Dedicated Game of Thrones event?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

What do people think about he possibility of SM/ME organising a dedicated Game of Thrones signing event/convention? Virtually all of the upcoming shows have significant GoT guests, demonstrating a certain degree of faith on SM/ME's part in the popularity of the show. I know there are smaller dedicated GoT events which do go on but I would be intrigued at the sort of guest line-up which could be possible, especially given the presence of Peter Dinlkage at LFACC this year.

Any thoughts?

That's not how it works though. They wouldn't stop getting GOT guests at other events for a start. It'd only be one date and limits availability.

Plus unless it's main cast, there's no guarantee a con would sell well enough. Get a few to a signing event and people are happy to meet them as they're probably already attending anyway. Exclusive events are completely different.

I'm sure it's crossed their minds but it's not as simple as 'yes do one because it'll get rid of them elsewhere!' .. There's really no need for the rude comments from a lot of people. We're all into our own things.. Just get on with it and enjoy those rather than slagging off the stuff you don't like. It's very simple.

I'd certainly not want GoT guests to be withdrawn from other events as, to your point David, it makes excellent business sense for SM to have GoT guests at shows someone who might not otheriwse attend and who then may spend on further autographs etc. Just wondering where the threshold sits... at what point does a fandom become commercially viable enough to warrant a dedicated show??

The thing that sparked my post was the sheer volume of GoT characters... with the exception of Bean and Heady, none of the actors are what you might call 'unobtainable' so for the die hard, a dedicated event with SM/ME's guest-booking contacts and power would allow lots of guests to attend a one-off show.

Clearly, that's a selfish viewpoint from me but I just thought it was worth discussing...

Keep up the good work SM, It must be very hard to please everyone all the time. Personally I would like to see guests from every thing around, If you like the guest then pay to see them. The more guests the better if they are available, you never know you may never get them again.. Something that was mentioned on here before. Many of these stars cross over into different shows, so getting them now is good... Except for my bank balance.. (Think I need a pay rise)

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS, Keep the guests coming....

I am always surprised to see how busy the smaller GoT guests are at signing events. Certainly it would well be that David has correctly summed up the situation; people are happy to meet and collect autographs from the guests if they are at an event anyway but would not bother with going to an event that is only GoT based.

Well firstly I hate the term 'real fans' .. but if we're going to refer to that, are there enough 'real fans' to sustain a con? Plenty of things have 'real fans' but don't work as specific cons.

I'd love a GOT con but one's already failed elsewhere, and plenty of guests have already been to signing events so would people sign up for the same ones? Who knows. If they struggle to get others then we'd be stuck with ones people have already met.

Sorry Queen_Sindel, i thought I had been careful too! No offense intended.

I tihnk the issue would be that for a weekend event people would want main cast, and they are (as their prices at LFCC show) expensive. So in order to make an event viable a lot of tickets would have to be sold and sadly it does not appear that a GoT only event does sell enough to cover those costs.

I disagree......real fans of the show would support it.

Unfortunately the size of the GoT "viewing" fan base doesn't reflect in ticket sales for weekend events. There are a couple of regular GoT only events in mainland UK and in Belfast but the average attendee number is around 200 tops and an event planned in Italy this year managed to sell just a handful of tickets even with 1 main cast member announced.

I personally would definitely go to a GoT con. I don't think you need main cast members to sell tickets, although I know it helps. I actually find that the 'smaller' guests are usually more fun at these one-show cons.

I know there is another company (I WON'T SAY WHO!!!) running a GoT con, but frankly they're rubbish! SM/ME are definitely the best cons around, so I would much prefer to go to a ME con, even if they didn't pull as many (or as big) guests. With ME you get more for your money, and they are much better organised.

Well, that's just my personal opinion - you know you'd sell one ticket at least!

If there is a Sherlock event I don't see why there can't be a Game of Thrones event as well.

That was exactly my reasoning too asI was reading this. With so many of the stars being British as well, I'm sure a good guest turn out could be had.

If there was a got event would b really good to be held in Belfast as it's partly film there

Again really think convention should be held in Belfast cause people could also go and see locations from show while here, actors are already here and belfast holds a show each year showing all props and it always packed out.

In light of the fact that Sherlocked has just announced that it will host another event next year in the UK and USA I see absolutely no reason why a GOT event couldn't happen? I believe that Game of Thrones is as popular as Sherlock maybe even more so and even with the lesser lead actors this would be a very successful event in the UK especially London.

I hope it becomes a serious consideration.

Well SM have shown that they have the chops to pull off a dedicated major show con and do it well too - you never know.

To do them on that scale they have to be official events though; that can take a lot of negotiations with the production company concerned.
