I started going to signing events to meet people I REALLY admired. I couldn't believe my luck at meeting my heroes from TV and film. There are one or two TV shows I would meet ALMOST anyone from, but I know where to draw the line in terms of how minor the people are in relation to the production. Some of the guests announced are so minor and some of the suggestions are so numerous I just wondered; how many people are meeting / suggesting guests who are legends (in your opinion), and how many are just wanting to meet anyone from any show they have watched and liked? Are you meeting your heroes, or are you a completist who will meet anyone who is announced from a film or tv show you watched?

Do you see (for example) Todd Bridges and say "WOW, this is someone I have ALWAYS wanted to meet - I LOVED Diff'rent Strokes!!" or "Todd Bridges - cool. I used to watch Differ'nt Strokes and enjoyed it. Might as well meet him."

what a great topic!!

i sort of go for the second one.If i have seen a programme with them in i will go for it.

to be honest its embarrasing when everyone goes on about torchwood, heroes, buffy ect. as they have never appealed to me.Guess just dont have time for these things

when the likes of leslie phillips was announced it was the other way round...gotta meet!!

but as they say...its each to their own

When I was new to cons (and cos of the excitment and novelty) I'd meet almost anyone that starred in a DVD I owned just so I could have it signed, I don't do that now. I'm more strict about who I meet now and they have to be someone from a film I really dig.

To me the film(s) a guest has been in are more important than who or how famous they are.

A cross between the first and second one. I wouldn't like to meet just anybody because they've been in something I've seen, but they're not neccesarily people I've waited my whole life to meet either. I depends on what I'm into at the time.

I just like meeting folks who have been in films & TV shows I enjoy, although as the years have gone on (I think this my 6th year collecting) I have got picker and only meet those with bigger roles or are in major scenes.

I think it's often a case of signing events changing your opinion on who you should meet. You either go specifically to meet your TV/film heroes and then decide to meet all the others because it's such a rare opportunity, or you want to meet everyone cos it's too good to be true then realise you need to draw a line somewhere. The first Collectormania I went to I went completely over the top and met SO many people. Now I realise it was a bit of a mistake for me and just meet either people who I REALLY want to meet, or people from TV shows and films I REALLY like (either major or minor actors). Having said that, I don't really meet anyone who did not contribute in some noticeable way. So, although I'm happy Star Wars fans are getting to meet so many people from the films, I could not meet anyone who was just an extra.

You see what it's like at the Collectormanias - so many people are just interested in what they currently like. LOTR then after that's died down, Harry Potter. Or LOST, then moving onto Heroes. That's why, although that's their own choice, I am happy when long-term fans get rewarded. Like X-Files fans who didn't just like it as a passing phase and still enjoy it. Blake's 7 fans, or fans of any old show. People who are STILL into LOTR.

When i first started going id meet everyone i liked from a show, now i think along the lines of 'how major is the cast member and how much do i like them'. I think ive got a little tighter with money. I wont pay for a £20 sig from someone in one episode of a show i like, regardless if there huge in another show.

I think i also only go for certain shows as well. Like i'll meet mostly anyone from Buffy and Heroes but even though i like firefly, im only interested in meeting one or 2 people : )

I depends on what I'm into at the time.
I would never decide like that. I only meet guests I know I'll always appreciate, not ones I'm into "at the time"...trends come and go.

Which is why I said I wouldn't want to meet anyone just because they've been in something I've seen. You're right, trends do come and go, but so do personal tastes and preferences. Something I loved watching on tv as a child may no longer be something I'd want to meet the cast from, but I would have wanted to meet them when I was younger. Yet the idea of only meeting them because I'd always appreciate it wouldn't have been something that crossed my mind at the time...

That said, there are certain things I love that I can't ever see me not loving and those guests will always be at the top of my list. Looking back, my first post must have sounded really faddy. I didn't mean it to sound like I was only interested in what's popular at the time; I'm not the sort of person who jumps on any new bandwagon! All I meant was that there are just lots of things I like and I can't be enthusiastic about all of them all the time. My personal taste at any one time doesn't necessarily follow the current popular trend. Does that make sense, or do I now sound even more unclear? :P

It really ranges from the OMG! Legend! The sort of person that we have several times over in our movie collection (i.e. John Hurt). To the ooh, I love that programme and I'd quite like to meet said person.

On the other hand there's the completest side of me who has to get the main cast if I start a film poster. Example being Serenity, I love it, my Husband hates it, but totally appreciates the fact I'd like to meet all the cast. Same goes for Torchwood.

I think when something you enjoy has an ensemble cast it's nice to meet them all for their own merits and moments.

I can understand that. There are certain people I would love to meet because of their acting talent or wide range of roles, but I also meet the casts of shows I like. Star Trek and it's spin-offs, Blake's 7 etc. I maybe only know the actors from that specific show, and they may not be my favourite actor or character in it, but I want to complete the collection. However, I don't usually go for anyone minor. I will get the Torchwood cast's autos, but not the people who went to C13. I will meet Indy characters like Marion, Belloq, Sallah, Professor Ox, but none of the others going to LFCC. Unless they play a significant role in it. I won't meet general stuntmen, but would meet Vic Armstrong.

A few of those choices could be true. I mainly meet them because they have been in a TV show or film that I really like (Buffy, Angel, Heroes, Star Wars are the one I usually go for).

Sometimes the fancy them answer is true though

I used to meet long time favourites - something that I still do - and anyone from favourite films and shows of the moment. Now I am alot more selective and specific about who I meet and what I get signed.

It depends on how much money i have for each show.

I have met people that i wasnt a MASSIVE fan of, but really really enjoyed meeting.

Actually i usually have better conversations with them, because if i love them too much i cant seem to speak lol

It's a mixture between one and two really. Big names (money with-standing) I'll try and meet all the time. Otherwise, if I know who they are then I'll go see them, even if I haven't seen them in something per say, if I recognise them that's cool.

Am I the only one here who honestly doesn't know? It started as something I wanted to do once for a bit of a laugh... and it never got any deeper. I really enjoy them and I never bothered to question my own motivations...

God I'm shallow!

That's an expensive thing to do "just for a laugh" :D

Yep - it started that way but now I just enjoy it a lot. I guess I just don't analyse my motives much - if I enjoy it I keep doing it. And I pretty much always enjoy it (guests cancelling on the day aside...).

I do know that I (generally) prefer TV actors to film actors as they are the ones that you see more of and want to ask the questions of.

So far I've just gone to meet the people who are a part of the movies etc that I really love and grew up with. This is in part due to student financial restraints, though...as my disposable income increases I may well meet a wider range :firedevil:

First and foremost I've always been a big movie fan, remember going to see Christopher Reeve as Superman in the first movie when I was a little kid.

Autograph collecting kind of grew from that , I started by collecting autographs from my favourite film actors and actresses and then it kind of developed from there, starting going to Conventions for shows I liked, wrote to celebs through the mail, went to Premieres, went to signing shows and 20 years on I'm still doing it !

For me its a mixture of them really - there are people who have been in shows that I have watched my entire life over and over again that mean a lot to me, there are people who may have only been in a few things I've seen over the years but are so talented that I want to meet them just for that. Then there are people who are such a personality that simply meeting them is in and of itself an experience.

The question I ask myself when it comes down to it is: "Are you going to regret it in the future?" If 2, 5 or 10 years down the road you're thinking that you should have spent that extra £15 back in the day then do it. I'm not in it to have a huge massive collection of autographs - I'm in it to preserve (at least for myself) the memories from moments I have enjoyed, through extending those moments by meeting the actors who brought those characters to life. A risky proposition I know, but fortunately of the 39 I have met so far, they have all been gracious and kind.
