyes.

“Is this some kind of a joke, sir?†her ears turned red with rage and embarrassment.

“I swear to you, I’m not–â€

“Give me him!†Petunia snatched the boy from his arms and pushed him back. “Don’t come near my family again! You’re one of them, aren’t you? Those freaks!â€

“Ma’am, please!â€

“Get off of my property! Now!†she slammed the door in his face promptly, and leaned against the door, breathing heavily in an emotion she couldn’t read. Suddenly, as if the world had turned its volume up, Harry’s cries entered her ears. “Hush, now.†Her voice was calm and soothing, like the tone she used when comforting Dudley. His eyes were Lily’s beautiful emerald green, although drowned in tears. She lovingly wiped his unruly hair away from his forehead, touching the lightning-shaped cut with care.

Her heart dropped to her stomach as she realized what she was doing. This was Lily’s child. Her perfect sister’s perfect child. Envy prickled in as she sat on Dudley’s favorite rocking chair, moving it back and forth.

“Don’t cry now, love,†she cooed.

“Mama!†he wailed, anguish evident in his tiny voice.

She hummed him to sleep with much care. She knew once Vernon woke up, she’d never be able to properly love this child, so she took her time giving him all the love that she couldn’t give him for the next ten years.
