From the Ashes

Harry took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. It fogged up the cold air around, and blurred his glasses. He took them off and wiped them on his cloak.

With a trembling step, he passed through the main gates of Hogwarts Castle, for the first time since he had left the school at the end of his Sixth Year.

Even from the very edge of the grounds, there were signs that Hogwarts was no longer the happy place of his adolescence. Great scorch-marks streaked the once-beautiful lawns, left untended since Hagrid’s departure.

Lights still flickered in the windows across the whole castle, testament to its continued use. Harry felt his eyes drawn to the top tower, to where Dumbledore’s office had once been. No light shone there now.

Harry didn’t take the path up to the Main Door into the Entrance Hall. This was not a social occasion… He had a mission to do. He had found the answer in a large, heavy book, deep in the Department of Mysteries, and knew it to be the only real option left. A risk worth taking!

The White Tomb stood on the hillside by the Great Lake, and shone in an eerie green glow, as light from the moon and castle was reflected in the lake water. Harry approached the Tomb with some trepidation. It was the nearest he had been to it since Dumbledore’s funeral, and even now, he felt a lump rise to his throat knowing that Dumbledore had sacrificed himself for no good reason. ‘Perhaps’, Harry thought, ‘that was the mark of a truly great wizard?’

Harry stepped onto the little dais that ran around the edge of the tomb, and slowly he trailed his fingers across the etched symbols and runes engraved in the white marble. His thoughts drifted again to Dumbledore, and as Harry climbed swiftly to the flat cold surface of the tomb, and lay back against the letters “Here lies Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore†he thought of all the times he had been brave and courageous at Dumbledore’s bidding.

The chant to invoke the deep magic of the tomb echoed as Harry whispered them. A fire of red, green, blue and yellow flames ten foot in height engulfed the tomb. He clenched his eyes tightly shut, and waited for the pain to be over... for the darkness to descend.

As the flames died down, a small scrap of parchment, ripped from an old book, was caught in the wind, and settled some feet away.

It read “And from the ashes of the innocents, the phoenix will rise again, and the phoenix will restore the world to its former glory!â€
