MacGyver

I've been a huge fan of the original and everything I have seen so far has been putting me off very strongly.

My mother - who has been following the old show on and off, but always thought it was kind of entertaining - thought I was trying to trick her with a trailer I had made myself when I showed her one of the remake.

Speaking of Stargate, I was actually having 200 deja vus with the new MacGyver. Recasting something with "younger and edgier versions." They used the names of characters I loved, slapped some "modern" backstory on them and bam... my own personal disaster. One of my friends even called it "blasphemy", and actually I am a bigger fan than she is.

Google the original Jack Dalton. Nothing left of my favorite sidekick. Instead the writers seem to have been big fans of the Sam Axe character from "Burn Notice" and decided the world needed an almost identical twin of him in another show. And don't get me started on Murdoc. I was so fascinated by Michael DesBarres' performance that I actually started teaching myself French because the episodes where on on French TV earlier than on German and I got tired of my eyed being glued to the screen and not understanding a word of what was going on. The new portrayal... I will stop now or this rant will never end.

Why oh why does each and everything has to be remade? Had they tried to build on the end of the original series and feature MacGyver's son that may have worked for me maybe. This "reimagination" does not.

Sorry, rant over. Meanwhile you probably regret asking.

I do think the son if macgyver route would have been a good way of satisfying the new and old fans. And TBH that's what I thought the concept was till I googled it.

I like it because it reminds me of the 90s series Bugs, which I miss. Now that would be nice to see a return or remake of...we never did find out what happened to ros and Beckett.

Well I liked the doctor who tv movie when everyone else hated it, so I'm kinda used to it.

But then I had those feelings about the three musketeers bbc series at first as it took the names from the books and then just completely ignored any of the story. But then once I stopped comparing I got to like it. I even cosplayed as a female version of feron.

The Musketeers are totally different for me, probably because it's a classical book this is based on and not a concept that originated with a TV show. The way the book was written I as a reader always took them on new adventures.

And for "classical" themes set in past history the telling of a story will always be influenced by whom wrote it down. So completely ignoring one set of chronicles is nothing new. Does that even make sense? That's my history major coming through I think.

It's tricky, especially when you love the original, whether it be a show or a book. There's no right or wrong really - look at Sherlock and Elementary, very different from each other but essentially the same, a modern adaption of the source material. Some love Sherlock and hate Elementary or vice versa. A lot of people loathe that Elementary dared do Watson as a woman, but that never bothered me.

I think Ghostbusters 2016 would be the ultimate example of this.

I'd like to combine Sherlock and elementary to make a hybrid show. Sherlock has forgotten its about solving the mystery and not just Sherlock posing and showing off. Elementary is a little formulaic and needs a few twists and deduction.

But I'll still watch both.

Well Watson never bothered me in Elementary either. Now Ghostbusters however is a totally different story.

I don't especially like Lucy Liu but don't have an issue with the character and am very glad they have kept the relationship platonic because that would have been an easy route to take but they resisted, for the better.

I haven't seen the new Ghostbusters. I'm not bothered by the cast being women, if I don't like it it'll be because I thought it was rubbish but not because they are female.

I'm no hardcore Sherlock Holmes fan, I've only read 'A Study In Scarlet' but do plan on reading more at some point, but I'm a fan of both Sherlock and Elementary. I love Lucy Liu as Watson. Yes it's a different take on it, but she does the job of what Watson needs to be to Holmes, in my opinion, which is to try and bring him back to reality a bit!

Shelementary?

If Sherlock does come back it will go back to the format of the first couple of series I'm sure as they have dealt with all the outstanding questions and establishing stories so will go back to the basics of who John and Sherlock are and what they do.

I just realized how wrong I sounded. The cast being female is just part of the problem. It just doesn't work for me. Everyone is battling the legacy so hard trying to prove that this was not a mistake (and the cast being female is part of that issue) that they forget they actually have a movie of their own. It could have been way more enjoyable than it was for me.

I believe the current one will be the final season of Elementary, won't it?

Not sure to be honest. I haven't actually seen it for while as I'm waiting for the DVD's to get a bit cheaper. I've see up to halfway through season 3, but haven't heard any recent news about it. If they have decided to stop it, at least they can plan a good ending and go out strong.

That's what they had said, yes.

I think it's about time, it feels like there's nowhere really left for it to go.

Getting back on topic, I had no idea that there was a remake of MacGyver! From what's been said though, I'm not sure I'll be watching.

That wouldn't have helped I'm sure, I guess they knew a lot of people weren't going to be happy and like you said they decided to make a big thing of it to prove they were doing the right thing maybe. They could have done it with a lot less fuss and just concentrated on the story.

But such is Hollywood.

Going slightly off topic, the only real issue I had with Elementary was their version of Mycroft.

I know what you mean, but with there being Sherlock and the Robert Downey Jr films around, they were just trying to do things differently. I agree it didn't work that well though. For me the worst thing they did was the season with Kitty. I just didn't understand why she was there.

I'd say give it a go don't go by just the first episode. Its warming up as it goes along.

I'll see it one day I'm sure, I'm just not rushing to pay to see it so if it comes up on Netflix or on the TV I'll watch it with a open mind but I don't expect it to wow me either way

It's actually showing on freeview at the moment. ...at least I did see it one week in the tv paper on Wednesday at 9. Can't seem to see it now! :(

Daresay no matter how good they make a remake, no matter what the original is, there's always going to be a group that disagree with it for a, b and c. :( (Hope that doesn't come across wrong or patronising or anything, Wrong Name, wasn't meant to, sorry)

I get what you mean, we have a chap at work who goes off on one anytime he hears an old film is being remade arguing about it being unnecessary ect. I don't disagree but I do see why they do it. They know there's an established market for it in the old fans and they know a lot of younger people won't have seen the originals so will go and see it and hopefully that will lead to a financially lucrative full revamp. It's all about the money of course rather than protecting the integrity of what came before.
