My Day

I had a great day on the Saturday in Amsterdam. It didn't start off well with a flight delay and being put on the wrong train to get to the venue but was so happy when I arrived!

The place was packed but not over crowded, it was good to see some of the UK stalls there along with a large amount of local businesses. Netflix had a huge presence with a 'Netflix and Grill' van serving food and a massive stand in the middle with a few photo ops/activities that were great. As was the The Walking Dead photo op.

It was a shame that a few of the guests cancelled last minute but that's part of the con and I ended up meeting 6 guests total, all of whom were so lovely. My favourites were Ke Huy Quan, who was so nice and had a great chat about how he got the role in Indy, Sean Astin (I'll let the photo speak for its self! And Daniel Logan who was really chatty at his desk and so funny!

I flew back to the UK the same night which actually worked out well but was exhausted by the time I got home!

Here's a few pics of my day:

you got the link for those TWD photos? could not find them.

thank!

I found it by searching @walkingdeadnl on Facebook. I downloaded mine whilst at the airport last night but for some reason I can't find it now as the page doesn't seem to exist! I'll keep trying though and will post on here if I do find it. Sorry!

Ok, it looks like it's this page https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1186463648062488 but you can't access it outside of the Netherlands, I think. I can't see it in the UK anyway so I'm glad I downloaded the pic when I did!

If there's anyone who's not in the Netherlands and can't get the link to work, give a shout and one of us Dutchies will have a look for you?

that would be great as I cant get in!

I was wearing a shirt with "VAINSTREAM" on and have some tattoos around 16.00 on saturday.

thanks for any try!

ha ha, same thing happened to me on Friday as I got on the wrong train but thanks to some very helpful locals I got off at the stop just before the venue. Would have walked to the hotel quicker than waiting for the correct train. You walked by me on Saturday and I was going to say hello but I knew that you were just here for the day so I did not bother you. Will say hi to you at another event.

I'm glad it wasn't just me who found their train service confusing! Always feel free to stop me and say hi, even if you know I'm only around for a short time! It'd be great to meet you!

OK so I'm gonna tell you about *my* day - actually both of my days since I attended Saturday and Sunday. This is a lengthy tale, so if you're not into James Marsters you might wanna skip this post. In that case let me just tell you that I loved the weekend and am thinking about coming back next year. With a few little exceptions - well done, Showmasters!

Meeting James Marsters (MJM)– Amsterdam Comic Con – August 27./28. 2016

I've never been to a con. I've never met any of the celebs that I've had crushes on - actors, musicians, race drivers. So this was a first. I fell for James less than a year ago, but I fell fast, and hard. My good friend Karen in Australia is to blame for it because she, being a massive John Barrowman fan, made me watch Torchwood. And the moment John Hart stepped out of the rift, portrayed to perfection by James, I was lost. Since then I have watched every Buffy and Angel episode Spike was in - twice at least. Plus most other roles James played and probably every YouTube video there is. So I felt like I was prepared. Sort of.

I bought my ticket for Amsterdam Comic Con right after finding out that James would attend - when Chris Judge was added that was a great bonus for the Stargate fan I still am.

More planning: I had presents for James since it was only a week after his birthday and a little something for Mark Devine. I wanted my "Dragon Warriors" DVD signed and James' comic "Spike: Into the Light". Also I wanted James to sign and personalize a photo for Karen - since it's all her fault and stuff...

Without further ado: Meeting James Marsters in chronological order. With a little Chris Judge thrown in.

Day 1

Early Saturday morning (!) I was informed by Showmasters that Julie Benz would no longer attend the event, and later that morning that James would do the scheduled "Buffy panel" on his own. As much as I felt sorry for those who had been looking forward to meeting Julie, for me personally it simply meant more James time. Which can only be a good thing!

I arrived at the venue at 8:15 and joined the short line. At 8:35 my ticket was scanned and I got my armband.

At 9:00 sharp the doors opened and everybody went in. A minute later I was oriented and ready to get a VQ ticket for James. The crew member holding them didn't really know what she was doing but between her colleagues and me we sorted it out and I got this: #1!! Only nobody cared about VQ later which meant I got to keep it To be fair James' line was never as crazy as I'd expected so VQ wasn't really necessary.

Next step was the sales desk to purchase my Chris Judge photo ticket. The line didn't move at all but I met Rosie who I knew from twitter. I tapped her shoulder and she confirmed that it was her. From now on wherever there was James there was Rosie The stories that woman can tell... She's been meeting James for years. Once the line did move it turned out I had to buy the ticket on Sunday.

Q&A Chris:

Less people than I had expected were there, and Chris successfully taught those who wanted to ask a question not to jump right in but to greet him first. Worked fine after the third question He was funny and cool and I realized once more what a great voice the man has. I managed to get my question in: since he has repeatedly written SG-1 episodes I asked him if there was any story line that he would have liked to do that didn't happen. He said that they had assumed there would be a season 11, but since there obviously wasn't he would have liked to see a conclusion to the Dakara arc as well as to T's personal story - would he have stayed on earth or gone back to his family? He also talked about the episode "Birthright". Apparently the producers wanted an Amazon story but what the writers delivered was "a 12 year old's soft don't read, mods please delete" so they asked Chris to do a rewrite. "And now it's still soft don't read, mods please delete but more mature." :-D

Chris talked about God of War, his current project, and about how kel'noreem was invented: in the beginning T had a lot of dialogue until Chris pointed out that was a little strange, with him being an alien and why would he comment so much on what's going on on earth – "Why would he care?!" After that the writers went to the opposite extreme and gave him NOTHING. So he was bored most of the time and dozed off. When he was caught he said he hadn’t been asleep – he'd been meditating. And thus kel'noreem appeared in the scripts...like I said Chris was funny and cool and the panel was great – but I was horrible nervous.

After the panel I got my stuff organized...OK basically I was stalling. My personal coach Karen kicked my butt via Skype chat, and so I manned up and went over. Only to find his table empty. So my nice little First Contact plan was screwed: stroll by, catch a glimpse, get used to the idea that he's a real boy, then get in line, go over my lines for the umpteenth time and THEN make contact. Bugger. The crew member said he was supposed to be back in ten. Retreat. Quick check in with Karen – go back later or wait for him there? Karen voted for waiting for him – but by the time I made it there he was already back and a small line had formed. OK so no strolling by but at least the getting prepared while waiting in line thing would work. Deep calming breaths. That's what everybody had been telling me. (Honestly I'm remembering that NOW. Didn't back then.) But hey Shane, just so that you know – I refrained from fainting!

MJM part 1

I was so nervous that my hands were shaking. Visibly. I could hardly handle the money – let alone write down Karen's name and the personalization I wanted. And then it was my turn. James looked up, smiled at me, shook my hand and we exchanged the appropriate pleasantries. He started to write "To Karen" and I explained that the autograph was for a friend.

James: "You are so cool – standing in line for someone else!"

Yes, pretty much the first thing the man ever said to me was that I was cool. Ha. Take that, high school!

I explained what was up with the personalization ("It's all your fault.") - how it was Karen's fault that I was there, talking to him, even knowing about him.

James: "Well tell her thank you for spreading the disease!"

Me: "I will!"

Which I hereby did, Karen. Ya hear me?

Next I handed him my presents (CD by Star One and a MudLOVE armband that said "Never give up."), telling him they were belated birthday presents (his birthday had been a week before). He opened the package and asked about the music, so I explained that while maybe being a little heavy for his taste it had a great sci fi concept – each song is about a different classic sci fi movie (Me: "I had to look some of them up but you probably know them all.") - and very good guitar playing. The armband got a raised eyebrow and: “Oh! Nice!” so I showed him mine and asked if he knew about them, and he said "Yeah, from New Life." That's his last movie, about to be released in the US in the fall, and precisely how I learned about them. I explained that I had heard him quote Winston Churchill and therefore thought it was fitting.

James: "Actually the full quote is 'Never, never, never give up.' My dad used to tell me that."

Me: "I brought a little something for Mark, too (Mark Devine, his travel buddy and partner in crime for his latest project, ViDiOTS), because I was hoping he'd be here with you."

"He's back at the hotel trying to edit the footage we shot yesterday [for ViDiOTS]. We blew his hard drive because we shot so much so he got an external hard drive and he's trying to fix that."

"So could you take it with you – for him?"

"Sure!"

I put the little package of dried pineapple on the table, explaining how I'd read that those were one of the two fruits Mark could have. James said he'd give them to Mark, then hesitated, put them away and grinned: "No actually I'm gonna steal them. I want them myself." Which I protested. Loud and clear.

The first thing I asked James to sign for myself was my kick starter DVD of "Dragon Warriors" aka "Dudes and Dragons". His comment was:

"That's so cool. I love how much they got with so little [money]."

We talked about one of my favorite scenes, the fight Lord Tensley vs. Ramicus which always makes me laugh before it even comes up and how I made a few people watch that movie. James said the director had been great [Maclain Nelson who's also on board for James' long to come Macbeth project]. So I asked how that was coming along.

James: "I'm working with the same people [as in DW] -"

Me: "Yeah, I know."

"So you know about this?"

"Yeah."

"We did a rewrite recently. We had a table read and now they are doing the changes that we talked about."

I asked him if he was going to star in it (or produce/direct) and he said: “Yeah I reckon I will!”

I can't WAIT to see that.

Next item to be signed was his comic "Spike:Into the Light". I asked him not to sign on the front but on a page next to a line I particularly love: 'Losing a fight in front of a bird on a first date? That's low!'

Me: "Because that's so Spike."

James: "Yeah! I had this idea after reading one of the Buffy comics where he has a spaceship – that's just wrong. Spike needs to be an underdog. There's one thing that bothers me though" – flipping through the book to show me the page he meant – "the monster was supposed to unfurl to a whole page, it should have been really huge. But apart from that..."

And then came my least stellar moment. When I told him I had written my own take on it after hearing him talk about the plot he said:

"Oh, so what did you write?"

BLACKOUT. Couldn't remember a single thing about my own story. Way to go Anke.

After that we shook hands again, I told him I'd see him later and was on my merry way. Leaving behind Karen's autograph! Luckily both James and the crew member realized it at once.

Phew. That went WAY better than expected. After the initial nervousness I was almost completely calm, my higher brain functions were within normal parameters and I even managed to look him in the eye the whole time. Which is quite a sight by the way.

I strolled by his table again a little later, hindered by the massive traffic jam in front of Sean Astin's table. When I took a few pics of James I was told – politely – not to take free pictures. Hm. There were no signs up! They did appear later though.

MJM part 2

Next stop stage: James' panel. He was 15 minutes late probably because he always talks to everybody at great length, but we did get our full 45 minutes. James started the game with his usual challenge to try and embarrass him, and he filmed us giving a round of applause for the cosplayers he would post on facebook. I didn't get a question in. Many of the questions that were asked were the well known standards, but some of the more interesting ones were

  • Who would he pay money to meet and listen to – he's met all his heroes. But after thinking really hard he did tell the Leonard Nimoy story.

  • What are his three favorite places – he's always working and has given up sight seeing and partying when he's at cons or filming, but he picked Barcelona, Seattle – and Amsterdam. :-D

  • Which voice in the Dresden Files was the hardest – none of them was hard, but he had to do a Japanese character for Vampire Empires and what he tried was Chinese and he had NOTHING...the only Japanese character he could come up with was a funny one and the guy he was supposed to read was the lead's mentor who turns evil and James said he couldn't believe he got away with it

  • some discussion about "Dragonball" which was "Let's face it, a horrible movie"

  • Did he ever turn a role down – anything including sexual violence

MJM part 3

...was the John Hart photo shoot. There was some confusion as to where it was supposed to take place, so Rosie and me and a few other fans played a new game we'd just invented called "Follow The Jacket". Because while the man himself wasn't there yet, a crew member had showed up with the famous red jacket and told her colleague to "guard it with her life" and we brilliantly concluded that staying close to the jacket would most likely get us to the right spot. So we and The Jacket ran around a little until we finally settled on Photo Booth A where we had expected the shoot to take place anyway. James arrived, put on The Jacket and then everything was very, VERY rushed. There was barely time for a hand shake and a hello, let alone discussing poses. The girl before me had shown him the pose she wanted on her phone and he said he couldn't, so I knew better than to ask for what I had in mind. It became the standard stand side by side put an arm around each other thing, but it turned out OK. James settled on the pout instead of a smile which is fine for John Hart. There was time for 'thank you' and 'it's a pleasure' though :-)

This was one of the few things I wasn't completely happy with – Showmasters should have scheduled more time for the shoots, this one in particular.

I had talked to a Dutch guy and two German girls while standing in line. It's so easy to get in contact with people at a place like that :-)

With all the nerve wrecking things done for the day I finally looked around a little. The no photos signs had been put up in the meantime and Chris Judge had changed from his batman into a Showmasters t-shirt. I sneaked a last glance at James who was still signing, smiling, talking to fans and left with that warm fuzzy feeling they call happiness. On my way out I decided to make another try at the sales desk since nobody was waiting in line and the day was pretty much through. This time it worked and I got my Chris Judge photo ticket and made the desk lady happy with a lot of fivers.

Conclusion of day 1:

Talking to James felt familiar somehow, as if I'd known him for a while. He was kind and warm and approachable, and he made me feel like he had all the time in the world to talk to me and only me. He seemed happy to be able to talk about a few things he probably doesn't get asked all the time.

Day 2

Getting into the convention center was no problem, there wasn't even a queue when I got there about half an hour after the doors had opened. I took some time to browse the merch since my first date was at 11:00. Bought two stickers (Torchwood and Stargate) from a German girl who was sure she'd seen me at cons before, and two t-shirts.

MJM part 4

At 11:00 it was time for my regular James photo shoot. In line I met Rosie again plus Nicky in amazing vampire make-up, and behind me was a Dutch girl that I also talked to for a while. James came around the corner, waved and smiled at us, the guy in charge announced: "James is in the house", and there we went. The ladies were right in front of me; this shoot wasn't as rushed as the one on Saturday. James and Nicky did a great "vamp attack" pose. Rosie had two tickets, so their first shot was a standard smile, and then they looked at each other with James asking: "So what do we do now?" He shrugged, and that became their pose: an exaggerated shrug with clueless faces that turned out great. When it was my turn James and I shook hands and I asked him if we could do the iconic Spike/Dru pose from "School Hard" but he said he couldn't "with his wife watching", so I asked for a smile instead.

"Sure!"

We turned, we smiled, the camera flashed and it was over. Inside joke. Oh no it wasn't over yet: I thanked him and while I was already walking away he said: "Smiling is allowed!" Hehe.

[pic follows below]

The girls from our little group hung around for a while afterward, showing each other our photos and talking about the upcoming "Buffy Q&A" that had turned into a James solo panel due to Julie Benz canceling. The girl from the Netherlands asked us if we thought James might sing for us, and Rosie said she should just ask. Rosie and I looked at each other and said with one voice: "Cowboy Song!" We know our guy :-D

I stayed behind because shortly after James' shoot was Chris Judge's. In front of me was a couple with a very young baby, and the little boy was far more interested in that huge black man than looking at the camera – no matter how hard the photographer tried to get his attention. I met them later and saw the pic – it turned out too sweet with the baby boy looking up at Chris' face from his mother's arms. When it was my turn we shook hands, said hello (what a voice!), smiled, put our arms around each others backs (the man is all muscle. Very nice...), thanked each other, done. Not really happy with the pic (so I decided not to have it signed) because I don't like the way I look and Chris' smile looks forced which is sad because he did smile widely and genuinely at me when we greeted each other. But hey – smiling all day must be really exhausting. No wonder James avoids it if he can...

MJM part 5

Shortly after the shoot I went over to the stage to queue up for James' panel, meeting the usual suspects there. Rosie and I considered trying to get into the front row but we found out that the whole row was for gold pass holders – “technically”. Whatever that may mean. Anyway we got a good, center third row seat instead. While we were waiting Rosie told me all sorts of stories she had experienced with James and ghost of the robot over the years – including the band (minus James) staying at her house for three days when they were touring Europe two years ago. She had asked James beforehand if he wanted her to ask a question and he had said to ask about ViDiOTS because he wanted to promote that. So when he had thrown down the usual gauntlet and added "Who's the bravest person in the house?", Rosie's hand went up immediately, rewarded by "Hey love." He talked about the project and said it would launch in a month on amazon.

When Rosie was done she looked around for the crew member who handled the microphone but I gestured to her to give it to me instead. Drum roll. God had I been practicing this...I didn't really think I would manage to embarrass him because frankly I don't think I've ever seen that happen, but I know that he likes naughty questions. Plus I really wanted to know! So here goes:

Me: "I love the relationship between Spike and Dru, and I assume it's a pretty kinky one..."

Him: big grin and affirmative nod

Me: "So - how much of a kinky person are you, in real life?"

Him, eyes wide, mouth open, followed by a huge grin: "You would have to ask the don't read, mods please delete star I dated..."

Me (can you believe I actually thought of that?): "She won't talk to me."

Him, still laughing: "OK - I'm willing..."

[that alone would have been a nice answer thank you very much :-D]

"... to go kinky, but I wouldn't wanna *live* there... You know... Like, it's the spice, but if that's the whole relationship, that's probably not a good thing."

Me: "I agree."

Him: "Nice try!"

Me: thud. Thinking: "And now I have to follow that up at his table..." No actually I wasn't thinking THAT until much later.

The girl from the photo shoot asked him for a song and he did the cowboy song. I sat with my eyes closed, at least in the beginning, losing myself in his voice. Oh he probably explained at first how the song came to be but I don't remember that part. Obviously my mind has a mind of its own...and that's when I realized I had forgotten to ask the second half of my question.

A guy – yes there were men in the audience ;-) - asked about working out and James said he does, but he doesn't like to bulk up too much because he never knows what the next audition will be for, so it's basically about showing the casting people and the director that you can go there if needed. Fine with me :-)

Panel done Coach Karen bullied me into asking the rest of the question at his table. Can you believe there was no line there? No time to compose myself, no time to make up or change my mind, just go for it girl. Which was probably a good thing since the following conversation MADE MY YEAR:

MJM part 6 (last part)

Me: "Hi James, it's me again."

He looked up, smug smile: "Hey baby..."

We shook hands and he checked the photo op pic I had put down on his table: "Oh, cool!" [Yeah, I like it, too :-)]

Me: "I'm sorry I failed..."

He looked up again, eyebrows raised.

"...at trying to embarrass you."

Grin: "That's OK. It was a nice try though..."

He started writing my name.

Me: "I forgot the second half of that question."

"And what was that?"

Breathe. "Dominant – or submissive?"

Him, very resolutely: "Oh, dominant!"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah..."

[Well that works out nicely then...:-D]

He looked up: "I tried the other one, but it doesn't work for me. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just...not my thing I guess."

Questions, anyone? :-D

I let him get back to signing and then remembered Jean had said to say hello. I know her from Twitter and she'd calmed me down Friday night when I had been freaking out and couldn't fall asleep. She's met James a lot of times and knows him quite well.

Me: "Jean says to say hello by the way."

"So where is lazy Jean?"

"I'm not sure, I guess - "

"Oh she's gone back to school, right?" [she's a teacher.] "She's such a sweetheart. I was kidding when I called her lazy."

Next topic:

Me: "So did you give Mark his pineapples?"

"Yes I did!"

"Good, because I didn't hear from him!"

James: "If you see him around -"

"Oh, so he's here?"

"Yeah, if you see him tell him I need my phone back!"

Whatever that was about :-D

And, last topic:

"It's a shame you didn't play a concert here."

"Yeah..."

"So why didn't you?"

"They didn't ask!"

"I asked!"

[Ya hear me, Showmasters? I did ask! How about we try that next year?]

"Yeah, well I can't take my guitar unless I have a reason, because - "

"They keep breaking it."

"Exactly." [Poor thing has been broken at least once by the air line.] "But we (!) still have next year."

[it's a date, honey!]

Me: "OK, thank you so much."

We shook hands once more, and he told me:

"It's been really cool talking to you. Take care."

Can life get any better? It can! A second after stepping away from the table I ran into Rosie, camera in hand and a huge grin on her face. She'd seen me at his table and taken half a dozen photos while we'd been talking! OMG. I wrote down my email address and by the time I made it home she'd already sent me the pics. LOVE!

Chris Judge's Sunday panel was even more fun than his first one. He started by joking that we might turn the whole thing around and he would ask all of us a lot of questions...interesting concept :-D

Someone got him to say "Indeed" without having to pay extra for it, a very interesting discussion came up concerning Stargate Universe (which Chris decided he didn't like after barely making in through one and a half episodes), he said that he used to love Scotch and used to drink a lot of it, and he talked about the pranks he played on set:

When a few people left before he was finished he yelled:

"Hey, where are you going? Food? You can eat whenever you want, I'm only here today!"

On a more serious note he said that his fellow Americans are too ignorant in his opinion, rarely travel and tend to think that the US is the center of the world – whereas he's grateful that he gets the opportunity to see other countries and cultural differences. His conclusion though was that underneath we're all a lot more similar than we think.

It was a very inspiring and motivating speech, and when I left I was so impressed with him that I spontaneously decided to get his autograph. Not on our photo but on a Teal'c pic.

So I went to his table and waited for him, we shook hands, he asked for my name, spelled it right, personalized and signed the pic, thanked me, wished me a nice day and shook my hand again.

Phew again. I cooled down by buying a few more shirts – one for my husband – and left the building a tired, but VERY happy puppy, feeling the first inkling of post con blues. As in 'Sad that' it's over now'. What a weekend.

James, Chris, the con people, the good people of Amsterdam, the hotel staff, my mom, Karen and Jean all made this an awesome experience. I love my life.
