I think asking where guests are staying is stepping over the mark if you intend to wait to get free autos etc.

These people are just that.... people!!!

They do a job that is in the public eye and also very long hours. They may get good payment but money does not mean a good life. An instant example is the present court case in the States of the alleged Catherine Zeta Jones stalker. It has gone on and on and it is not even the proper court case yet. And now the fiancee of the accused as said she confirmed to him that Michael Douglas seduced her!!!

This is what people have to put up with and why convention/event organisers will put the guests in hotels along way away from the event itself.

Father Coop....you ain't stalking me in my free time!!
I agree that searching out where they're staying is over stepping any mark, but I'm not sure about your comment about them being 'just people'....

'Just people' don't require bodyguards, 'just people' don't get £25 for their signature, 'just people' don't get the same level of treatment...

These people (generally) are paid to be at an event, and as a result, some of their privacy is lost. Maybe it's fair, maybe it's not, but it's the so called price of fame. (That said, when the event is over, it's game over!)

If they've got any sense, they'll roll with it, play along with their fans, meet people, try and have fun and not get upset when someone asks them for an autograph whilst they're in the toilet (I was at a convention a few years back when this happened!)

OK, show me one star who has signed a contract that says 'I have no right to privacy, anyone who wants to can take a picture of me any time they want, I have no right to refuse an autograph or photo.  I will put the demands of fans, however rude they are, before those of myself and my familly and friends at all times, 24/7 365 days a year' etc etc and maybe I'll believe that argument.  But you can't can you?

Their job is to act.  They want to do a good job, give people pleasure and be admired for it.  Their job does not include being hounded by oiks like you. (And you know it!  You even said yourself Harrison changed hotel because he didn't want to be hounded!) You are just giving yourself an excuse to be selfish and rude.

365 days a year, no, absolutely not... at a convention or event... no, not even then, the celeb ALWAYS has the choice to refuse any request for any reason they like. They just have to put up with the negative publicity afterwards, not to mention the possibility that they won't get asked to events in future.

Again, this is a two way street. No amount of money gives a person the right to do what they want.

The stars know the score, but also have the right to privacy. When they are at their hotel on their own time they have the right to privacy.

Also, have the ever read the sign in an entrance to a club or concert hall etc??

"THE MANAGEMENT RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ADMISSION" etc etc etc

Yes, the stars are in this for the fame and money. But there is no way they have to or shold be expected to give up their lives.

Yes, as fans, we help them make their money. But, and this is an awfully large but (not yours BEX ;)), that does not mean we get to say and do what we want to them.

They are people doing a job...nothing more..nothing less..

How would you feel if one fo the stars came into your workplace and started being rude and ignorant...would you reserve the right to not serve them?

Even before Gordon Ramsey did Hell's Kitchen he wasn't shy in chucking out a famous actress from his restaurant as she was using the "Don't you know who I am line!!!"

Father Coop...get off my land!!! I am famous!!!

Yeah, they have the right to privacy in their own room. If someone went to the hotel and knocked on their door for an autograph, I'd expect the hotel to truf the intruder out.

A chance encounter in a public place is slightly different though and I think acceptable behaviour depends on the circumstance.

For example, I saw a British TV star eating with his family in a restaurant a year or so ago. I ntoiced him, smiled to him and let him get on with it. To approach would have been innapropriate in my book.

A couple of weeks ago, I was sat in a bar at lunch when I saw the MK Donds first time going out for lunch. A few kids stopped them and they happily gave autographs. Does that make it poor form? No, the players had the right to refuse, but it wasn't in their interest to do so, instead, being good sports gained them some more fans and a decent rep (in my eyes anyway).

As for your job anaology... I work in a payroll department. We get abusive people call us from time to time, but we don;t refuse to pay them because of it! So no, I wouldn't reserve the right not to pay them!!

Chance encounters are a whole different matter as I met Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson in Neighbours) in my home town and said hello. If I had had a pen and paper I would have asked, but I just asked if he was there working or on holiday (he was directing a project locally).

As regards being a Paroll dude, that was my first real job and it is amazing how helpful I would be to nice workers but how forgetful I could be to the rude ones. I never messed with their wages, but their call out bonuses/meal allowances were sometimes temporarily forgotten !!! Evil, but it is stupid to piss off the man who controls your wages....

Father Coop...don't mess with the Padre!!!

I am also a "hardened" Auto collector.

I am also a fan.

If you can't afford to pay for the auto at the event, you either have no money or are more likely a dealer just trying to get a free auto so you can sell it on to a real fan. Are you one of the "collectors" who  "Boo" at a celeb at a premiere if they don't sign for you?

I for one feel better having celebs who are at a place to sign. If you have to pay so what? You still get the auto and you know you haven't disturbed the celeb.

For those who don't collect outside events let me explain. It's the dealers that cause stars to stop signing autos at all. Imagine the same few faces that turn up at a stage back door night after night and if the celeb  dosen't sign they usually get heckled. These signitures are then sold to dealers for around £5 - £20 and then charged to you for ££££££. Alison Hanigan got very annoyed signing for a while outside her play because of one dealer who was turning up before and after performances every day for autos so s/he could make money on them.

I've had these people boasting to me on how they sneaked in through a back door of a charity signing so that they wouldn't have to pay. These people are SCUM.

Sometimes I'm asked at premieres "do you know which hotel Mr X is staying in" or "Where's the after show party". You know then that the person is usually a dealer or someone looking to sell autos to a dealer.

I for one only do "official" events as a rule (Theaters, Premieres, Cons, award ceremonies, Signing events like Collectomania.) and though I have donated a few autos have never sold one on at a profit.

As for talking and sharing info thats a different site and is definitely not a tool for dealers to make fans lives any harder.

This thread is disrespectful to the celeberities. It's disrespectful to SM (the organisres) and it's disrespectful to the proper fans/ autograph collectors. It also shows you up as being cheap.

I understnad that people cannot afford to get all the peoples autographs that they want at one event - for example I got Nick and Billy Boyd and could only afford one of the Trio.  I would never of gone up to them at lunch to complete the set.

I am a massive Movie fan and have been lucky enough to meet the likes of Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Peter Jackson, Ian Mckellen and Jude Law at Film Premieres etc but I would never invade their personal space.  Although these people ARE on TV they do deserve some alone time to have a bite to eat and a drink!!!!!

I read what Basil said about Alyson Halligan and I have to agree,
When I met her outside the play she was doing in London - she would only sign one autograph per person and one man got rather upset when he heard this.

Also, I met Alan Rickam recently and he does not do non personalised autographs as he knows that "Dealers" sell them on Ebay

Another one is Ewan Mcgregor who very rarly signs photos from Star Wars for that same reason

Thanks Dealers you are ruining this for us genuine movie/TV loving public

I have got to agree with everything Basil says there.

Just because people are famous, doesn't mean that you should stop respecting them, and bother them at inappropriate times.

Plus, it's always dealers who get annoyed when we (crew) don't let them have 18 autographs, and have a rant at us, instead of understanding that we're fans here to meet the stars than make money. No-one likes them, not the celebrities, because they know the dealers and know they're out to make a quick buck.

Take yesterday... Nat Lees was asked to sign 100 autographs by someone, unfortunately he was VIP so he neither got charged nor could Nat refuse, but you knew he wasn't a real fan like us who would go home and put it on his wall, he'll go and sell them somewhere.

Collectormania is a fan-organised event for fans, and unfortunately also attended by dealers with no respect for guests but instead an eye on their bank balance.
